Over the last few years HT faves Wilco have launched their own music festival, started their own label, played innovative tours in their hometown of Chicago and even sold their own brand of coffee, but the one thing that they haven't done, at least since 1999, is make a music video. That changed yesterday as Jeff Tweedy & Co. released a new animated video for the tune Dawned On Me, but this isn't your straight up clip. For their first video in over a decade the band teamed up with the folks at King Features for [...]
Akron/Family might have just made the wrong enemy. The psych-folk band recently started selling a T-shirt on its website that shamelessly uses an extremely recognizable image: The skull logo of Man Is The Bastard, the '90s band that pioneered the hardcore punk subgenre known as power violence. And as Brooklyn Vegan points out , Man Is The Bastard frontman Eric Wood isn't happy about it. Wood has taken to leaving incendiary comments on Akron/Family's Facebook page and encouraging his fans to do the same. (Akron/Family: "We play Subkirke in South Bend, IN tonight!! See you [...]

[iphone photo by PP] Its hard to fully describe the complete manic communal energy at Saturday night's Akron/Family show at 285 Kent . On the night after the band received the great gift of being able to perform with the Sun Ra Arkestra (in Philly) , it seemed as if A/F wanted to reach that kind of high on their own - and to a great extent, they succeeded. The crowd was quite animated from the very outset of the show, a superb opening set from Bad Weather California . By the [...]

Dangerous Ponies will be opening a big night at The Blockley with the tranquil experimental folk sounds of Dead Oceans' Akron/Family and Colorado's Bad Weather California with their vintage doo-wop vibe that contains modern rock undertones. Dangerous Ponies will surely be supplying the good times as they journey through their repertoire of upbeat melodies, bouncy rhythms and infectious sing-along hooks. Glitter is probably mandatory (though you might just have to bring your own these days), and dancing is definitely a must. It's a hometown show for them so spread the love y'all! The Blockley, 3801 Chestnut St., 9pm, [...]

Akron/Family (Photo: Deborah Samantha) Exclusive Interview: Akron/Family January 14, 2012 by Chuck Norton For the last decade, Akron/Family has been making some of the most unique, experimental folk in North America. As anchors of the Brooklyn music re-birth in the mid-20002s, their impact on this generation of musicians can't be understated. The band has released a half-dozen albums in the last nine years, beginning with 20052s self-titled debut full-length. We reviewed the band's last album , Akron/Family II: The Cosmic Birth [...]

They say we're not getting any younger, but apparently the DC music scene might be. Akron/Family played for a crowd full of X-ed hands at the Rock and Roll hotel last Friday. Opening for them were Bad Weather California , whom I unfortunately missed but was reminded of, as their name was stenciled prominently on the front of the drum set Akron / Family used during their set. Known for their spirited improvisational shows, Akron / Family's Miles Seaton, in urban outfitters tribal printed pants snarked to the audience that they would [...]

Years ago, I had the foresight to catch Akron/Family live, as they were were Angels of Light's backing band on the tour. If I weren't such a huge Michael Gira fan, I might say they blew AoL out of the water. Four punk rock hillbillies presented thrashing tumultuous indie rock with banshee harmonies to an audience of enormous smiles. I have not seen them since, so I am completely delighted to have the opportunity to do so again, and I am even more excited that TVD has a pair of tickets to give [...]

ALBUMS OF 2011 #35 - #31 #35 Destroyer - Kaputt - Poor In Love ( MP3 ) A January release date rendered Destroyer 's Kaputt one of 2011's first great records. Its the ninth studio album from Vancouver's Dan Bejar, a re-imagining of 1980s synthpop and glamorous shoegaze, laden with female harmonies and brass sections, squealing dance synths and seamless intertwining transitions of close-mic vocals, watery background noise and modern synthesisers. #34 Gang Gang Dance - Eye Contact - Mindkilla ( MP3 ) [...]

This Music Wins Albums Of 2011 #1 // 40 - 31 continued from part #1 #40 Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost (True Panther Sounds) Arguably Girls ' most courageous attempt yet, here the San Francisco surf rock band venture in to the realm of classic rock, not stopping short of cheesy licks, walking bass-lines or even gospel choirs. The soulful backing singers and hammond organs characterise most of 'Vomit', a song which strikes at [...]

As 2011 quietly and quickly comes to a close it is a good time to reflect on the year just past. A year of exploration and discovery, fun and enjoyment. Pain and beauty. Joy and ragged edges. Trends and movements. Disappointment and surprise. Elation. Sometimes. Many albums were purchased, yes I still do that, and some exceeded expectations. Some didn't. One album though met and exceeded all expecations. The cover told a story. Through faces, homes, planes and mountains we peered into the depth of humanity. From within voices glistened and instruments sounded the memory lines [...]

We all love lists, and we all love sarcasm. Though, I think its important to reflect upon the last year of music, I'm going to do so through the use of a list. It was a fantastic year full of awesome albums, and I'm going to count down a bunch of my favorites, and give you something to listen to while reading. 40. Floating Action - Desert Etiquette Floating Action - Rincon The dusty, jangly Desert Etiquette is Floating Action's second release. The album has a great old feeling, [...]
