In response to the suddenly revived blog interest in The Gossip's years-old cover of Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody" , here's a couple other not-so-new, but still impressive, indie-dressed remakes of old R&B hits that are equally deserving of some re-pimping: Rio En Medio "Let's Groove (Earth Wind & Fire Cover)" Coming off of a mid-to-late-'70's peak commercial period that produced such R&B classics/ deathless wedding reception staples as "Shining Star", "Got To Get You Into My Life", "Boogie Wonderland" and "September", Earth Wind & Fire were no doubt [...]

Myspace // "Love Lockdown" (Kanye West cover) [Audio] // "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)" [Video] Jumping feet first into the burgeoning and crowded new English folk scene, Londoner Alan Pownall has already made a name for himself via his unique takes on pop hits from Kanye West and Beyonce, but come 22 June, listeners will be able to look past what some may call gimmicky moves when Young and Lost Club releases his debut single. [...]

This week I am piling on the music snobbery. Oh, okay, I'm not really - if anything I'm undermining it with some truly guilty pleasures. There's not much modern fluffy pop music which I happen to enjoy despite my snobbery because... well, because I just don't think there's anything I can think of which fits that bill at the moment. I know nostalgic guilty pleasures and truly embracing low-brow music purely for the enjoyment of it aren't quite the same thing but I think I've budged about as far as I am going to go on this one. [...]

The post below got deleted. And I'm very very annoyed. All of them were remixes. Twats. Anyway, the world goes on. The latest thing that seems to have dropped on the blogesphere is the Diplo remix of MGMT's 'Time To Pretend'. It's terrible. A complete waste of 4 minutes of my life, but then again, I'm not a Diplo fan. It really pisses me off when you can tell it's a really shite song, yet people will still post it. Now within 24 hours there are 5 different blogs in the popular track listings with it on. Here [...]
Short and sweet today folks. I have somehow managed to amass a mini-collection of cover songs over the past few weeks, and I thought I'd share them with the Muffin. I know that some people may not be especially fond of this 'genre', but I am definitely an all out cover ...

I know, I know. Covers/ remixes of "Love Lockdown" seem so 2008 right about now, but this stripped-down rendering of the 808s & Heartbreak lead-in by buzzworthy London singer-songwriter Alan Pownall is still worth mentioning. Effectively recreating the track with a swampy, New Orleans-styled grit that explodes into a disparate acoustic playground on the hook, Pownall's down-home take ultimately sounds like it could have been the original (and dare we say, superior) "Lockdown" incarnation that Kanye covered instead. If Kanye truly [...]

how pleasant it was to bump into the charming Mr Hudson , of & The Library, fresh from touring with Kanye West and looking very well for it. We first met Mr H when we put him and his band on in February 2006, it seems a long time ago now and of course we didn't know then that he'd be hanging with the big players a short way down the line - but we're very happy for him that success seems to be swinging his way... Another young gent from the London scene is Alan [...]

Well kind of. I'v got three lovely songs for you to download and spread the word of their talent. You can listen to all three on the flash player. Train Station Car Park and other downloads are available off their myspace. myspace.com/williamstommusic and it's full of songs just as good as this. Which is very good. Alan Pownall has posted a new song on his myspace. I still don't know anything about him, although now I have deciphered that he has some kind of mohican and his ear pierced through his new picture. But that's all. [...]

Alan Pownall remains a complete mystery to me. On his myspace there is only one song, no bio or anything. But then you go on other artists myspaces and see that he is in their influences section. What I do know though, is that this song is absolutely beautiful despite the first five seconds sounding like The Calling's 'Wherever You Will Go'! This is highly recommended. Feedback appreciated lovely readers =] Colorful Day - Alan Pownall
