Alan Price: Justice [ purchase ] We all want justice but you got to have the money to buy it/ You'd have to be a fool to close your eyes and deny it. A cynical sentiment from former Animal Alan Price, "Justice" is one of the minor cuts on his O Lucky Man! soundtrack. (So you can imagine how great the major cuts are.) Price appears in the Lindsay Anderson film in the same Greek Chorus role as Jonathan Richman in "There's Something [...]

On August 12, the 800-person capacity venue called le poisson rouge in New York City's Greenwich Village hosted English soaring stars and PopWreckoning favorites Friendly Fires , supported by Brooklyn's own Phenomenal Handclap Band . I'd never seen a gig in "the city that never sleeps" prior to this and let me tell you, I was the one who couldn't sleep after the amazing showmanship put on by both bands this night. Simply based on number of members, the Phenomenal Handclap Band would be best described as [...]

photo by Davida Nemeroff Heartless Bastards - "Sway" Today is a day of real emotion. If you see me today, we'll probably fall in love. If you cross me today, I might get in my first fist fight. If you even look at me today, we'll have words. I have calm-faced and straight-backed and completely nutritional cabin fever and I'm ready to explode. I can see my house from a satellite, I can see people from my window, I see no one, [...]

Hmm, I said I wouldn't go digging out every version, and Credence Clearwater + Marilyn Manson + The Animals didn't make the grade. Also I haven't yet tried to locate covers by The Eels, Bonnie Tyler (whose version I heard a clip of, and it sounded good), Roxy Music, Brian Ferry, Them, Nick Cave, Manfred Mann etc etc & err, nor will I most likely, unless more than one or two people ask; but Arthur Brown did one too, which has to be worth a listen - saw him at The Joiners in Southampton in the mid-90's I think, what [...]
Following numerous critically acclaimed tours and due to public demand, Maximum Rhythm N' Blues is back, once again boasting some of the finest rhythm & blues talent ever assembled on one stage before. These artists learned their craft by playing the exciting 60s London club circuit in such famous clubs of the time as 'The Flamingo', 'Klooks Kleeks', 'Ricky Ticks', 'The Scene', 'Eel Pie Island', the 'Crawdaddy', 'Ronnie Scotts' and 'The 101 Club' creating the birth of British Rhythm N Blues. Alongside the Stones & the Yardbirds, The Manfreds were very much [...]

Volume One is here. This is Volume Two of our Multiple Mondays collection of ever-so-many versions of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' voodoo classic. (I'll only post Volume Three if someone specifically requests it.) Volume Two focuses on rockin' garage band covers (except for the Joe Cocker version), almost all from the 1960s. I haven't made any effort to arrange these in chronological order, since most of them were recorded within about five years of each other, and I can't hear any evidence that any of them inspired any of the others in any significant way. [...]

On some Mondays, I'll post multiple versions of songs. This week, we hear from Mr. Randy Newman, and his ursine companion. Randy Newman wrote this song back in 1965, and took it to his friends in Harpers Bizarre (best known for their cover of "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)"). They recorded it in 1967, followed closely by Alan Price , who'd just left The Animals to pursue his solo dreams. Harry Nilsson recorded it in 1969, and then Newman himself finally recorded it in 1972. The [...]
