Aimee Mann - One More Drifter In The Snow Aimee Mann is one of those artists who can seemingly do no wrong. Even when she's not great, she's still very good. I'm not sure I've ever heard a song of hers that I didn't like. In fact, "Wise Up" is probably one of my favorite songs of the past ten years. But until now, I've never owned a single one of her [...]

Today's post is in honor of the newest James Bond installment, Casino Royale . Daniel Craig is an awesome Bond, and Casino Royale is a badass flick. They've finally gone back to the espionage-style film as opposed to the "Let's see all the new gadgets," and Craig's Bond is equal parts frayed and flawed, which is a nice touch. One of the more fun aspects of the Bond series, however, is the music. Each Bond film's theme is performed by a current artist of their time, and the official themes have ranged [...]
I was going to hold off on this, because it's only November 10, for chrissakes. But in downtown Minneapolis, retailers have decided it's perpetually December 24th, and I can't help but admit I've gotten in the holiday mood. Plus, I haven't posted in a while. Guilt makes you do funny things. Aimee Mann released a Christmas record on Halloween (!), and you'd be forgiven for being skeptical. I think every Christmas CD should be granted a healthy level of skepticism, because I think we can all agree that most of them are terrible. But luckily, Aimee Mann has released a...

MP3: AIMEE MANN "I'll Be Home for Christmas" ( Toolshed ) If you thought Aimee Mann had serious cred as a singer/songwriter, you may change your mind if you're learning for the first time that she just came out with an album of traditional Christmas music. Granted her voice does kind of complement tree decorating quite well. tags: music | mp3 | christmas music | pop

I generally don't like Christmas music with vocals, although there's some instrumental stuff that I'm very fond of; the lyrics rely too heavily on goodwill to men (something I'm hard pressed to believe in), nostalgia and stock images. So I s'pose it's inevitable that I'm not crazy about Aimee Mann's One More Drifter in the Snow , but it's disappointing anyway. It's full of standards I don't particularly like, and the songs that I do like are weak: most notably You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch , which is soiled by some ham reading from the book, [...]

I'd like a real honest opinion from those who've been catching up with the Graboid (on time this week!) every week. Do you find it helpful? Has it helped with discovering new albums that you might've not known about otherwise? I'm just curious is all, and if you think it's useful than great! It's fun compiling it every week and I know that it opens my eyes to a lot of new music. Christmas comes early this week with a nice little collection of holiday tracks from Aimee Mann .

Today marks the birth of 3 very important people (to me). First, it's our sister's. She's the coolest 20-something mom I know. She and I didn't get along as kids, but now, we are best friends. I really couldn't have asked for better. Next, Neko Case turns 36. She's really become a huge part of my repertoire. Her music is the soundtrack to many a road trip. My boss says she could change the face of music. Her grandmother is Wanda Jackson, the first lady of rock-n-roll. [...]

This entry will be brief, so that my snobbery doesn't get out of control. When Zach Braff released his Garden State soundtrack, hipsters everywhere acted like it was the 1.5th coming of Christ, a true occasion. The soundtrack's alright, but come on now. A Grammy for a mix-tape? I remain highly dubious. And while I love "New Slang" by the Shins as much as the next girl, and while I've played that on my guitar and all that, here's the thing: The Shins will *not* save your life. And Zach Braff is not going to save indie music. [...]

My favorite field trips in elementary school were visits to the local zoo. I was always fascinated by how many different kinds of animals there were on this planet. So, for the next two days, we're going on a field trip to a zoo - an audio zoo. Beta Band - Dog Got a Bone Broadcast - Black Cat Money Mark - Insects are All Around Us Deerhoof - The Pickup Bear [...]

It's still Wednesday, but this photo was earmarked for the end of the week, so there ya go. Working a double shift straight through ought to keep my mind occuppied. Mercifully. That sick fucker Insomnia paid me a little visit last night, and what sleep I did manage was anything but restful. This was because, perhaps predicatably, I became very drunk after a few too many shots of Jameson. How a man can both nearly falling-down trashed (hence prone to passing out) and still be wideawake wired is an unfair mystery. [...]
Still recovering from a rather busy weekend, so it will be a short post today. Here is the latest installment of Video Is The Radio Star. Random Song 1 : Aimee Mann - 4th of July The Beastie Boys Whether you love them or hate them, The Beastie Boys have been a staple in rap music for over 20 years. They are the only hip-hop group to have their video catalogue [...]

Today is Independence day for the U.S.A. and it is a hot, steamy one down here in the Florida penisula. The Shuttle Discovery is due to launch (barring weather and foam insulation problems) and there will be fireworks tonight. The area I live in has an intra-coastal waterway (Banana River, Indian River) - in between the waterway and the ocean is where I live. The map shows it better than I can describe. Fireworks go off over the waterway and provide a very nice show for sure. I hope everyone has a good Fourth [...]

NASA gave the okay for today's launch of Discovery, despite a crack in the foam that insulates the external tank. If the launch goes as scheduled, today at 2:38 P.M. EST, it will be the first U.S. manned launch on the 4th of July. So, here's my 4th of July mix for this year, great for listening to as you watch the shuttle lift off. Some Girls - Launch Pad Elton John - Rocket Man David Bowie - Space Oddity [...]
World Cup stuff: We're looking at a very disappointing (for me, at least) set of semifinal matches in the World Cup. I like Italy in principle, but watching the Italian team play isn't much fun with them attacking the opposing team, delivering vicious elbows and tackles, and then flopping around anytime an opposing player is within 10 feet. Still, I have no interest in Germany winning, so I'll cheer for Italy. I was really hoping Argentina would win this side of the bracket, but no luck there. On the other side, [...]
