Recommended Thursday Show: Alex Bleeker & The Freaks at Glasslands

Recommended Thursday Show: Alex Bleeker & The Freaks at Glasslands After a very busy weekend, the beginning of the week was slow. After rocking my face off at The Hold Steady on Sunday night, I was glad for a small break. Luckily, there's no shortage of shows from here on out. Thursday night has a bunch of shows you can't go wrong with, but I'm going to recommend Alex Bleeker & The Freaks at Glasslands. That's exactly the kind of summery, shimmery music that's needed on a crazy cold day like today. Another good option is Fergus & Geronimo, Easter Vomit, and PC Worship at Union Pool. All three of those [...]

Favorite Label of 2010//Underwater Peoples

Favorite Label of 2010//Underwater Peoples Yes, they killed it at CMJ, yes all the artists are polite, personable and VERY talented, but that's besides the point because you can be a total doucher and make amazing music and people will love you regardless, buy your albums, and pay an obscene amount of money to come to your shows (Kanye) I'm not a hater, love all the albums, just sayin. Music fans are very forgiving. But seriously, lets talk about the talent on this Label. Ducktails , Julien Lynch , Family Portrait , Real [...]

Recommended Wednesday Show: War on Drugs, Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, and Arc In Round at Mercury Lounge

Recommended Wednesday Show: War on Drugs, Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, and Arc In Round at Mercury Lounge I never like to pass up an opportunity to see Alex Bleeker & The Freaks. There's a bit of Real Estate soft, billowy sensibility in there, of course, but also that 70s classic rock edge that keeps the songs moving in their own way. I recently saw War on Drugs at Rock Shop, too, and I still stand by what I wrote about them then: "Their new EP has been generating some buzz online, so there was a nice crowd for a Tuesday there to see them. They're very, very good at building up an exciting background of acid/psych guitars [...]

Recommended Thursday Show: Christmas Island, Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, Big Troubles, The Babies, and Family Trees at Glasslands

Recommended Thursday Show: Christmas Island, Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, Big Troubles, The Babies, and Family Trees at Glasslands If you're not going to one of the big shows, like Pavement or LCD or one of the Merzbow shows this Thursday, you basically have two options. Glasslands or Shea Stadium. Glasslands eeked its way out as our recommended show of the day. While Shea Stadium boasts Juan Wauters, Easter Vomit, and German Measles (plus a band called the Honey Dos, with whom my old band actually played a show in DC- they were ok), Glasslands has more bang for the buck, though the territory may be more well-tread. Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, The Babies, Family Trees, and Big [...]

MP3: Flower Orgy - "Boneyard"

MP3: Flower Orgy - "Boneyard" Power Crystals Orgy Once upon a time way back when , we posted a song called "Bone Yard" by Stingray Migration, a Bennington student musical group whose members included Will Stratton (after his show with El Perro Del Mar and Taken By Trees, we dug his song "Bluebells" ) and Nate "Skippy" Luce - whose duet show with Alex Bleeker of the Freaks we posted videos of here . Cutie and a sweet, sweet soul, Luce has now formed his new project Flower Orgy. Their [...]

pill wonder//my valuable hunting knive (guided by voices cover)

pill wonder//my valuable hunting knive (guided by voices cover) Our Seattle friends from the Wild Animal Kingdom have just announced the super limited (100 copies) release of Guided by Voices covers, Guided By Guided By Voices . A 16 track compilation from some of our favorites and includes Pill Wonder 's version of the great " My Valuable Hunting Knife ". They definitely add their own subtle touches, but I'm sure that this version would bring a smile to Mr. Pollard's face. The entire tracklisting is somewhat of a mystery and the only way I see to find the answer is to [...]

The Pantry Party NYC

The Pantry Party NYC T'was about 1 year ago me and my dear friend/fellow vagabond Jeff Petriello decided we were very very bored. Yes, very bored but certainly not dull. Coming off of summer 2k9 feeling a bit directionless stewing in the stiff and stale recession we knew something had to be born in a time when it seemed most dreams and higher visions were dying. It was September of 2009 when we had the ephiphany that everyone we knew and considered our friend also happened to be incredibly talented. We decided to creatively cement our social and [...]

Motor Away

Motor Away " Motor Away " happened to be the first Guided By Voices song I ever heard. I loved it so much that I nearly wore out the totally awesome Matador comp (19972s What's Up Matador? ) that I found it on. The song actually taught me quite a bit at the time that still holds more or less true today. First, lo-fi recording techniques are not necessarily a hindrance; in fact, it can actually enhance the emotive quality of the song. Case in point: when Pollard flatly shouts "C'mon!" at the end of the second [...]

