By the second half of 1978 I was clearly done with punk — much like the rest of the civilised world. Now the word was Grease, even if You're The One That I Want became unbearably overplayed. Other than a really great roadtrip holiday, the latter part of 1978 seems to have been quite uneventful for me: I cannot remember anything interesting at all happening other than playing football in ankle-deep snow in winter. ... From 1976 through 1979 you couldn't find a rock AM radio station that didn't have one or more Al Stewart songs in the rotation. Hits such as "The Year Of The Cat," "On The Border" and "Time Passages" provided a steady and jazzy folk rock background to the times. Ten years earlier Bob Dylan crashed his motorcycle and was injured. During his convalescence he wrote demos for other up and coming talent including "This Wheel's On Fire" for Julie Driscoll ; "You Ain't Going Nowhere" for The Byrds [...]

And this will be the final New York mix. There are still plenty of songs that I have not used, but 92 New York-related tracks should suffice. In fact, I'll add on eight tracks to round the number up to 100. The timeline on this mix spans 116 years, which surely is quite unusual as far as mixes go. So we have the U.S. Marine Band from 1894 and two songs from outstanding 2010 albums, by the wonderful Caitlin Rose and Ray Lamontagne. I owe the Ben Sidran track to reader Marivic (thank you). I'm sorry I've been a little slow in posting this week. I've been trying my best of combine getting underway in a new job, finding time to work out so I don't lost complete control of my weight and watching the baseball playoffs. I'm sleeping about five and a half hours a night these days and what I'm doing is physically unsustainable. Well, at least at my age. I've missed a few Rock Star celebrity birthdays, but I'm going to backdate a couple shortly so be on the lookout for those. I think most of you get pointed in our [...]
Al Stewart had found his voice on Past, Present & Future and found his sound on Modern Times. He then perfected it all on 1976's Year of the Cat, arguably his masterpiece. There is no overarching... Download your favourite album at The Mood Indicator

Can't stop spinnin' those singles! Today we listen to a handful from the other side of the Big Pond, from our friends in the United Kingdom. They will take us on a little tour of the isles across the ocean. Let's begin in the northern Isles ... in Scotland, where Al Stewart comes from. Stewart, best known for the 1976 hit album Year Of The Cat (and its title track, a hit single), has also worked with a number of big names including Alan Parsons, Jimmy Page and Rick Wakeman. Stewart followed [...]
Bert Janch and John Renbourn were the swinging London singer/songwriter movement ambassadors to the world. Hanging around the London Soho and playing constantly in the leading folk club of the time – Les Cousins, they gained reputation as admirable icons of acoustic guitar players and stunning songwriting. They both released couple of albums and built [...]
If it is songs with a historical bent that ye seek, then look no further than Al Stewart 's 1973 vintage concept in time travel, Past, Present & Future. Stewart himself is certainly a much-traveled man. Born a Scot, raised in rural England, a resident of London's Soho in the late sixties, and a Californian for the past 34 years, the singer-guitarist and songwriter has earned plaudits for his particular brand of folk–rock on both sides of the Atlantic. This album almost serves as a potted history of the twentieth century and the original cover art features [...]

You can imagine the financial peril upon which I teeter every day having a used record store just a few blocks from my house. It's like being a junkie living next door to a crack house. I'm fairly disciplined, though. I'm still wont to spending no more than 50 cents for a piece of used vinyl. Imagine how I lit up whilst shuffling through the 25 cent boxes, finding Michael Bloomfield 's It's Not Killing Me , Leo Kottke 's My Feet Are Smiling and Al Stewart 's Modern Times [...]
Sam Roberts Brother Down In honour of Michelle Adelman's birthday (happy birthday!), the trainspotter who pointed out the similarities between Al Stewart and Dan Bejar/Destroyer , and also, as Chris Clark told me, Dan Bejar being mistaken for Montreal's Sam Roberts, here are two songs. That's all y'get. Chris Clark's favourite Sam Roberts' song is Brother Down (probably the bongos), whereas I'm more of a Bridge to Nowhere guy, but they're both solid.
Scotland. The country that claims Braveheart, kilts, the Loch Ness Monster, and single-malt whisky has been the birthplace and home to many of music's greatest artists. From folk to hard rock, here's a look at ten great Scottish acts. 1. Lonnie Donegan – Lonnie Donegan's influence on a generation of musicians has been huge, particularly in and around Britain, where his blending of blues, country, folk, and jazz ushered in the "skiffle" craze. Thousands of young wannabes got swept up, including a pre-Beatles Paul McCartney. Recommended album: Rides Again . 2. Donovan [...]
Man I just plain love these old video clips from BBC2's music television show The Old Grey Whistle Test . In its sixteen year run The Old Grey Whistle Test featured some of the greatest TV music performances from a Who's Who of legendary performers. The Stones, David Bowie, Tom Waits, The Kinks, early U2 and R.E.M., XTC, the Wailers, even Captain Beefheart! and the list just goes on and on and on...If you haven't taken the time to check out some of the Whistle Test performances, set aside a good hour, and [...]

I finally got around to checking off Running With Scissors from my "to watch list." Don't bother checking the review on IMDB .com, it's deceiving. Running With Scissors is not your traditional movie and maybe that is what makes it so enjoyable. It tells the story of a boy who has had to endure the odd tosses and turns of life; growing up around his suicidal and murderous parents, being adopted into overly unsanitary living conditions, and being neglected by his own mother...to name just a few of his journal entries. [...]
