Got some recommendations for your listening on this release Tuesday. Some new, some live and then some various that just needed inclusion. First off, new album from Tim Showalter as his recording persona Strand of Oaks; Dark Shores ! After receiving the Slowcoustic favourite album of 2010 with his previous full length Pope Killdragon , you know this was a very much anticipated album. While the two albums feel like different beasts, they still have fantastic musical journeys. Dark Shores includes a bit more range than I have heard [...]
We recently posted the session that Dolorean's Al James did over at the Löyly spa in SE Portland, and here's one more tune from that session, courtesy of the Portland Sessions . This time James actually steps into the sauna, because there's nothing better for keeping a guitar in tune than some extreme humidity. That's a joke, really, because James' guitar sounds excellent (and his voice does, too), and this new, perhaps yet untitled Dolorean song is a stunner. Watch this terrific clip, and not just because you get to see James in nothing [...]
I realize the heading might be a little misleading... but that's how you get page hits, folks. Nothing says "steamy" like the red-hot, sweat-inducing music of bummed-out folkers Dolorean . Now things get even steamier : Here's Dolorean's Al James performing a couple solo tunes at Southeast spa Löyly for the Portland Sessions . The bad news: We don't get to see Al in the sauna or steam room, and he keeps his clothes on. The good news: He performs a pair of great-sounding tunes in Löyly's beautiful, atmospheric surroundings, and [...]

Seattle indie singer-songwriter Damien Jurado is an experimentalist at heart, a literate musician who built his career on a cult following, early collaborative work as an indie rock band member with high school compatriot David Bazan, and a set of early self-released, cassette-only lo-fi experimental recordings featuring found sounds, neo-punk sensibilities, and carefully constructed, heartbreakingly elegant deconstructions of tonality and narrative images. And though more recent albums, such as 2010 masterwork Saint Bartlett and aptly celebrated new 2012 release Maraquopa, feature rich harmonic elements and hollow, crystalline atmospheres mixed with the rhythmic and sonic nuances [...]

With the recent release of Maraqopa , Damien Jurado's 12th studio album Seattle Times music writer Andrew Matson received four cover songs from Damien's wife Sarah featuring musicians and bands from the Seattle area. The four part series started with Jon Russell of The Head and The Heart (who just recently did a fantastic show for Austin City Limits ) covering "Beacon Hill" from 20102s Saint Bertlett followed by Pickwick with "I Am The Greatest of All Liar" from Jurado's lesser known Holding His Breath EP from way back in [...]
Song obsessions are those songs that get stuck in your head. This series of posts isn't about what I or the other panel members think is best, but what our brain latches onto, those ear worms that loop around and around in your head. - Adrian ( me ): Geographer - Original Sin (On Airstreaming session) (mp3) ( buy original ) Geographer live >> Geographer on record. That's just a fact. And, personally, I like their stripped versions [...]
For a panicked month and a half or so this year, I worried I had ruined myself. You see, after the explosion of The Head and The Heart and my avowed love for many things Americana, my inbox and mailbox was inundated by every band with a banjo, a slight twang and sweet harmonies. And [...]
The Unfazed is the fourth album from Dolorean , a Portland OR-based folk/rock and alt-country collective led by singer/songwriter Al James. The music is both grandly conceived and meticulously crafted on a smaller human scale, intelligent and thoughtful without being weighed down by it's own refined ambition. In the past, James has attempted to bring a looser feel to the band's sound, particularly on the more improvisational 2007 album You Can't Win . But the graceful arc, quiet force and organic sound that has marked the Dolorean sound remains the critical focal point. [...]

Website Myspace I don't usually put up full shows without either the band website clearly indicating they are o.k. with taping, or other tapers having received permission in the past, or evidence on band forums of open discussion regarding available tapes. With Al James, however, i'm going to take the word of a couple of emails, and comments on my Richmond Fontaine show, from fans indicating that he is o.k. with taping. Clearly, if you represent Al or Doloreon and this is not actually the case, [...]
