For Puff Daddy and company, it's all about the benjamins. For MUF, it's all about getting that REM sleep with some good indie sleep music . For our followers, you already dug into Sleep Music Vol. 1 , which featured some ridiculously sleepy songs with the likes of Bon Iver and Tycho (both on our top 100 songs of 2011 ). Remember, we're not going mainstream on you, so you probably haven't heard any of these songs. The truth about these sleep lists is I made them for my wife, who [...]

Elliott Smith wrote some of the prettiest pop songs ever written. Of course, writing a pretty pop song isn't the same thing as writing an upbeat pop song. "Between the Bars" is a perfect example. The melody is touchingly beautiful and unthreateningly gentle. The lyrics, however, are undeniably troubled. Although the song could double as an unorthodox love song (a popular interpretation of the track), the most likely read is that it's about the threat of impending alcoholism. As the track opens, Smith sings ruefully about "the potential you'll be, but you'll never see / the promises you'll only make." [...]

Released in October 2010, Philharmonics by Danish born, Berlin-based, classically trained pianist Agnes Obel, has been one of the word-of-mouth success stories of the past year. Akin to Anna Calvi's recent Vicar Street performance, tonight's show has something of a triumphal end-of-year return about it, both for those in the audience who saw Obel in The Sugar Club in April (Obel also visited Ireland during the summer, for a by-all-accounts spine-tingling set at St. Canice's Cathedral during the Kilkenny Arts Festival) and for the first-timers the larger venue can accommodate. She is joined by [...]

Ik hoor je denken... Wonderful Life...

Dienstag, 15. After a gig in The Sugar Club in April, a performance at St, Canice's Cathedral in Killkenny and a support slot with Fleet Foxes in Cork, Danish songwriter Agnes Obel will play Vicar Street on Saturday December 10th. Tickets on sale Friday October 7th priced €20 plus fees There is also shows in Letterkenny, Donegal, the Roisin Dubh in Galway and the Triskel Christchurch in Cork.

I go to a lot of gigs and, while the vast majority of them are great, there are a few that definitely leave a mark. And, on very rare occasions, there comes along a gig that is so very special, that it completely stuns you and leaves you in awe of the performer before you. Thursday night, I experienced one of those rare moments. The Kilkenny Arts Festival this year has been incredible. From the Irish and international visual art to the classical music; the theatre [...]

The brilliant Agnes Obel will take to the stage in the beautiful surroundings of St. Candice's Cathedral on Thursday 11th August as part of this year's Kilkenny Arts Festival . The Dutch composer and songwriter will put on a stunning performance of songs from her highly acclaimed platinum debut album, Philharmonics , as well as a small handful of new songs from her sophomore record, which she is currently working on. Support on the night will be from the wonderfully talented Irish guitarist Cian Nugent , who [...]

Photograph by Frank Eidel Earlier today I was lucky enough to speak with the wonderful Agnes Obel, who will play St Candice's Cathedral in Kilkenny this coming August as part of the city's annual Arts Festival . Bound to be one of this summer's most captivating concerts, Agnes' live performance is one that I have been excited about for months. Having just had a big sugar and coffee binge, which she told me left her feeling "very fresh", the Danish composer and singer-songwriter [...]

chamber folk // singer-songwriter Danish-born and Berlin-based songstress Agnes Obel possesses a natural sense of tone and melody as well as a truly faultless voice. The beautifully crafted somber folk melodies of her debut album Philharmonics (2010) linger in the air and stir the heart. While Agnes vocal delivery brings to mind the long-time Aurgasm favourite Ane Brun , the album ranges from romantic quirkiness of Joanna Newsom to echoes of Debussy. European readers might recognize the bright melody of "Just So", as the song was used by German telecommunications company [...]

As June ends and July will surely bring on a slew of more remixes, so in-turn we have to pull out the mop to clean up all of the remixes we've come across over the last month worth listening to. This last month several songs hit hard, particularly Uphill Racer's Remix of Phoenix's "Lasso". Phoenix's album 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" came out in 2009, but this remix might be perhaps my favorite remix of the lot. Of course Keane was thrown into the mix for a [...]
