Hidden Shoal Recordings is proud to announce the release of the new freely downloadable single ' Surry Hills ' by Perth-based multi-instrumental pop sextet Apricot Rail . The single follows on from their highly praised self-titled debut album of 2009. "Imagine the ethereal pop of early Múm, the whimsy of Sigur Rós' more optimistic moments, and (occasionally) the emotional edge of The Twilight Sad. This is consummate indie post-rock laced with Australiana, and well worth checking out. " - Rave Magazine [...]

Next week is going to be a light one for new records with the July 4th holiday, which probably explains why a lot was concentrated on last Tuesday. This week is a little more manageable, but hardly sparse; though we are having a hard time figuring out a true stand out release this week. Beyonce (pictured) might be the biggest name of the week, but there's plenty more to be excited about. Alicia Keys has a reissue of her breakout, Songs in A Minor , Akron/Family has a digital EP, and Jolie [...]
Artists like Scott Walker, Tom Waits, and Nick Cave are often commended for their eccentric tendencies; their music is entirely one-of-a-kind, as thematically engrossing through narrative idiosyncrasies as their musical accompaniments are haunting. Every component sticks with the listener, granting their music a radical enigma despite never venturing into shock value or explicit fervor. Their [...]

This is Akron/Family in concert on March 4th, 2011 at the Blockley Pourhouse in Philadelphia, PA, USA. This is a superb audience based recording that made us feel almost as if we were present at the gig ourselves. Opening Acts were The Love Club and Delicate Steve. The song Another Sky (track 6) outro includes groove in the audience & a Delicate Steve member on percussion. Gravelly Mountains Of The Moon (track 7) starts in the middle, enough detail just enjoy this fine band. For those unfamiliar with [...]

Flowers bedeck the fragility of the convict and I garlanded myself, lovingly pursuing a journey through sweat, sperm and blood that led to prison. Without what people call my evil, I am castrated. Un petit-bourgeois rien. There was a moral vigour in the acceptance of my destiny. I was hot for crime. I give the [...]
Last week IRC presented the first springtime mix for 2011 (see 2010 and 2009) as part of the weekly Sunday 25 Mix. As we indicated then, there will be at least one, perhaps, two more springtime mixes, including today's mix, before it's time to unleash a new set of summer-themed playlist mixes. We doubt though [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

I feel like I worked my balls off this week and yet, I got absolutely shit accomplished. THE MAN HAS GOT ME DOWN. I feel like I can only talk in very short sentences, which is not my style, man. So today, fuck sentences. Let's listen to some jams. Cue up the playlist, fools. We're calling this one "Beware The Dinosaurs: THEY WILL FUCK YOU UP." ** The Middle East :: Hunger Song [MP3] I tell you what, this jam is so fucking relaxing, that banjo so soothing, I [...]

S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT Akron/Family - S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT By Evelyn Anne Clausen Listening to experimental rock can sometimes be more of a chore than a pleasure. I find myself thinking things like, "Yes, this is interesting, but do I actually enjoy listening to it?" Far too often, the answer is no. I'm all for experimenting in theory. I think the world needs bands who are willing to push [...]

We're coming upon a big day for nerds, collectors and small businessmen alike: the Fifth Annual International Record Store Day. Every third Saturday of April, music fanatics and retro connoisseurs band together to celebrate the dying art of crate digging at their local independent record store. Like fashion week—except it only lasts a day and the patrons are far less attractive—Record Store Day brings in new releases, old re-releases and gems from across all genres. Artists and labels, who are usually also customers, see their exclusive Record Store Day releases as a thank you to independent retailers for [...]
