WORDS AND PHOTOS by ANDREW DANIELS This past weekend marked the inaugural All Points West festival at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. Originally intended to be the "Coachella of the East" when the event was first rumored earlier this year, Goldenvoice/AEG instead delivered a less-than-stellar lineup when the performers were announced. The bill read like two Radiohead shows and one Jack Johnson show , with a bunch of indie acts ranging from notable to "who?" in the support slots. However, that didn't stop [...]
Technically New Jersey considering the venue where Saturday's Download Festival occurred resides just across the Delaware River in Camden, NJ. Regardless of its actual location, Download: Philadelphia, run by Live Nation and partnered with SPIN, was a great (if exhausting) day filled with even better music. Leave it to Live Nation and SPIN to put [...]

i first came across alberta cross a few months ago, when their seven song debut was released in the states & the track, "lucy rider", was popping up on more than a couple sites, but i guess they sort of got lost in the shuffle...well, my loss...this east london duo is really good & while they may wear their influences on their sleeves, they've definitely got their own voice...still, it doesn't hurt that those influences include "the band, van morrison, & leonard cohen"...if you're not already familiar, check these guys out. download: [...]

well, per the usual, cmj is totally kicking my ass. i'm on my second cup of coffee and my lotus notes at work is making me go cross-eyed. nevertheless, so far it has been a pretty fun though also fairly tame marathon thus far. Monday night I wen to the Syndicate party, which is usually the highlight for me. The downside this year was that it was a really expensive cash bar (BOO?!?!?), the upside was that I got to see/oogle We Are Scientists, one of my personal faves. They have a new album coming out in [...]

It seems like every week I have a new favorite band. I've been hooked on Port O'Brien for a while now, but Alberta Cross pulled the rug out from under me and has dominated my player for the past 5 days. Their self-produced debut album, The Thief and The Heartbreaker , is phenomenal. These London rockers look to the past for influence, but their sound is not contrived. The album kicks off with the title track, slowly building from percussion to added bass line to guitar solo, before it all starts melting together into [...]

Southern California is going to experience rain for the first time in 5 months this weekend as a winter storm moves inland off the coast. Temperatures are going to drop considerably and heavy showers are expected on Friday. [ Read More At NBC4] The second even a drop of water hits SoCal freeways L.A. motorists turn into raving idiots. I can't wait for SUVs with 26" gold plated spinners to blaze past me at 75 MPH tomorrow during my commute. Seriously though, don't be moron. If [...]

I had every intention of turning your ears onto Alberta Cross last Friday, but some pertinent events kept me detained for (nearly) the entire weekend. It's a Monday now - what better way to start the week than with some great new music? And boy, oh boy! Alberta Cross sounds delightful. Hailing from London, Alberta Cross share a sound that conjures up similarities to a British My Morning Jacket and a label with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Snow Patrol, and The Maccabees . The two band members, Petter and Terry, combine Swedish [...]

While listening to the opening track of Alberta Cross 's debut LP The Thief & the Heartbreaker (which also happens to be the title track), you are instantly transported back in time to some point in the 70's with Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young playing in the background. It's uncanny how close the resemblance is; in fact it sounds like it could be a missing studio track that never made a CSNY album. Unlike CSNY though, Alberta Cross formed in London in this century, not the last. Their debut is short, [...]

It's as wholesome as Neil Young grooving with The Doors with rollicking piano chords, stately organ, chunky guitars and yearning harmonies of industrial strength plaid with just a whiff of patchouli .- musicOMH.com Absolutely sounds like some nostalgic Neil Young, and you can hear a little of The Verve in some of their work, too. mp3: The Devil's All You Ever Had [...]
"Someone told me/It's all happening at the zoo/ I do believe it/I do believe it's true." Rather than barbecuing or parading, I spent my Memorial Day weekend on a quest to find the king of the ice. Yesterday my crew and I got on a train and headed due north -- to the heart of the Bronx. Simon & Garfunkel - At The Zoo We started [...]

Pop Levi - Skip Ghetto After seeing Pop Levi perform at Coachella, we have been all about him here at Quarterlife. I think, back in the 60's, he was frozen so that in the year 2007 he could come back and show people once again how to play guitar and play righteous tunes. The guy did the robot on stage while soloing with his guitar behind his head. And on top of all his showmanship, he also writes some good songs. website purchase album [...]

Release Date: 05.07.07 Alberta Cross ain't no dude, it's a three piece of country blues influenced Brits lead by Petter Ericson Stakee, a baying bloke who spent a great deal of his youth confronting culture clashes between Sweden and London, whose unkempt blond hair and six shooter getup, cause him to strangely resemble a David Spade impersonation of Tom Petty. The Thief & The Heartbreaker is deeply rooted in the purple mountain majesty of American folk, as it charmingly warms hearts into submission. Granted, they are biscuit dunking tea [...]

The big Y-man, Danny's roommate, could fill a book with his knowledge of ragtime and classical music. Let's see what he has to say: Seaboard Stomp -- Blind Arthur Blake This is from an original recording from the early twentieth century by "The King of Ragtime Guitar." Blind Blake was born around 1893 and died about 1933. I love this song because it is an artifact from the past and fascinating to hear how [...]

I didn't get any work done yesterday, but I got a ton of new music. These are my favorite tracks, mostly from artists I read about on the blogs listed to the right: Alberta Cross – Lucy Rider (acoustic) Alberta Cross – Old Man Chicago J. Tillman [...]

Alberta Cross - Lucy Rider (acoustic) I bring this song to you without knowing anything about Alberta Cross , who they are or what they sound like, except that they're from London. But it is a good song, with its heart somewhere between Turin Brakes and My Morning Jacket and a voice that blows leaves around the street. And that chorus, a lost child, trying to understand something intolerable like loss. Yes! Owen Duff - Act of War Next up is [...]
