ALELA DIANE, VIKESH KAPOOR, BARNA HOWARD ( Portland Playhouse , 602 NE Prescott) Churches are an entirely appropriate place to experience the tears-inducing loveliness of Alela Diane's ever-so-slightly-trance folk, replete with poignant lyrics about family, nature, and lovers. Portland Playhouse is perhaps one of this fair cities more charming venues. Seating only 150 people, this church turned playhouse is intimate and striking and on May 19th Alela Diane , Vikesh Kapoor , and Barna Howard will be pouring out their own unique and heartfelt stories through song in a way that will also fall into the intimate and striking category. Alela Diane will surely stun that evening, with that haunting voice that sings to loss and regret eloquently and honestly. Kapoor and Barna share Dianes gift with lyrics, each one unique, each one [...]
We already heard a new Typhoon song this morning, but there's much more Music Monday! Cold Hearted Town by The Taxpayers Local DIY punk-folk-goof-etc. band the Taxpayers have a new album on the way titled Cold Hearted Town , and and here's the opening title track, in two parts: "Cold Hearted Town Pt 1" and "Cold Hearted Town Pt 2." A rollicking, seasick-drunk jaunt with ragtime overtones, the two-parter is lively, dark, and immediately gripping—"Pt 2" in particular is really outstanding. The album comes out June 15 on CD [...]

Alela Diane - About Farewell Extrait de About Farewell (sortie le 24 juin)
In March , I posted Alela Diane 's new song "The Way We Fall," and now there's some more information about the album it comes from, the upcoming About Farewell . The album, Diane's fourth, will be self-released on June 25 on Diane's new label Rusted Blue Records. (They are in the phone book just above Rusted Root Records, who I know you call all the time .) The album was begun in late 2011 and the first part of 2012 at Flora Recording Studios with John Askew, with guest musicians Heather Woods Broderick, Holcombe Waller, and [...]

Last week, we kicked off our exploration of this year's new and impending tribute albums with feature-length posts on John Denver and The Everly Brothers, both of whom are enjoying strong homage in 2013. Today we continue our series, moving on to tributes to Nick Drake and Tim Hardin, a pair of artists who lived in the shadows and died young, leaving legacies of pain and poetics still open to interpretation. Although it sports a cutting-edge roster of both British and American indie talent, at first glance, [...]

The first new song we've heard from Alela Diane in a while, coming from what will be her new record this year entitled About Farewell . She has such a pure voice and it's certainly highlighted by the softness of this new track. Alela Diane : Site // Facebook
Alela Diane follows up her 2011 album Alela Diane & Wild Divine with promise of a new LP, titled About Farewell , which is set hit record shelves at some point later this year. The first cut from the album, “The Way We Fall”, is a melancholic introduction to Alela’s forthcoming LP that sees the Portland based folk singer lamenting about lost love over haunting guitar swells. As the song fades to a gentle close, the emotional turbulence of the first half of “The Way We Fall” slips into a delicate [...]

“Folk music” can sometimes be used as a pejorative, being that it is probably the genre of music which has most aggressively resisted substantial change. It is also - by virtue of having been derived from the music of ordinary “folk” - not often seen as particularly innovative. But Alela Diane manages to take some pretty rootsy and even country-tinged folk music and put it into the context of modern guitar acts like Torres or Mount Moriah’s Jenk Miller. “The Way We Fall” is a soulfully-inclined piece of delicious pseudo-folk indulgence, with is an enormous turn a few minutes into [...]

Who said the art of storytelling is dead? Slick Rick may have put down the mic, but "The Way We Fall" proves otherwise. I'm not going to front, I have never heard of Alela Diane until about five minutes ago, but I couldn't get past this entirely melancholy yet compelling song. So take a listen, broaden your horizons a bit, and enjoy this especially serene and emotionally exhausting record. Alela Diane- The Way We Fall The post Alela Diane- The Way We Fall [...]

Although I don’t normally find myself pining for a great breakup album, Alela Diane’s About Farewell has quickly become one of my most anticipated albums of the year. After watching her perform at a rather intimate club here in Portland over a year ago, where she now resides, it was clear that Diane was on to a mature, gut-wrenching record. But for however heartbreaking About Farewell might actually end up being, Diane’s unshakable grace and beauty will surely pervade. On “The Way We Fall,” the first single from [...]
Today's music is happy that SXSW is over. Enjoy. : Grape St - A Date With You : Here's another band (the other is Lace Curtains ) that has come about because of Harlem going on hiatus. They make some seriously catchy stuff and have quickly become an act to know around Austin. Our friends over at Austin Town Hall will release A Date With You tomorrow. : Radical Dads - Mountain Town : This act put out an easy to like indie rock album titled [...]

Alela Diane returns with a new album About Farewell and the first taste is this absolutely stunning track The Way We Fall . It is a wistful, haunting lament for lost love, and softly and sorrowfully rakes over past memories in a way that makes the heartbreak as poignant and as real as anything we've heard for a long time. Have a listen. Follow @madmackerel
