My folks are spending a couple of months in Rottingdean down on the South coast, and after the Meursault, Rob St. John and Withered Hand gig at the Islington Assembly Hall in London on Tuesday I have come down to spend a few days with them, before pootling on back to Edinburgh tomorrow. This may not excuse but most certainly does explain the fact that the blog has been slightly more erratic than usual this week. I've squeezed in posts where I can, but parents don't take all that kindly to you spending your entire visit buggering about [...]

Considering how incredibly brilliant they are at so many things (like becoming epoch-definingly rich, for example) Google is remarkably awful at email spam. Awful to the point that their spam folder is an active nuisance, and the messages they divert into the damn thing seem to be entirely random. Senders I have marked as spam don't always go in there, personal emails - even those sent to one recipient only - occasionally do end up in there, and the rest of them seem to be just a random selection of stuff people send me, with no rhyme or [...]
This year's Camden Crawl just keeps growing! Yet more bands and even some comedians have been added to the already stellar lineup for the May Bank Holiday weekend extravaganza that takes over the music capital of London. Joining the likes of Death In Vegas , Rolo Tomassi and Alabama 3 , are the Scottish indie-rock titans Glasvegas , dancey post-punkers the Futureheads , and former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes will be performing a solo show. Also announced for the jam-packed weekend of [...]

We tip toe from genre to genre on this blog and after yesterday's dunk in the sweetest of pop we are now turning to something with an altogether more gritty aesthetic. Don't worry though, as tomorrow we'll serve up yet more saccharine goodies, as The Recommender continues to dish up it's chocolate box of treats. Duologue are a five-piece from London who started appearing in one-off shows last year, such as December 's showcase gig held by fellow blogger, Jamila Scott, from Fucking Dance/ Cruel Rhythm . Since then they've released a self-titled EP, which arrived last [...]
Filed under: The Hit List After exhausting the James Brown, Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes archives, rap producers have found an unlikely new source for their samples: indie music. Whether it's Jay-Z biting from little-known soul revival outfits like the Menahan Street Band or Lupe Fiasco gettin' busy over Radiohead, indie rock is showing up on more hip-hop and R&B hits than Lil Wayne. Since Kanye [...]

A review of Bob Dylan's 4th of July gig at Thomond Park, Limerick Continue reading
Whoever thought mixing acid house and country could even edge towards a good idea? Alabama 3 , clearly, though to be fair they have edged a fair way from their original remit these days. Marking their eighth effort in 13 years, Revolver Soul sees the super-group (well, considering all those extra contributors) in dingy, irrepressibly funky form and wearing their James Brown-like sexuality on their collective, seductive sleeves. Revolver Soul probably dabbles in as many genres as your iPod on shuffle, fusing them all with the inimitably deep vocals of Larry Love and Dr. D. [...]

Alabama 3 join Seasick Steve & David Gray as the third support act for Bob Dylan's Fourth of July gig at Thomond Park, Limerick

Indiependence takes place in Mitchelstown, Cork over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Weekend tickets are priced at €79 camping or €59 non-camping from ticketgroup.ie . For full line-up [...]

Johnny Cash was born 78 years ago today in Arkansas and, like most popular musicians following their deaths, his records are still being released and his music is as popular as ever. The sixth and, presumably, final release in the Rick Rubin-produced American Recordings series came out this week. American VI: Ain't No Grave was put together from songs left over from the sessions for the previous instalment. Like most of the albums in the series, the songs deal with death and mortality. To aid my research I've been reading a graphic novel about Cash that I've borrowed from my [...]

Today's act is probably one of your best all-time examples of how "selling out" is, in fact, a fantastic idea... ... although Alabama 3 claim on their website that the use of their song "Woke Up This Morning" as the theme song for The Sopranos "...bought someone a swimming pool, but it sure wasn't any of us..." Now, I find this kinda hard to believe... unless, of course, they were a bunch of idiots and signed a bad deal. They wouldn't be the first. [...]

So what in the world's come over you, And what in heaven's name have you done, You've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness, You're out there running just to be on the run Love this track, w ritten by the great John Prine it first appeared on his 1986 album German Afternoons, by this time Prine had being recognised as a great songsmith and [...]
Cuff the Duke’s new album, Way Down Here , was released in Canada last week. I’m pleased to report that it’s really quite good. It got me thinking about several things, but first, we can discuss the new album. Cuff the Duke are a band that have never been afraid to wear their hearts on their proverbial sleeves. Their songs are unabashedly emotional, and while previous effort Sidelines of the City was enjoyable, I felt that they lost that vulnerability to a certain extent. This new record seems them return to making the [...]

The sixth instalment of Electric Picnic takes place this weekend in Stradbally, County Laois. It began as a one-day fest in 2004 and I attended it in 2005 when it turned into a two-day festival. I saw some great acts that year such as Kraftwerk, the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Nick Cave and Toots & the Maytals. The atmosphere was very relaxed and the crowd was nice and chilled out. It's been a three-day event since 2006 and is still a big draw. I would have loved to have gone this year, but I'm a bit light of [...]

Pictured: Tunng Big Wheel Sundays returns in August for another summer season of concerts at the stunning Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park. Guests include British Sea Power, Tunng and Alabama 3 . “This was a thoroughly pleasant way to spend an evening - listening to rich warm music - in a twinkly alfresco setting as a gentle breeze hissed through the trees” ( Daily Telegraph ) “One of the great and simple rituals of London life” ( Financial Times ) Big [...]
