California-born Alela Diane now resides in the folk heartlands of Portland, OR and is sometimes compared to (and has suffered by comparison to) Joanna Newsom. Newsom acted as a bit of a mentor to Diane when she took her first steps as a solo performer. She has toured the US and Europe largely solo but also with Tom Brosseau. Following two self-released albums early in her career, Alela Diane's exposure increased over the past two or three years and her February 2009 record, [...]

Live: Blitzen Trapper and friends at The Woods, 5.05.10 It was a casual affair as evidenced by Blitzen Trapper frontman Eric Earley 's casual attire-beige shirt, and faded black jeans tucked into the tongues of a pair of old-school, white (and rather clean) Converse. More A-List party than rock show, Blitzen Trapper celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a low-key bash at the cozy confines of Portland's funeral-parlor-turned-music venue The Woods. Wednesday night's not-so-secret, secret show had the band in loose, fine form. And seeing the Trappers again-especially [...]
After leaving Nashville behind, a situation that proved hostile to her creativity, and emerging in Brooklyn, Sharon and her guitar have since found an enviroment much more conducive to her artistic expression. Last year's album, Because I Was in Love features some of the most painfully beautiful folk tunes I've heard in some time. Sparse arrangements and haunting vocals place her in the company of songwriters like Alela Diane, Marissa Nadler and Diane Cluck. These beautiful folk songs address you directly with thoroughly engaging melodies that just suck you in. Last year, [...]

[mp3] Blitzen Trapper: "Heaven and Earth" Blitzen Trapper's Furr was one of the best albums of '08, and yesterday we got a taste of their new album Destroyer of the Void which comes out June 8th on Sub Pop. Blitzen Trapper is largely the brainchild of lead singer Eric Earley, but has always occupied two songwriting worlds; with one half channeling a psyched-out rock version of Americana, and the other a softer more backwoods style of folk. Sometimes, this dichotomy succeeds, while at others leads to inconsistent output. From [...]

Tomorrow is International Women's Day 2010. It is, according to the event's website , "a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future". The day has been celebrated for over a hundred years and is actually a public holiday in many countries, including China, Russia, Bulgaria and Vietnam. It's not a holiday in Ireland but there are a lot of events taking place to celebrate the day, which you can read about here . The University of Limerick is hosting an International Women's Day Conference entitled "Women & Recession: [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Brendan Benson and Will Oldham, aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy , could barely say "mama" when Graham Nash released his critically-acclaimed solo album, 'Songs for Beginners.' Fleet Foxes ' Robin Pecknold wasn't even born yet, neither was Nash's own daughter Nile. All four, along with a bunch of other musicians, appear on the new 11-track 'A Tribute to Graham Nash's Songs for Beginners,' out May 25 on Grassroots Records. "I wasn't ever a [...]

A friend of mine has been having a hard time lately getting to sleep. I first offered to help her by calling every night before bedtime and talking to her for awhile, as my affection-less monotone can put anyone to sleep within a couple minutes. After mutually deeming that to be a stupid idea, I went with my second option: a mix CD of quiet (but not boring) songs from my favorite bands. Here's what I came up with: 1) Micah P. Hinson - Seems Almost Impossible 2) Tindersticks - Until The [...]
2009 — what a crapsuck of a year. Without overstating or getting into it, it was easily the worst since, well, high school at least and I am not sorry that it is over. If I ever needed an object lesson in saving power of music, this was it. Music was one of the few things that keep the year from being a complete personal disaster. I've read others claim that 2009 wasn't a great year for music. In one sense I agree: there were few great albums — albums good enough to be considered for regular rotation [...]
As I see the written words "Best of 2009," I have a gut reaction to dismiss the very idea as an oxymoron. Like when someone who would rather not be awake responds with "What's good about it?" when greeted by "Good morning." As writer Marc Kevin Hall recently observed , 2009 can be summed up by one word: loss. This was certainly true for me; I lost my job to the recession, and, worse, a longtime friend to death. The music community also suffered losses: Michael Jackson, Jeff Hanson, Vic Chestnutt to name a few. So far, [...]

Alela Diane, Portland Oregon based artist is here cruising in her black cab limo in a USA BCS session singing, "Lady Divine". It doesn't get sweeter or more chillaxing than this... We love Alela's voice, very unique vocals. Last year's "Best List" included her work with Headless Heroes '. Check out the BCS along with the latest release, To Be Still , via Rough Trade . [...]

Paul O'Valle Before the passing of Jay Reatard on Wednesday - condolences to his friends, family and fans - the topic du jour in the indie nation was what was up with Joanna Newsom . Everyone's favourite harpist hadn't released any new music since 2007's Joanna Newsom & The Ys Street Band EP, itself a chaser for the epic Ys , and while anyone is entitled to a break after putting something like that together, fans were certainly getting anxious for some [...]

I'm gonna keep it as short as the previous ones, just because it's already the 7th of January. I should be listening to 500 2010 records right now! I promised myself I'd provide more regular updates, maybe in a different form than I used to. Oh, and I'll finish my unknown bands from last decade list. Eventually. 20. La Strada - La Strada (EP) ( Ernest Jenning Recording Company ) What? The New [...]

I remember reading an article in Metro recently where someone actually did the sums on just how much Father Christmas would have to drink, how many miles he would have to cover and how many present he would have to carry in order to deliver presents to every little child in the world in one night (not the Muslim, Hindu or otherwise slightly dusky-skinned babies of course, because Jesus doesn't love those babies and the chapter on Father Christmas came right after the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John in the Bible as well all know - Matthew, Mark, Luke, [...]

Get it - Festive Fiddy! Oh I do crack myself up sometimes, I really do. So here endeth the Festive Fifty for this year. As anyone who has compiled this kind of list will know, the whole process is more than a little arbitrary, and were I to start from scratch tomorrow I would probably end up somewhere notably different. The interesting thing for me personally is to note how strongly the advantages and disadvantages of nepotism have made themselves known. The advantages are obvious - would there be so much Withered [...]

And the list goes on... 40. Andrew jackson Jihad - Can't Maintain ( Asian Man Recordings ) What? Folkpunk opens their bloody doors to wider horizons. Andrew Jackson Jihad have made my list before in 2007, cause back then they made a huge impression on me with their Fuck-in-your-face Folk punk. The songs were about murders, misantropy and other difficult words that we can't spell properly. This year they have [...]

I'm going to take a short break from counting down my favourite albums of the decade to reveal my ten favourite albums of 2009. I had planned to wait a few days but a lunchtime discussion at The Wild Onion earlier today with a couple of music fans prompted me to put my skates on. The conversation became heated at times with bits of omelette flying around the table as Dave tried to make a strong case for Wilco. John and I are big fans of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen (I'm a little bigger around the waist) but we [...]

36. Wild Beasts - All The King's Men The vocals are weird, but there's something about a large chunk of this record which I find absolutely compelling. I love Ben's voice, for starters, and this song probably highlights it better than any other. 37. Virgin of the Birds - Ilona, You Should Still Be My Vampire Attendant Quite apart from the weird start, this is just a song based around a single, simple, brilliant hook. So infectious I simply can't stop humming it to myself. And he's [...]
