This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Sand Talk” by Akron/Family from the 2013 album Sub Verses on Dead Oceans . Akron/Family - Sand Talk ( MP3 ) [...]
Akron/Family are a band that has alluded me for years. I've known the name, and nothing more. However, after hearing about their killer opening set for Two Gallants at The Fillmore a few months ago, I decided to explore them. I was expected something folk leaning based on the name, but found they were something [...] The post Show Review: Akron/Family with Avi Buffalo at The Independent, 5/29/13 appeared first on Spinning Platters .
Saturday at Sasquatch! boasts mellow vibes and ethereal moments.

The Gorge is a loud and dirty amphitheater and campsite filled with great music bumpin from every corner packed with everyone from hipsters and hippies, nerds, high schoolers, old people and even a baby or two. Needless to say it is quite a unique place when Sasquatch comes through Memorial Day Weekend every year since 2002. The worst part about music festivals is the dreadful music overlap where two or three artists that you want to see play at the same time and you can't see all of them. You [...]

**Block Party Waking up early has its advantages at a music festival (“early” being a relative term and meaning roughly 8:30 in this case). First: hot water and no line for the showers. Although not an option at all campsites, hot water especially is still a “hot” commodity when this many people are involved. Secondly: a few moments of quiet, the calm before the storm if you will. There will, undoubtedly, be a group of guys playing Lawn-Pong (much like Beer-Pong but substituting a large, grassy area for a ping-pong table, buckets for Dixie cups, and full beers [...]
Apart from the fact that you're in one of the greatest North American music festival settings with a superb lineup, you get a one-up from those attending Lollapalooza, Coachella, Pitchfork or Bonnaroo... You won't share what you're watching live with the rest of the world through the Internet. Ironic that I'm writing this here, isn't it? YouTube and Sasquatch! currently don't have a partnership set up. Obviously this is due to the remoteness of Quincy's Gorge location, but it's also a huge draw. What you experience and share with you're fellow Sasq-watchers will be considerably more unique, and [...]
Killer harmonies, riff heavy jams, a new album, and free tickets just for you. It's as simple as that.

The past week saw several notable artists - many ranking among my favorites - release new tracks. Camera Obscura distributed a new track off their forthcoming album Desire Lines , Typhoon gave us a stellar digital single, and we heard a new track off the upcoming album from The Moondoggies. On top of that, I continued the show with recent tracks off new or just released records including those by Scout Niblett, The Mantles, Phosphorescent and Club 8. Weather here in NW Washington has been dreary at best, but that just [...]

Turner Cody – Last Of The Big Time Spenders (Tummy Touch) With a name like that, you can probably guess which side of the Atlantic Turner Cody calls home. Add the fact that he would also be far happier living in the 70s and you get an idea what Last Of The Big Time Spenders might sound like. Cody ups the ante however with a neat line in songwriting, especially lyrically, which leaves this an a melancholically engaging experience in the mould of Townes Van Zandt. [...]

Have a wonderful Wednesday: ► Woodkid , originally scheduled to make his L.A. debut at the Luckman last November before Superstorm Sandy confounded his travel plans, brings his highly cinematic music to the Fonda Theatre. The musical persona of French director, graphic artist and songwriter Yoann Lemoine (who's done video for a host of A-listers ), Woodkid released his album"The Golden Age" in March, and his video trilogy (that's "Run Boy Run," above) is at 28 million views and counting. Here's a post that talks about all three videos . ► Bleached [...]
