One of the hardest things about doing a blog, I believe, is staying consistent. It's one thing to say you do a blog, it's another thing to actually do it and do it day in and day out. As of late I've been struggling with that very concept. Not because I don't enjoy doing this, because trust me I love this, but simply because I've been buried in work. If you read POP! Stereo regularly you'll know that I was on vacation a couple of weeks ago. Upon my return I was greeted with over 1100 emails. That's [...]
Indie/Jazz is not a genre I've really explored. Or heard of until now. And it seems a little mismatched, but Feelin' Citrus is such a balanced combination of both worlds. Beginning with "Today Is A Postcard" opens with guitar and horns and in comes the vocals with a deep reverb that brightens up [...]
Here are three more artists to take a listen to over this long weekend:Alan Singley and Pants MachineFor those who like: Apples In Stereo, Death Cab For CutieThis Portland artist makes sugary sweet indie pop that would have The Shins shaking in their collective boots.Alan Singley's MyspaceThe XXFor those who like: Ladytron, Beta BandHailing from London, England this group makes indie pop with a

Alan Singley And The Pants Machine 's "Le Rain" is a classic case of infectious indie pop. The song clashes to very unique sounds to create a third sound entirely its own. On one end, you have vocal hooks reminiscent of, say, Ben Kweller. Interesting, yes. But surround that sound with the folksy indie pop of artists like Ezra Furman. Marry those two signature sounds and the resulting lovechild could very easily be "Le Rain". "Le Rain" is off Feelin' Citrus by Alan Singley And The [...]
The first thing that strikes you when you listen to Feelin' Citrus, the forthcoming album from Alan Singley and Pants Machine (out August 25th), is the breezy summertime pop feel of tracks like "Le Rain". There are more layers to the Portland ensemble's sound than pure pop. "Beautiful Dayna" and "Calendars" feature a lush production erected around lovely string arrangements. Horns are

It was absolutely no surprise that these folks were from Portland. Putting aside the obvious hint contained in the song's subject matter ('Le Rain'), it just feels like a bunch of friends from Portland getting together and making a song on a stormy afternoon (from the look of the above picture, that sums it up pretty well). Despite their notoriously rainy surroundings, bands from Portland seem to have an uncanny knack for making effortlessly endearing sunshine pop. I'm reminded of early Ted Leo and elements of The Shins, though that might not give you a completely accurate picture. And despite [...]

We are the sheep that flock to the Portland music scene, but who isn't! A city that harbors such innovation and beauty within their pop tunes really should get as much props as possible. Just got this tune in the 'ol email from Alan Singley & Pants Machine and after reading Alan's statement, "I was riding my bike in the rain looking for a job and through a fake French accent I just started singing the hook off the top of my head. Its a bike-love song, written in a gritty Portland basement, fueled by a forty," this [...]

Oh man, that Alan Singley. It's been three years since Singley and his band, Pants Machine, released a record, and I can only imagine how many bike rides he's been on since then. Set to drop in two weeks on Bladen Country Records, Feelin' Citrus is a super fun, sunny blast of uptempo songs, jaunty pianos and horn arrangements—almost like Burt Bacharach covering a set of Pavement b-sides. The first single is "Le Rain," and we're happy to share it with you today. Here's what Singley says about the song: Download audio file (LeRain.mp3) [...]

"Linoleum" by Alan Singley is the perfect song for a documentary. Maybe one about Portland and the current explosion in it's indie-pop scene. It'd play perfectly as a closing piece, the credits rolling and Singley's child-like warble narrating the score's finale. The opening bars of piano conjure instant feelings of comfort and familiarity, as if the soundtrack to your routine childhood walk to school, or first kiss. Alan Singley and Pants Machine finished out their set Friday night at Backspace with the tune, putting a cap on an energetic and well-rounded performance. [...]
