Today is September the 11th. 10 years ago, a bunch of small-minded and sexually inadequate sociopaths decided to attack this country and killed a lot innocent people inspired by their backwards religious ideals. This is pretty much the mutually accepted opinion of everyone reading this. BUT what isn't agreed upon is what happened at the ceremony in New York city this morning... James Taylor performed his song Close Your Eyes on his acoustic guitar for the crowd. Why? Because people are lazy and haven't paid serious attention to singer/songwriters for the last 30 years. Thus, if [...]

Alela Diane grew up in Nevada City, CA singing with her musician parents and performing in the school choir. She taught herself guitar, and began writing songs which blend tense, trance-like arpeggios with warm vocals and meditative lyrics about family and nature. Andy's background in music is already impressive, working in many genres and remixing under various different pseudonyms for some of the biggest names in music. He is also co owner of breaks record label Control Breaks that has helped to discover and nurture some very distinguished names in the world of breaks. James has been a DJ for over 10 years and worked within [...]
Eighteen venues, four days, and a whole earful of great of music make up this year's MusicFestNW.

When I originally wrote about Alela's new album , Alela Diane & Wild Divine , I lamented the fact that, while being a good album, it was just too produced for my liking. At the time I said that, " I loved the sparse, vacant nature of Diane's other albums. I loved hearing her sing through that vacancy and, save for the occasional moment, Alela Diane & Wild Divine just doesn't have that. " Time hasn't softened that stance, but it has brought this little bonus disc to light. From what I can tell, you can't get these [...]

I am trying to keep rocking and rolling for you. Here is the latest episode that will hopefully be on the air by the end of the week. This episode is definitely for the more emotional viewers out there. I didn't really plan on that; I just laid it on the timeline, and realized it was going to be a somewhat moody show. I am shooting an interview tonight, and I have a few planned for later this month. So, I will have some interviews heading your way in some upcoming episodes. [...]

Recently, Björk decided to let us all in on one of the many secrets she has concerning her new album, Biophilia . What is Biophilia , you ask? Well Björk has described it as not just an album, but also an iPad app, a live performance and also a new website. Björk has always been a revolutionary concerning her music and never shies away from experimentation in the least. To me, this is a large part of her appeal. Now shes about to experiment much more with this project and really take things to the next level. [...]

Your mighty good midweek show options: ► Last month we updated you on the exploits of the Parson Red Heads , the Oregon-bred folkies who were beloved locally for the five years they spent in L.A. and last year relocated to Portland. Their new album "Yearling" — their best work yet — is coming Aug. 16 on Arena Rock Recording Co., and tonight they visit the Echo, joined by Alela Diane [see yesterday's post ] and Yukon Blonde , ► Norwegian singer-songwriter Sondre [...]

Alela Diane has been known to have an old soul. The Portland, Ore.-based singer-songwriter's maturity has mirrored the wisdom of Vashti Bunyan while rivaling the appeal of today's popular country music on her last two releases. However, her influences from her two musician parents and origins in northern California come through clearer than ever on her latest album, "Alela Diane & Wild Divine." Handing her guitar off to a group of musicians (which includes her father and husband) to focus on vocal experimentation has allowed Diane to shed her former "freak-folk" vibe and yield a crisp Laurel Canyon sound.
