Alela Diane has announced that she'll perform two very special shows at the end of the month. She's performing solo and acoustic at the cozy and historic Oaks Pioneer Church in Sellwood. Diane initially announced a single show on Wednesday, February 29 (pffft, that isn't even a real date) but naturally, all 50 tickets promptly sold out so she has just added a second show on Tuesday, February 28. Ryan Francesconi opens the Wednesday show, while Evan Way of the Parson Red Heads will open the Tuesday show. Diane is in the midst of working [...]

Here's the playlist: 1. Wilco - One Sunday Morning (Song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend) 2. City Reign - Anywhere Anyway 3. The Mountain Goats - Never Quite Free 4. Zaac Pick - Whitewater 5. Yuck - Holing Out [...]

I've been thinking a lot about the list-making process. Someone recently asked me: What is the purpose of making a list? My initial reaction - because it's fun - is actually somewhat shallow. Is it really? Yeah, probably...somewhat...maybe? But if so, still: Why? In listening to me think out loud about this, my wife commented that she doesn't make lists for fun. Why, then? "To keep myself sane. To make sure I don't forget things I need to do." In other words: To make order out of chaos. To provide structure to an unstructured world. As [...]
If it's December, then you know it's Mixmas time at You Ain't No Picasso! Each year I get a bunch of my favorite bands to contribute themed mixes and share their thoughts about each of the tracks MP3: Blitzen Trapper - Heaven and Hell I'm thrilled to have a contribution from Blitzen Trapper this year. [...]

When 2011 is said and done, there can only be one that surpasses all others. While there were 3 records that were rated perfectly this year and 2 that were as close to perfect as anyone could get, the process involved in picking the best of 2011 was as pleasurable as it was difficult. I want to personally congratulate the artists mentioned here today and thank you for your tremendous talent and dedication to your craft- You guys are the best of the best and it was pleasure talking about all of you. And you, reading at home or where-the-fuck-ever, [...]

Located in the heart of Milan, Italy, the historic Teatro Smeraldo was a cinema house before converting to performance venue some decades ago. Here it acts as the richly textured backdrop for which Portland songwriter Alela Diane , situated among the empty audience chairs, debuts the previously unreleased "Rose & Thorn." And though Diane's family band, Wild Divine, usually backs her up, this time she's going solo as part of the Milano Acoustics series. All told, it's a stunning track, and Diane's voice resonates warmly in the lush setting, filling the empty house with her soulful tones [...]

Okay, so we missed a week. But I'd be willing to bet that you were so busy scarfing down leftovers last Friday that you forgot to read anyway. In any event, we're back with a vengeance. Going through the past two weeks in mp3s has proved both fruitful and enlightening. I could bore you with a pre-Christmas speech, but let's save that for next year and get straight to the music. -Winston Robbins Senior Staff Writer

At a recent show in Milan, Italy, Alela Diane was joined onstage by a very special guest, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes. The duo performed a stripped down version of the Jackson Browne-penned, Nico-performed classic "These Days" (although it has been performed by many people including Browne himself). Diane and Pecknold seem to have a natural chemistry and the harmonies between the two are pitch perfect. Check out a video of the performance below.

Watch the two indie -folk singers perform the Jackson Browne classic in Milan.
When they stopped by Rough Trade's office in London recently , Alela Diane and husband/guitarist Tom Bevitori found themselves in the basement performing an impromptu version of the appropriately titled "Long Way Down." (You see, basement? Long way down?... Oh, forget it.) The song is a highlight of their recent album Alela Diane & Wild Divine , with Bevitori singing co-lead through the entire thing. This fine stripped-down version is the second installment of Rough Trade's Basement Tapes series. Diane, Bevitori and the Wild Divine band are currently wrapping up a European tour opening for [...]

I guess it's latest fad with music videos nowadays. Bon Iver used a kid in his last video and now Alela Diane's new video for "the Wind" has a young girl portraying a young Alela Diane as they gallivant on a welcoming road-trip in self-discovery in a vintage Benz. Alela Diane & Wild Divine are currently on the road supporting Fleet Foxes overseas and upon further review, I initially enjoyed Diane's over the spring when the title was first released. Revisiting the album with nearly one foot of snow outside is making the album [...]
