The Builders and the Butchers - Wonder Ballroom (Portland, OR; June 18, 2009)

The Builders and the Butchers - Wonder Ballroom (Portland, OR; June 18, 2009) It's an inevitable truth that being a part of the audience at a show for The Builders and The Butchers means being as much a part of the performance as the band itself. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Ryan Sollee reminded everyone of this with a vengeance on Thursday night, as the Portland darlings held a CD release party at the Wonder Ballroom to kick off their first headlining summer tour. Midway through "Bottom of the Lake," Sollee decided the crowd was simply not doing their part, and so he knelt down, grabbed [...]

Mad Mackerel Recommends ...An Holly Fam'ly

We've only come across one tune so far from these folk, but it was enough for us to place an order for the album. The band is An Holly Fam'ly and the album is called Your Body Will Become An Anchor and you can get it via Paypal from their website here. It's described as angel voiced, kaleidoscope folk and judging from this one song, that seems pretty much on the button. They're from Portland.

Since 2004, Willamette Week has been conducting a "best knew" band poll of PDX's musical tastemakers. As an indication past winners have included Menomena, Talkdemonic, Copy, The Shaky Hands, and The Butchers and Builders. This year's winner was somewhat of a surprise, as most people figured that Blind Pilot would run away with the poll. After all the band went from little known "bicycle [...]

Portland Post-Folk-Electro-Ro ck-ish - Talkdemonic

I'm a sucker for anything that puts the focus on stringed instruments. Just like how I discovered Dirty Three years too late, I don't know how Talkdemonic slipped by me for as long as they did. The music the Portland duo creates is a brooding, deep-woods symphony, reflecting well the terrain of the Northwest. Without lyrics, the instruments do the job of emoting, with Lisa Molinaro's violin and cello playing working to convey the heart of the music. Kevin O'Connor handles the drums and electronics sequencing and the result is [...]
