Alexa Woodward plays the banjo. Which automatically gets her labeled as some type of Appalachian throwback. But her music is too layered, eclectic, and cerebral to be categorized as old timey folk of that particular variety. For instance on a number of songs from her new record It's A Good Life... you'll hear cello, odd percussion, and deep rich bass. However, thematically the songs do tend to lend themselves to a more folkish bent. For example allusions to nature, spirits, and loneliness abound on the song "Darkest Days". [...]

day two of my little series of YNM management artists brings us to alexa woodward (and her banjo). her appalachian-influenced americana tunes have a certain haunting characteristic, and i can almost picture myself sitting on some breezy front porch in west virginia listening to her 2009 release, speck . a good one-word summary would be "melancholy". the gal and her banjo really draw you in, with striking harmonies and various folksy instruments guiding you along the way. if that wasn't enough, her songwriting skills are nothing short of fantastic. the album is an overall great listen, and [...]

There's double bill coming to Toronto that should appeal to anyone who likes mature roots songwriting and great voices. On November 20th Toronto resident Annie Crane and NYC's Alexa Woodward pull in to play The Cameron House. To get you in the mood, I've got a video from each artist. Check out Crane's twangy "Pennsylvania": ...and Woodward's "Darkest Days": Annie Crane's Myspace Alexa

Many of Alexa Woodward's banjo-driven folk songs slowly slink like fog down from the Appalachian mountains and hills of Virgina and wrap your soul in melancholy. Woodward's 2009 release, Speck , is full of subtle textures and well-matched harmonies that support interesting and well-written narratives. Eleanor , a new track not included on Speck , is just a wee-bit more pop-friendly than what we've heard previously from Woodward. Alexa will perform at [...]

eremy•JIrvin, who you may know as Jeremy Irvin of Second Story Man has branched out on his solo endeavor , in a not so solitary manner. Ultimately eremy•JIrvin's vision rings true to the origin of organic folk music, music for and by the people. At November 23rd's performance at [...]

Here are some of the better tracks that have made our ears sit up and take notice this week. The Warlocks have long been a favourite of ours, and although we equally like the Black Angels, these guys appear to be mining from a similar seam of reverb drenched, heavy rock psychedelia without anything like the same level of recognition. Hopefully that will change with their latest album Mirror
Alexa Woodward is leaving her career in law for the banjo. She's taking it all on the road too. For the next three months, Alexa will be touring through the US in a 1984 VW bus in support of her new album, Speck. The Speck Tour will take Alexa across the United States between May and [...]
