Being sick is terrible. I've been fighting something nasty since Tuesday. Luckily the worst was out of the way fast - after recording a 101 degree temperature Tuesday night, the fever subsided and I've slowly returned to a state that's manageable. I was still a bit stuffed up on the 25th, but by 10pm all that was left was sniffling and the occasional cough - my regular voice was back. On November 25, I decided to do something a little different. Not only would I tell a few stories about [...]

The Ocean Floor , out of Portland OR, is Lane Barrington and an ever-revolving set of unique musicians. Centered mostly around orchestral arrangements, The Ocean Floor's music is heartfelt and diverse, and on their forthcoming fourth full length, Pop Quiz , they use a variety of different 20th century, historic elements to influence the lyrics and the sound. Pop Quiz is due out July 13 via Electricity/Lust . For as conceptual as the album may be, The Ocean Floor doesn't pretend to know all the answers, or any of them, for that matter. There are [...]

Do you have plans on Thursday night? I know, I know, there's this little team called the Trail Blazers. But for anyone who's not a basketball fan (or for people who really care about music and arts in this city) there's another event in town that's worth throwing your money behind. For the second year in a row, the good folks behind PDX Pop Now! are holding a benefit concert at the tiny Ace Cleaners for everyone's favorite all ages, all local, totally free music festival, and it's the best folk-pop show of the spring. The highlight is [...]

2009 is a tough year to judge. I've checked out more albums this year than any year in the past. Well over 1,000. And there have been quite a few great ones as well. When this list began, it had 110 albums. I abandoned my top 33 and 1/3 for 45, and then said "screw it" and upped the number to an even 50. These are the top notch albums of the year, all worthy of praise. Despite trouble all around, 2009 wasn't all that bad. [...]

Upon Waking at the far edge of the earth, night is going away. another poem begins. slumped over the typewriter i must get this exactly, i want to make it clear this morning that your face, as it opens from its shadow, is more perfect than yesterday; and that the light, as it hesitates over the approach of your smile, has given this aching bed more than warmth, more than poems; someway a generous [...]

A sleepy little album that will be pleasing to some, tedious to others. Regardless of one’s fondness for strings and softly spoken lyrics, though, the latest release from Portland’s Ah Holly Fam’ly deserves a listen. There are good things happening here, but it’s safe to say Reservoir isn’t for everyone. Reminds us of: Beirut | Ohioan | Horse Feathers Ah Holly Fam'ly: ( Website | Myspace ) ah holly fam'ly reservoir

This album released from few weeks back from Ah Holly Fam'ly feels almost fragile enough to shatter at first listen. Described as "Avant-Folk" or as far as "Theatrical" at times and I am not sure where to place it. It almost punches you in the face with not punching you in the face, ya know? It's a nice laid back affair. It takes a few listens for this mellow affair to really seep into your marrow and then it realize it's truly organic beauty. With acoustic guitar, orchestrals, strings and the duo of Becky Dawson and Jeremy Faulkner [...]
Following on from our first ever Q&A with Uncle Sinner a couple of weeks back, we're delighted to welcome Jeremy Faulkner from Ah Holly Fam'ly to the Mad Mackerel interrogation suite. For those that haven't discovered them yet, we first posted about this wonderful band back in May. Earlier this month they released their wonderful album Reservoir and it is sure to be featuring in our end-of-year

Not quite the stellar lineup of releases this week, but there are still some great records to be had with The Flaming Lips' latest, Embryonic leading the pack. Also not to be completely overshadowed are releases from Thao Nguyen , Neon Indian , Imaad Wasif , Grant-Lee Phillips , and Fanfarlo who's debut finally get a proper US release after being available digitally for what feels like forever. As always, feel free to recommend anything I may have missed. [...]

Ah Holly Fam’ly broke the silence of a hushed Berbati’s Pan Thursday night and inadvertently transported the crowd to a lonely farm in Idaho, all clad in streams and dry grass and food-rearing mammals. At least that’s where I went. Suddenly, I had wildflowers adorning my pig-tail braids, a straw hat, denim overalls, and I was wandering in the meadow with my pet goat. Back at Berbati’s, Ah Holly Fam’ly were drawing bows across violins, whispering into flutes, strumming acoustic guitars, and singing harmonies with the serenity and innocence of a children’s church [...]

You Should Know Originally from Idaho, Portland transplants Ah Holly Fam'ly create a rustic brand of folk laced with infectious melodies and organic instrumentation. While the Sufjan-ish pastoral folk arrangements on their new album Reservoir are surely lovely, the band's true strength is in its dueling girl/guy harmonies. It's surprising that a band that creates such lushly sparse music is actually an eight-piece, but if you listen closely you'll notice all those tiny details. The album is full of subtle layers and textures that enhance Ah [...]
The disc is a mellow affair, but the band is comprised of strong enough songwriters to easily keep the listener's attention.

It's already obvious to me that Reservoir by Ah Holly Fam'ly is a contender for a top 10 position of my Best of 2009 list. And, after several listens, "All Unfolding" has quickly taken the lead as my favorite track off the album. Much of its pinnacle placement is due to the dominating presence of Jeremy Faulkner's most unique style vocals. Here the band performs the song during a practice session in a Portland basement. The video also depicts some elements unique to Ah Holly Fam'ly, [...]

"All Unfolding" by Ah Holly Fam'ly "Stranger Maker" by Ah Holly Fam'ly Portland, Oregon's Ah Holly Fam'ly is an eight-piece folk troupe that plays swirling and rambling folk music with plenty of violin and flute. Their stellar debut record, Resevoir , is due out October 13th via Lucky Madison .

On the rare occasion that you are given the honor of watching a band grow from humble and minimal beginnings to something more, it is something that must not be taken lightly. So it is with caution I approach this review of Reservoir as, buried somewhere in the midst of seemingly hundreds of boxes of albums awaiting recategorization is a slim jewel case by a band called Ah Holly Fam'ly . Xeroxed on simple paper is a cover that possesses a simple title: Ah Holly Fam'ly Sings Oh Holy Family . [...]

Ah Holly Fam'ly - Young Veins Ah Holly Fam'ly are an eight-piece based in Portland with the kind of weather-worn folk songs that sound like they've been passed down through generations...only there's little wholesome about them. Male and female vocals swing back and forth over an acoustic ensemble, the storytelling conjuring up a mass migration through the smoke-filled hills of winter and a darkened past that can't be left behind. The band have sold out of their first run of the album, Your Body Will Become an Anchor , [...]
