This shit seriously makes me smile. Akron/Family 's latest single from their PMA approved S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT , "Silly Bears," has a wonderfully unique accompanying video, directed by Matt Brunson. It's intensely psychedelic, brimming habitually with flashing neon colors, as a spaceman travels through a two dimensional odyssey, and along the way encounters a robot, a toy horse, explosions, and of course, a wad of teddy bears who emerge from cardboard boxes. Really truly listening to an album can be difficult task to undertake. Do you play it repeatedly for a week straight? Only listen in the car? Skip tracks constantly? Pick it up again six months later to reevaluate? I don't know the answers, but I do know that perhaps the best way to really get to know that album happens when you ever-so-peacefully drift off to sleep during a gentle lulling song about fireflies, and then sit bolt upright as if awoken from the grave to chaotic unrestrained noise: "HOLY SHIT, WHAT IS HAPPENING? The latest helping of left-field psych-folk from the Brooklyn outfit is one of 2011's first great albums. The background information provided with Akron/Family's S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT would have you believe it's the group's most, well, startlingly cosmic offering yet. This new project from former member of Chicago-band Head of Femur is a series of one-man recordings made after Michael Partington left everything behind to move to Taiwan. Silly Bears So It Goes Long strange album title aside, Akron / Family's newest album is one of those albums that isn't entirely definable. The music is experimental in nature, they use audio samples, psych-rock explosions, tribal beats (see silly bears), syncopated guitar and vocals... to put it simply, the album is as wild as the title.
