Richmond shook like crazy yesterday during the 5.9 magnitude earthquake and what's the first thing I did after it was all over? Make an earthquake themed mixtape, naturally. The mixtape features tracks from local bands Marionette, Against Grace, Jonathan Vassar and the Speckled Bird, Dave Watkins, Louisiana Territory, Gills & Wings, Ferdinand Thomas, Prabir and the Substitutes, The Animal Beat and Nick Coward and the Last Battle. Pop rockers Against Grace have their first show in Richmond since 2010 this Friday, April 8 at the Canal Club. Joining them will be The Onset , Colourslide (from Raleigh), The Silver Liners (from DC) and Doethepaperboy . The boys in Against Grace have been very busy lately. Not only have they released a new EP earlier this year and toured extensively in support of it, they've got another release ready to go. The band plans on releasing a CD single for "Monday," their collaboration with Doethepaperboy with a release show at the National on Wednesday, Nov. 24. I'll admit that hip-hop is not a type of music that frequently listen to, but I love it when an artist makes a genre so easily acceptable that anyone can listen to it. I first heard about hip-hop artist Doethepaperboy when he collaborated with Against Grace for the song " Monday ," which they will be releasing near the end of the year. The night started off at Gallery 5 for the Silent Music Revival. The eloquent and hypnotic music of Dave Watkins performing alongside the 1926 silent film "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" was something that needed to be seen (and heard) to fully appreciate. The animation people were able to create back then is very astounding and Watkins' music matched up perfectly as he played for a straight hour and seven minutes.
