It was a beautiful day at the Jersey Shore, perfect weather for a night at The Stone Pony Summer Stage. The show kicked off with Moon Taxi from Nashville, TN. They have a southern feel to their songs, reminding me a lot of Kings of Leon and the Alabama Shakes. At one point during their set the lead singer Trevor Terndrup yells out “Home of Bruce!” and the crowd goes wild. They closed with “Cabaret” and as the [...]

In January there was a list of seven or eight records I had heard were on the way that I was excited to hear. Surprisingly only two records from that list makes up my favorite records of 2012 (so far). The last thing I want to do here is focus on negatives so even though I haven’t been overwhelmed with amazing releases so far this year there are several that deserve a second mention and a little bit of your spare change. So, in no particular order, here are a few of my favorites from the first half of the [...]

Words // Scott Pingeton To see Alabama Shakes live is to believe in the buzz. They will convert you. They will knock you on your ass. If you see this band and don't believe in the power of rock n' roll, check your pulse. Their show at the Paradise in April was hands down one of the greatest shows I've ever seen, and I've seen a few. No doubt their set at Newport Folk will be one of the highlights of the weekend. Complete live recording from the April [...]

It’s a cruel and unusual plan to have a four day festival this full-on. It’s fair to say we peaked on Saturday. A wealth of vastly different music pushed us to the limit, and winding down after the last gig at 4am still took a few hours so Dr. John’s Sunday afternoon slot slipped away as we pulled off the essential eye-mask and looked at our watch. A stroll around the site was in order catching the social aspects of the festival. People were potting plants in wellies, there was a swing section (as in tyres hanging from ropes, not [...]

The daily lineups were finally announced (now all we need are some actual set times). Saturday is definitely the day not to miss. Which day are you most excited about? More at sfoutsidelands.com

Easily the biggest story to come out of last month's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival was D'Angelo's headlining appearance at the ?uestlove curated Superjam, marking the first time that the reclusive neo-soul singer had appeared on an American stage in over 12 years. D'Angelo, who is rumored to be almost done with this first album since his seminal release Voodoo in 2000, will continue with his comeback. He announced that he will be teaming up with Mary J. Blige later this summer for Liberation Tour. The joint tour, which has only reveled six dates, [...]

D.L. Anderson A veritable deluge of new album information came across the desk in the last day or so, though it could well have been delivered in a box of animal crackers. First and least expectedly - at least I wasn't expecting one - is a new Mountain Goats album entitled Transcendental Youth due out on October 2. There's no sample track yet - not even one of those album trailers that are de rigeur these days - but instead and arguably better are a couple of essays about [...]

Alabama Shakes at Central Park Summerstage in June ( more by Chris La Putt ) Alabama Shakes have been having a pretty great year.
