The punk quartet of Against Me! just released the video, for their latest single " Stop ," just in time for the US elections, as they remind us to "stop, take some time to think, figure out what's important." Solid advice guys, that's something we should all do more often. As for the video, it features the Florida new wavers chilling on the couch, as their alter egos play on TV; the black and white effects do well to reminisce Nirvana's In Bloom , minus the screaming girls and geekish cloths. Stop [...]
After a tremendously successful 2007, Against Me! have kicked off the new year with the release of New Wave's third single "Stop" and an accompanying music video. [Via Myspace] In related news, frontman Tom Gabel seems to be looking forward to 2008 more than anyone. The band is currently on a full U.S. tour with Foo [...]

If you've been paying attention, you've probably heard me bitch once or twice about the lack of rock music coming from South Florida. Well, it ain't gonna end here. But rock gets a little bit closer with Against Me!, who come from Gainesville. In case you don't know, Gainesville is way up the road from Miami, which is probably why there's rock music there. I first heard of Against Me! probably a year ago, but they've actually been around in different variations for about 10 years. From the Against Me! Web site : "A [...]

Here it is a week into the new year and I'm just getting around to posting my favorites of 2007 (Good thing that procrastination wasn't part of my New Years resolutions). But alas, sometimes, life gets in the way of everything. Anyway, for anyone who cares, here is my Top 25 20 15 14 Albums of 2007! 14. José González - In Our Nature The latest from the Swedish singer/songwriter was another collection of stark beautiful emotions [...]
So did everyone have just a wonderful holiday? This year my friends and family finally wised up and didn't buy me any vinyl, since whenever they do I already own it and then I'm a dickhead for saying so. My prized gift is the new three-disc edition of Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, which includes all three versions of the classic sci-fi film. I'm the same way with alternate film cuts as I am with remixes and extended versions of songs, I got to watch them all and note all the differences. I'm sick like that. This'll [...]
What gives people? 8500 page views in the last 3 days and 2 comments on my best of 2007 list? I thought we were friends. I thought we were getting to know one another. OK. I see how you are. ;) Anyhow, here is the top ten. My favorite records of the year. Some that grew into favorites and a few that instantly blew me away. Even a few that (even after less than a year) have sentimental value. I'm not sure if you care, but you can check out [...]

Thurston Moore Is there anything more American than a list? I think they are rooted in the same part of the American psyche as presidential polls, American Idol and call-in radio shows. So in a effort to fall into line with my fellow Americans, here is the first installment of my best songs of 2007. Enjoy. 30. Erin McKeown " Rhode Island Is Famous For You " The Virginia native's retro style is featured on this cover of [...]

I've never been a big fan of lists (hold it...I just had some deja vu), but this year due to the fact that I have started to contribute to the OC Weekly's (a Village Voice publication) Heard Mentality blog, I was offered a opportunity to vote in the 2007 Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll (I'm not special, something like 1500 people are asked to vote in it), I decided "hey why not" and submitted my 10 favorite albums of the year. Picking 10 was pretty hard. I used the deciding factor of whether I had [...]
The Top 50 Songs of 2007 list continues. Today we chart #30-21. More excitement along with the end of this list is on the way in the next two days. As a reminder, songs with mp3s are indicated in green. We're on a roll now. You know the drill: 30. St. Vincent- Paris Is Burning From all the people I've talked to, each one seems to have their own opinion as to which is the best song off of St. Vincent's album "Marry Me." The thing is, no [...]

Master M.C. Sage Francis is on the road spreading the word - his word. If you're not familiar with Francis, think Kid Rock meets Eminem , except with a lot more skills, more intelligence, and a sharp sense of humor. He's promoting his latest album Human the Death Dance , which has gotten all sorts of praise, by hitting the road with Against Me! through the end of the month. Catch him if you can. As part of the current tour, Francis will participate in a special benefit [...]

For anyone vaguely aware of music in the Jaksonville, Florida area, Talleyrand should already be tattooed onto your calenders. For anyone oblivious to such events, consider this your warning. This festival is the largest, most exciting thing that has happened to Jacksonville's music scene in as long as I can remember, and will only add to its reputation. This doozie of a show will take place at Metropolitan Park, will feature dozens of bands, and have the work of over 100 painters, sculptors and multi-media artists on-site. Awesome! The line-up shall include: [...]

Posted by Andrew: Man I love women's golf. Whoever coined the phrase "Dykes on Spikes" should be ashamed of themselves. The assumption that LPGA players are all lesbians is just ludicrous. Just look at that photo there. Does she look like a lesbian? I don't think so. I just wanted to say thank you to Natalie Gulbis for stretching out like that before she tees off on the first hole. We would hate for her to pull a muscle. And Natalie, don't listen to what all those male chauvanistic [...]

After months of speculation it has happened: The Ultramod Compound was demolished. Apparently it happened sometime over the past weekend. I got a call from my former roommate Tony Evans ( Garbage Island ) Tuesday afternoon telling me about it. I ran shows there from 1996-2003 and then the other guys in the house continued the theme but with more local bands and fewer touring bands. Previous to my living there the guys in Ceiling Fan (R.I.P) had started the phenomenon by throwing [...]

Schon wieder ein ganzes Album als Geschenk! Ben Lee fand das neue Against Me! Doch lassen wir ihn selber erklären: "A couple of weeks ago I downloaded the new "Against Me!" album "New Wave". I didnt really know too much about this band but had been reading lots of good things about it, and my friend Tegan sings [...]

------------------------------ --- I first posted this back in May. Since then there has not been a single week pass where someone has not emailed me looking for the songs again. So, I decided to make a repost and include a little more information: The Old Crow Medicine Show version of this song is available on their Troubles Up and Down the Road EP (currently Out of Print). The Jason Webley/Rev. Peyton version is available on bonus disc of their Two Bottles of Win e [...]
