Released last month, Free Again: The 1970 Sessions highlights a fertile, if transient, period in Alex Chilton's life and career. As the the decade began the twenty year old Chilton found himself at a crossroads. Having already achieved preternatural pop success as a teen with the blue-eyed soul of the Box Tops (and a year [...]
On his 10th studio album, Temple Beautiful (Yep Roc), Chuck Prophet found his muse in the city he's called home for 30 years. Exploring the local landmarks and myths with friend and poet klipschutz, Prophet winds his way through San Francisco, stretching tales even taller along the way. But this guided tour isn't a detailed and prefabricated [...]
Dylan Baldi's Cloud Nothings get it together on Attack on Memory . As the first month of 2012 nears its close, we have our very first year-end contender with the sophomore release from Cloud Nothings. Steve Albini's production combined with Dylan Baldi surrounding himself with a full band makes for a giant leap from his debut. Besides that, there are noteworthy releases from The Hold Steady's Craig Finn stepping out solo, The Darcys taking on a Steely Dan classic album, Sweden's First Aid Kit, the return of baroque pop legends Cardinal (Richard [...]
The 'Classic' lineup of Guided By Voices returns with the first of two releases for 2012. 2012 continues to be slow, with only the excellent return of Guided By Voices to show for this week. Looking back through my archives, by this time last year we'd already had several albums of note, including Wire, Smith Westerns, British Sea Power and the debut from Tennis. Other releases of note include the latest from Kathleen Edwards, The Big Pink, Frankie Rose and Herman Dune. Playlist: New Releases 01.17.12 [...]
One thing that instantly resonates about Alex Chilton 's latest release is the fact that these "sessions" are from a hazy, important moment after Chilton's somewhat straitjacketed Box Tops days and helped fuel the creative wonder to be found in his later Big Star work. Featuring six previously unreleased songs as well as the 12 track LP that constituted the now out of print Rhino-released 1970 , it's a window into a particularly interesting point in Chilton's life, tellingly explained in the lyrics of the swaying "Free Again": "I'm free again to sing my songs again, free again [...]
Alex Chilton takes a break during the legendary "1970" sessions recorded in 1969. So far, 2012 has proven to be a slow starter on the music front, with no one wanting to jump in while folks are still debating each others' year end lists. One gem coming out in odd fashion is a reissue of Alex Chilton's "1970" Sessions that he recorded in 1969 (hence the "" -- explained below). This release from Ominivore Recordings is odd in that it skipped out on the big box set/reissue gift giving season of late [...]

Medium Cool featuring Alex Chilton : Like Someone In Love [ purchase ] When I think of Alex Chilton, I think of at least half a dozen different voices. There's the horny teenaged, weary beyond its years, husky voice of the Box Tops' "The Letter." In the famous Big Star years there was the vulnerable, love-struck voice of "I'm In Love With A Girl," the joyous, giddy voice of "September Gurls," and the burned out, utterly despairing voice of "Holocaust." In his early solo years there was the sleazoid, sex tour [...]

Alex Chilton - The EMI Song (Smile For Me)
"In the latter months of 1969, somewhere between the moon landing and the start of the Vietnam draft, the concerts at Woodstock and Altamont, Alex Chilton decided to take back his life. During that annus mirabilis, while the world experienced a generationally sparked social, political, and cultural upheaval, the 18-year-old Chilton was in the midst of a revolution of his own." "For the past year, Chilton had been strapped in a creative, professional, and personal straitjacket. He was the lead singer of a million-selling band, The Box Tops, but [...]
Award-winning Irish documentary photographer Seamus Murphy created stunning short films for each song on PJ Harvey's eighth studio album, Let England Shake. They have now been compiled on a limited-edition DVD that will be released January 31 via Vagrant/Island ... Sean Lennon composed the 22-track score for the upcoming film from writer/director Jordan Galland, Alter Egos. It [...]

The late Alex Chilton became an indie rock icon as the frontman for The Box Tops and Big Star. Between his time with those two acts, however, the songwriter spent some time in the studio recording solo material for the first time. Now, Omnivore Recordings has collected those songs for a new compilation titled Free Again: The "1970" Sessions . The CD and digital versions of the set compile 20 songs, six of which have never seen release. The vinyl edition collects 12 songs over two LPs, with one track being previously unreleased. Stream [...]

I've been on a Big Star kick all week, thanks to the trailer for Nothing Can Hurt Me , a new documentary about the band's "massive critical acclaim, dismal commercial failure," and enduring legacy as "pop music's greatest cult phenomenon." The movie's tagline sums it up: I never heard Big Star on the radio, or even at a record shop. I listened to Big Star because other band's told me to via cover songs and tributes. My introduction to Alex Chilton first came through Elliott Smith's hushed cover of "Thirteen" (there are countless takes on [...]
"The film is a unique portrait of an incredibly talented group of musicians who crafted three albums now considered pop masterpieces (all of which charted on Rolling Stone's [...]

A few months after Alex Chilton's passing in May 2011, the remaining members of Big Star (Jody Stephens, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow) played a tribute show in Memphis at the Levitt Shell . The entire show was recorded, and may eventually see release, but for now, a terrific three-song EP featuring John Davis has made the leap from its initial vinyl release to the digital domain. You can hear it below, and buy it as part of a Big Star bundle at Ardent's on-line store .
