Here's our latest month-in-review mix collecting some our favorite new (or new to us) songs recently posted on the website. So much good stuff came our way in April that we've actually got a two-part mix of blog songs this time. As always, we've included links below to download each of these songs individually. Mixtape: Best of the Blog April 2012 (Part 1) Mixtape: Best of the Blog April 2012 (Part 2) Tracklisting: [...]

Wednesday, April 25, 2012 This weekend is the 5th Annual Austin Pysch Fest, which is a three day long event featuring some of the nation's best psychedelic bands. For the first time the festival is being held at Emo's East and the Beauty Ballroom on East Riverside Drive. While the festival doesn't begin until Friday, there will be a pre-fest party at Red 7 tomorrow night featuring Indian Jewelry, Christian Bland and the Revelators, the Wolf and more. For those lucky enough [...]

Here's an interesting fusion: San Francisco garage rockers Burnt Ones have invited producer Al Lover to put his hip hop spin on their psychedelic lo-fi guitar pop track "Meet the Golden One." Lover adds a persistent hi-hat and extra reverb, turning the track into a genre-bending mix of fuzz, guitar rock, and some seriously nervous drum chattering. The Meet the Golden One 73 is out now . Burnt Ones - Meet the Golden One (Al Lover Remix) by Al Lover [...]

Two Gallants at the Google Live Lot. 03/16/12 I present to you some photos of just a few of the Bay Area bands that played SXSW this year. I'm only one man, so I called on a couple friends to contribute photos as well. But even still, there was only so wide a net we could cast. For the first time in years, for instance, I somehow managed to not catch a single Thee Oh Sees concert — but have no fear, a Spin photographer captured this amazing moment (seriously, [...]

San Francisco's (honestly though- where else could this guy be from?) Al Lover continues to lovingly fuse '60s psych and garage rock with cleverly produced boom-bap on the new release Ballin' Chains And B-Movies - and this time he brought friends. Mike G and Mark Pantoja of Lover's new band, The Haters, are all over this release, causing bona fide pawnshop-guitar havoc over RZA-influenced boom-bap. While the idea of not one but two live guitars sounds a little over-the-top, over-the-top is actually the cornerstone of Al Lover's vision, and he directs The Haters masterfully, keeping their fuzzy, [...]

Heavy Hippies - Cheapdrugsfreelove by Al Lover Fresh off the Al Lover Bandcamp , here's a new set of instrumentals that combine the schools of hip hop, garage rock, and psychedelic rock. The sounds that come together on this thing are hard, heavy, and grimy. Tons of wailing solos, tarnished guitar chords, and lumbering beats. I also wanna note that Al is pretty great when it comes to mixing his sounds with the sounds he's sampling. It's almost as if the hip hop beats he's throwing against these vintage rock [...]
Bay Area producer Al Lover is back on it this week with Heavy Hippies - Cheapdrugsfreelove , in which he continues to mine old garage-rock and psych records for gold and re-assemble them into jagged, reverb and fuzz-drenched hip-hop instrumentals. Turns out ancient pawn-shop guitars, savagely overdriven tube amps, cheap organs and manipulated analog tape sound great out of their original context, and Al Lover treats the material with respect, even reverence. He's clearly just as enamored with Roky Erikson as he is with Clams Casino , making this unusual cross-breeding of psych and hip-hop more of a [...]
"Smoke Filled Thrills" is the second single from Al Lover 's Satanic Tambourines , showcased here in video form. Al Lover is known for his remix mixtapes , and Satanic Tambourines is his tape release that came out last November . Chopped and screwed psych and garage rock? Sign me up. Shapes Have Fangs - "Terlingua" (Al Lover remix) White Fence - "Sticky Fruitman Has Faith" (Al Lover remix) That's one of the things Al Lover does. He's a producer from San Francisco who over the last few years has gained notoriety for his melding of garage and psychedelic rock into spacey, hip hop-style instrumentals. One of his recent projects, "Distorted Reverberations," samples current psych [...]

Although we are technically done with 2011, we can still enjoy 2011 music retrospectives. For those interested, the mixtape master Al Lover has released a free mix of his favorite local tunes from 2011, all remix-style: Yeah, yeah, everyone's chopping and screwing things these day, I know, but I love it. What can I say I'm from the south. I've been wanting to do this for a while but never got around to it, so in the spirit of the holidays I figured I would ruin some of my [...]

The most wonderful time of the year, right guys? 'Twas the end of December, and all through the blogosphere, not a creature was stirring, except for the sounds of music writers springin' chub, strokin' egos, and Bon Iverin' via the storied tradition of the "best of" list. Well, The Decibel Tolls participates in that jive as well, save for the latter. Be it as it may. So yeah, man... 2011... shit. 2011 was a turbulent and gnarly year, and as such, we've been treated to some truly stellar music. Funny how that works - civic and economic tension [...]
