The Blues, the beginning of Rock and Rock as we now know it. It's a musical genre, a feeling, a philosophy, and for some, a way of life. The Blues can lift you up one day only to describe an awful feeling inside the next. From 'Blues Power' to 'Folsom Prison Blues' the music is a powerful medium through which many men and women have articulated the highs and lows of life on earth. Below are my top ten Blues musicians of all time ranging from the originator Robert Johnson to the modern day shredder Jack White. 1. [...]

Legendary blues album sweetened with five bonus tracks In a career that stretched more than forty years, blues guitarist and singer Albert King waxed a lot of fine material, but none finer than this 1967 collection for Stax. "Collection," rather than "album," as this set was the culmination of a number of individual sessions that had previously been released as singles. So while there wasn't a tight set of dates focused on recording a long player, there are several elements that turned the singles into a coherent statement. First was the combination of King, [...]

Left handed guitarists are a rare breed among musicians. However some of the most famous guitar players of all time were left-handed players. Playing a left-handed guitar may be unconventional but there’s no arguing that the following lefties are nothing to scoff at: Jimi Hendrix Jimi was born naturally left-handed, but his father, Al, believed that left-handedness was unnatural and sinful and forced him to play his guitar right-handed. Eventually, Jimi was actually able to play with both hands. He modified his guitars, restringing them to be able to play them left-handed, and ultimately he even [...]

The inductees have been announced for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Heart , Randy Newman , Albert King , Donna Summer , Public Enemy , and Rush have all been inducted in the “performer” category and Lou Adler and Quincy Jones receive the “Ahmet Ertegun” Award (for non-performer induction). Now I have some thoughts on the whole election season. I am not even remotely surprised that Public Enemy got in. With the Rock Hall’s recent [...]
As we all know, there's nothing more relevant than the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. How else would we remember and recognize the greatness of bands like Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and the Clash if not for such an institution? And what better captures rock and roll's spirit of youthful defiance than the Hard Rock Cafe a museum in Cleveland? But I digress. The RNRHOF's 2013 inductees have been announced, and they are: Read More...

Legendary bluesman finds the funk at Stax King first developed his resume as a bluesman in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, recording singles for Parrot, Bobbin, King and Coun-Tree; but he really defined himself to the public with his move toMemphisand signing to Stax in 1966. Initially paired with Booker T. & the MGs, King recorded signature tunes that included “Crosscut Saw” and “Born Under a Bad Sign,” but starting in the early ‘70s, he latched onto the Stax soul groove with this 1972 release. Backed by the Bar-Kays and Isaac Hayes’ Movement, [...]
