Alex Bleeker and the Freaks - Spring Jam It's hard to ignore the fact that this screams Spring nights. I'll even go as far to say it'll fit those Summer night hangout sessions. It hits those moods I get in where I just wanna listen to scuzzy jams, without words, just invoking feelings of nostalgia. This comes from the stellar self-titled album released Nov 2009. If you haven't picked up the album yet, I suggest you do so thru Underwater Peoples [not my label] previously Animal [...]

Dreamy. Chillwave. Sun. Sand. Sea. There's a series of fairly self-explanatory go-to words and images conjured by Real Estate and routinely used to describe their effortlessly laid-back sound. For that reason, I shall attempt to avoid using them. Following up their sunkissed self-titled debut, Real Estate's Days continues in the same leisurely fashion , sophomore slumping its way through a dreamy chillwave landscape of sun, sand and... goddamnit. Rather than demanding attention, the New Jersey outfit's oeuvre tends to meander in the background: [...]

Their sophomore record Days is out and about , occupying prized positions in many a record store just as it'll quite rightly do on several end of year lists. The newly-released vid to It's Real (below) reveals their startling affection for creatures of the canine variety, while simultaneously solidifying their penchant for thrift store threads. We fired some questions at bewhiskered bassist Alex Bleeker of Jersey boys Real Estate . Speaking seasons, shacking up in Brooklyn, and singles carefully constructed in a boardroom (not) here's what came hurtling its way back out of the obscurity of the internet... [...]

On Days (Domino), the formerly-New Jersey now Brooklyn-based indie band Real Estate is making its second full-length go-round. A mellow, wandering five- A.M.-and-no-one-else-is-up-yet sound characterizes their style. The soothing strumming of "Green Aisles" might make a listener feel like a cat lying in a patch of sunshine, drowsing peacefully with pleasantly sun-warmed fur. "Wonder Years" is an ironically titled song about painful love memories, casually maudlin with a bit of bitterness for spice: "I'm not yours and you're not mine/ I'm not ok but I guess I'm doing fine." "Younger Than Yesterday" is pretty, lovely brainscaping music, something Real [...]

Instores, now something of an almost exclusively American phenomenon (a brief peruse of the Amoeba Music calendar at any point, ever, is enough to fill even the most blasé music devotee with envy), seem to animate the fanatic adolescent within every attendee and last night in Rough Trade East was no exception to such a trend. Thus hearing Municipality wafting out from beyond the shop's glass doors, sounding distinctly different than on record and not quite right, is an enthusiast's delight. Real Estate are soundchecking, and also run through the truly impeccable summertime sloop of Out [...]

"Black Wizard" is six-and-a-half minutes of ramshackle freak rock from Brooklyn's Flower Orgy , who have the particularity of consisting of three females and one male, and of residing in Brooklyn's peninsular Red Hook neighborhood, which is actually shaped like a hook. Full of gristled licks, co-ed vocal harmonies, and surprise chord changes, this Alex Bleeker -recorded guitar stomper could easily be a lost New England fire pit jam between the defunct Vermont psych-folk collective Feathers and the Magik Markers at their most unhinged . Especially like the half-screamed, half-sung "I don't know what [...]

With temperatures rising and the sun shining on a semi-regular basis it definitely appears to be time to pack away winter-y synths and bust out the loud guitar jams again. Enter Brooklyn's Flower Orgy who sent us a few demos from their upcoming, Alex Bleeker-produced EP. Unlike the folkier sounds of the band's recent Curatorial Club release, here Flower Orgy guide listeners on a garage rock journey chock full of everything that will always be pure and good about this kind of music. On "Mama Earth" the band immediately bring the noise with a flurry [...]

Alex Bleeker stopped by Chocolate Bobka 's "Sunday Brunch" program on Newtown Radio a few weeks ago, and Ray Concepcion was there to capture the performance. The clip includes his cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" along with a few other impromptu cuts. If you haven't checked out Newtown Radio yet I highly suggest doing so, I guarantee you'll run into some great hosts and rare tracks. Sunday Brunch: Alex Bleeker from Ray Concepcion on Vimeo .

Fader recently premiered an MP3 from Alex Bleeker & Evan Brody titled "Motor Away". Incase you didn't know, Alex Bleeker is the bassist of Ridgewood's Real Estate. Be sure you check out Alex's debut solo work here . If Guided by Voices' "Motor Away" was the '70s GTO of lo-fi driving metaphors, then Alex Bleeker & Evan Brody's equally scrappy cover is a tandem bicycle. Or maybe a razor scooter? Recorded for an upcoming GBV cover album called Guided by Guided by Voices (cute), the duo translates all of Bob Pollard's brolic [...]

In the past year or so, Alex Bleeker and Bleeker-related projects have probably gotten more play on my computer than anything else. Between his amazing debut album Alex Bleeker & The Freaks , various Real Estate releases, his Curation Club tape and other random collaborations, this man has been soundtracking my life for quite some time. So when his new track with Evan Brody of Family Portrait debuted yesterday I was understandably excited. "Motor Away" is a cover of the classic Guided by Voices track, re-skinned with Bleeker's falsetto and complimented with the [...]

I'm a big Alex Bleeker and The Freaks fan. They played my number one favorite set of SXSW this past year. Of course their sound is more complicated than this, but their Band-era vibe makes me so, so happy. They obviously can't sound quite like The Band, or have the same ethos- that moment in time was so very specific- but they're not playing punk and they're not playing indie rock and they live in that wonderful older-old space that I recently blogged about. It's so late and I'm babbling, but I promise Monster Island basement will be [...]

Tomorrow, Friday May 7th, Blackburn Recordings will host a night at Cake Shop as part of the beloved New York City's music venue's fifth anniversary. This party will also kick off the budding relationship between Blackburn Recordings and Connecticut's masters of hazy psychedelica Sore Eros . This show will be the 73 Release party for the new Sore Ero's record on Blackburn Recordings! I was a big fan of Sore Eros' amazing full length from last year , [...]

Illustration by Mike Well, what can I say??? Saturday was epic in more ways than one! First off, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! With your help & your legs, on a windy day with impending rain, on a holiday weekend filled with egg hunts, church services, and men dressed up as bunnies, we were able to raise... $610 for breast cancer research!!!! Personally, I think that's fantastic! Thank you so much to everyone who took the time, took their bikes, and showed up to my super SUPER no-frills charity [...]

I keep trying to find a moral in SXSW. The point is to be in a band, and the rest of us are just plebeian followers. Go home and practice your instrument until you can do it yourself. Go home and practice your writing until you become a better critic. Go home and give up because there's already so very many other people trying to do what you're trying to do. When it comes down to it, though, I think the fact that SXSW drives home above all is that good music is good. When you're seeing a band that [...]