Recommended Friday Show: Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, Coasting, and The Beets at Monster Island Basement

Recommended Friday Show: Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, Coasting, and The Beets at Monster Island Basement I'm a big Alex Bleeker and The Freaks fan. They played my number one favorite set of SXSW this past year. Of course their sound is more complicated than this, but their Band-era vibe makes me so, so happy. They obviously can't sound quite like The Band, or have the same ethos- that moment in time was so very specific- but they're not playing punk and they're not playing indie rock and they live in that wonderful older-old space that I recently blogged about. It's so late and I'm babbling, but I promise Monster Island basement will be [...]

remember what brought us here

remember what brought us here Just over a month ago I posted a new track by Dead Gaze , and a review of his album End of Days, Why Not You? (check out that post here ) and at that point he didn't have any shows booked, but tomorrow night brings this Mississippi psych rocker to Brooklyn for a Group Tightener showcase at Monster Island Basement. Dead Gaze have a way of making heavy psychedelic with the song writing sensibility of a pop band. At the beginning of "Remember What [...]

NYC Summer Show Guide Part IV: July 1 – July 10

June was awesome (shows-wise, at least). Saw Titus Andronicus for the probably 300th time. Also saw Cults, Male Bonding, Ducktails, Andrew Cedermark, Dana Jewell, Big Troubles, No Demons Here, WOOM, Wild Nothing, Tonstartssbandht, and Makeout Videotape. And that was just in the past week or so. The first 10 days of July promise to be just as incredible. The highlights for this week and a half are Beach Fossils (7/1), Alex Bleeker & The Freaks (7/2, Group Tightener Record Release Show), The Hood Internet (7/2), t he Rooftop Films shows (7/2, 7/3, 7/7), [...]

Alex Bleeker and the Freaks - Animal Tracks

Alex Bleeker and the Freaks - Animal Tracks I hate that it took me this long to get into Alex Bleeker. I love this. Mountain Man also does a fantastic version of this song .

These Days

These Days I was lucky enough to spend a couple of days this week in NYC, and I made a short detour from wandering around to drop by the unbelievably well-curated Other Music . I was able to pick up a couple of cool things that I had been shopping for, including Alex Bleeker's newest 7" single "These Days." While the song was released a while ago on Underwater Peoples' winter sampler , the visual quote of Freewheelin' Bob Dylan was too good to pass up. The title track itself is a sour suburban [...]

Mountain Man Fest

Mountain Man Fest I just caught wind of a little festival Underwater Peoples is hosting in upstate New York this July called Mountain Man Fest . The lineup includes performances by D.I.D. favorites Islands , Health , Memoryhouse , Phantogram , Alex Bleeker and the Freaks , Real Estate and Summer Camp . This is one of the best lineups I've seen in years. [...]

Recommended Friday Show: Alex Bleeker & The Freaks and Big Troubles at Cake Shop

Recommended Friday Show: Alex Bleeker & The Freaks and Big Troubles at Cake Shop I'm visiting a friend in Columbus, Ohio until Saturday (what up Done Waiting!), so blogging will probably be brief until then. However, I can barely contain my love for Alex Bleeker & The Freaks. They're the best band to sound like The Band since The Band, plus it's fun to see Real Estate change up their instruments and the different results with slightly different roles. Plus, Big Troubles are a big bundle of rock and roll boyish fun. Plus, it's Cake Shop's fifth anniversary month and they're having incredible specials all night. Best place to spend this Friday evening, hands [...]

blackburn recordings present:

blackburn recordings present: Tomorrow, Friday May 7th, Blackburn Recordings will host a night at Cake Shop as part of the beloved New York City's music venue's fifth anniversary. This party will also kick off the budding relationship between Blackburn Recordings and Connecticut's masters of hazy psychedelica Sore Eros . This show will be the 73 Release party for the new Sore Ero's record on Blackburn Recordings! I was a big fan of Sore Eros' amazing full length from last year , [...]

Help an awesome Music Festival go down in NY!

Some really great bands are set to play the Mountain Man Festival in Saratoga, NY this summer, but the organizers need your help! You can donate, buy a poster, buy your ticket in advance, or sign up to host a booth. You can find the lineup and all the "pledging" options here . Help make this happen!!!!! Celebrate Your Scene Vol. 1 – New Jersey

Celebrate Your Scene Vol. 1 – New Jersey So as I mentioned earlier, I cannot say enough good things about Titus Andronicus . So I will take this post to say as much good stuff about them and the rest of the current New Jersey music scene, sorry Bon Jovi fan(s) , as reasonably tolerable. To demonstrate my true admiration for the music of my home state, I created this compilation to serve as an introduction to the great music coming out of New Jersey (mostly Bergen County, the county in which I reside). We have an ongoing series of mixtapes featuring music from Canada called [...]
