I've written about Aidan Baker on here before but it was more so focusing on his collaboration/side project with Leah Buckareff called Nadja . So it's nice to finally get to say a few things about one of Baker's latest solo discs out now on The Kora Records entitled Scalpel . Baker has tried his hand in many different areas of music and it's always amazing to here the outcome, as more often than not the results are excellent. There have been records that dabble [...]

Safe As Buried Treasure (Nov. '07) Harmful or harmless, careful or careless. Snakes wrap themselves around withering branches on rotting trees. Coiled like lovers who never know coldness. It came again last evening, or the one before, I don't remember details anymore. So much passion and mumbled words between melding lips. She and I were soldered and unbreakable, but already broken and irreparable. No souls, no bodies, the lifeless husks of unloved beings shrunken and deformed, shells not yet noticed by maddened mortals. Even a quenchless thirst for reciprocated desire is not enough to demand attention. It [...]

After a miserable start to my day yesterday, I'm feeling good, to quote Nina Simone. I ran a bunch of errands, had a tasty burrito for dinner, and got a full night of sleep. I'm ready for whatever happens this weekend. Here's a new top ten list I formulated on the couch this morning. It's about as spiteful as I've sounded in a long time. THE TOP TEN WORST 'BOOMERS 10 - Richard Branson - The entrepreneur responsible for the Virgin brand, whose net worth is valued at roughly $7.8 [...]

A recent list compiled by researchers at Johns Hopkins lists the top ten worst human behaviors. Let's see how many I'm guilty of... 1. Discrimination in an employment situation: I am guilty of this, but in a kind-of unintentional way. Once I was working at the golf range when former New York Giants running back Otis "O.J." Anderson marched in and asked for -- actually he demanded -- two buckets of balls. When I told him that would cost twenty dollars, he said, "No, I don't think you heard me. I said I'd take two extra-large [...]

The heat wave continues. I spent all afternoon in the Glendale Barnes and Noble reading various texts to pass the time. The few times I stepped outside I could instantly feel the sun scorching my skin. My car's thermometer measured the air temperature at 108 degrees. I thought that was a little high, but the owner of the market around the corner from my apartment said the one in his store reached 105. I think it's supposed to continue like this for another day or two. I need to find something else to do tomorrow to occupy my mind. If [...]

I guess today is another one of those two-update days. Aren't you readers lucky? Both music related! I guess I'm finally living up to my billing as a music blogger? The thought of it might be sickening, sure, but the reality is that I try to spend as little time writing about music as a music nerd possibly can. I don't want to bore anyone. With that in mind, here's another music related entry. A mix tape! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be [...]
It's often been my mistake to think we all want to be overcome, to surrender in the same way.

Still from Vozvrashcheniye by Andrei Zvyagintsev, 2003 The sea seems to attract people in a most irresistible and overwhelming manner. There is nothing like gazing into the horizon and getting lost in the immensity of the sea. I grew up very close to the sea – The North Sea was a mere couple of minutes away from our home – and spent many days along the shoreline. I favoured the sea in the autumn, unlike most people who preferably went to the beach during the summer. This preference for the autumn sea fits well with my [...]
My heart is kind, and it is gentle--even to me.
Website re-launch. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. This week there is none. These songs will be removed if desired by the band or those who represent them. Let me know and I will gladly comply . The goal [...]
One thing I like about Russian dexes, sometimes you come across one with impeccable taste in ambient music. Like this one . There's a LOT of really, really good ambient stuff on this dex . The crown jewel for me is this fantastic track by Aidan Baker called " Post Lapse ." It starts out with drums and guitar, and then both slowly dissolve away to a pulsing ambient track... then finally the pulsing becomes a dull throb until even that fades away... fantastic track...
