As another crazy work week comes to a close, let's all take a deep breath and dive deep into the soul-restoring waters of Alright, You Restless (and maybe a drink or two, if that's your thing). Alright, You Restless is the enthusiastic debut album by Portland's AgesandAges , and gosh darn if it doesn't just make people feel happy and… what is that? Hope? A good thing, since that was pretty much the point. AgesandAges was born from frontman Tim Perry's desire to beat down northwest apathy. I [...]

Spring has its own special brand of fidgetiness. I start to feel slowly like there are little invisible crawly things on my skin, in a picnic sort of way, and I get all these ideas about exploring and adventures. Combine that with the calescent glow of things warming up all around us, and I spend a noticeably increased amount of time staring out the window lost in daydreams. As with any other season for the last few years, I've stitched up a soundtrack of twenty songs that are compelling me in these days, wafting out my opened windows [...]

Remember when we said we'd share our list of 25 other unmissable records the first week of January? Whoops. Thing is, the first month of this new year, we were still listening to and falling in (and out) of love with records from 2011. Discovering albums we should've shared months ago and finding out what [...]
This year in music has been quite impressive. While 2010 gave us clear-cut, stand alone winners, it was much harder to determine which album was Top Ten worthy, let alone the best of 2011. Most sites have published their lists already, and while many albums appear on the same lists, the top ten varies greatly from list to list. Don't expect us to be any different. You know the drill. Here are my favourite songs from the past year...#11-20. 20. San Cisco - Golden Revolver Another band that came to me in an email. As soon as I say they were from Australia I was instantly hovering over the trash button but I must have been in a good mood because instead of clicking on the garbage can, I clicked on their bandcamp link. What I found was this beauty. Golden Revolver has been [...]

Thursday, December 8, 2011 Part two of my album list awaits you just below. Check it out, and then be sure to return tomorrow for my final 10 selections. Enjoy. - 20 Through 11 - #20) Cults - Self Titled As I've said a few times before, Cults have this weird, generic approach to stuff that I think is a turn-off to most people. [...]

50) : The Strokes - Under Cover Of Darkness : The latest Strokes full length wasn't exactly their best work, but I found it hard to escape this song. The guitar riff is just too good, and I love how catchy every single moment of it is. This is from the Angles LP. 49) : Charles Bradley - The World (Is Going Up In Flames) : Anything that comes from the Daptone roster is bound to impress me in some way or another, so it makes sense that this beast of [...]

Bumbershoot 2011 Day Two (September 4th, 2011 - Seattle, Washington) **Atari Teenage Riot Maybe it was a mistake to kick-off the second, glorious, sunny day of Bumbershoot (a fun, colloquial way of saying umbrella), Seattle's annual international music and arts festival, by arriving at 6pm after seven hours on an airplane, and walking straight into the dark pit of the Exhibition Hall music stage. Watching Anti-Flag rage incoherently about social injustice to a group of half-interested, disaffected, fans who couldn't be convinced to mosh or crowd surf despite the [...]

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. Any Joe Blow music blogger can throw together a playlist of decent songs (believe me, I have tried one too many times). Rarely am I high-fiving strangers or chest-bumping my ladyfriend when a new one pops up on the interweb...unless of course if it comes from a select few of my favourite music junkies. We have already seen a couple from I am Friends, You are Fuel and Music For Ants recently...stepping into the spotlight today is the newest release from Canadian superbloggers, Ca Va Cool . So good! Get it [...]

Sometimes, there's too much good music. Mixtapes are a chance to pick and choose from the spectrum of too muchness and bring friends and readers some of the best of what I've heard recently. But sometimes there's still too much, which is why I decided to split this mix into 2 parts, or 'sides', if you will. Part 1 is California Sunrise, because as you'll learn quickly in the captions below, California has inadvertently become a major theme in my listening choices as of late. Like past mixes, this one's heavily influenced by how I feel with the on-set of my favourite time [...]

This morning, my car sits packed to its dear 2001 Sentra gills. I am heading off into the southwestern climes of the United States, across six states with my seven year-old, a stack of good music and audiobooks, and a hankering for the open road. We'll hit Mesa Verde, see family in Phoenix, sun in San Diego, attend a Dodgers-Padres game (so I can teach him to properly boo LA), camp along the north rim of the Grand Canyon, and stay in various KOA cabins along the way. We plan on s'mores and stargazing, and maybe finding a swimming hole [...]
