My favorite local band, the K-Holes , are currently mixing their as-yet-untitled sophomore LP for the Hardly Art imprint. The second album's sure to be a great follow-up to their excellent debut on Hozac Records , since this local quintent's recent live shows tell of a compellingly primal mix of Scientists-mach-two drudgery, desolate Western twang and incisive punk. "Window in the Wall," a serpentine number from their upcoming full-length -- due out next April -- also speaks of a band stretching its own boundaries, moving above and beyond its influences to grayer and greater pastures. I recorded this a few nights ago. The mixing is shaky at points, but the idea was just to record a session despite it's flaws. There are a few really solid and ambitious transitions in my opinion. I'm starting to realize that I try to stay in the mix too long. 45 seconds is really difficult if you're not playing techno, which I generally don't play. I was fortunate enough to do a bit of an interview with the French Brodinski, Fluo Kids, and Yuksek when they passed through Los Angeles on their North American tour (quite a great tour, I might add). Yuksek recommended I listen to Alb , a sort of kraut-y, Stereolab-esque, French pop group which he worked extensively with in the studio, producing and whatnot.
