Sounds of 2011 features many of the top songs and artists we've written about this year. We can never fit in all the ones we would have liked to, but Crimson and I took on the daunting task of summarizing a year of exceptional music and discovery. I've been mad busy this week, so I'm only now getting around to posting up the highlights of my sets on Friday and Saturday. GIGANTIC turned out to be another really fun night. Considering how much was on, and the fact that it is still the summer, it was great to see a such a big bunch of regulars down getting their dance on. It was another one of those occasions where one random request changes the course of the set hugely. I got asked to play Jeff Mills 'The Bells' again, and I was only too happy [...]

A year after lighting up the R&B airwaves with her cool put-down to too-fresh first dates on the funk-tastic "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" , '802s soul sensation Cherelle proved that her chart-scaling chemistry with Prince associates/ future production juggernauts Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis was no one-time fluke when she unleashed the even bigger smash "Saturday Love" in 1985, a midtempo couples roller skate jam that pleasantly juxtaposed her wispy coos with labelmate's Alexander O'Neal over-sized chops to create one of the most beloved R&B duets of the era. Over two decades [...]
Not one to rest on his laurels, Chaz Bundick, aka Toro y Moi, is set to release the follow up to the stellar Underneath The Pine album. The release will come in the form of a five tracks recorded by Chaz over the past month and bundled into an EP entitled Freaking Out - tracklisting and artwork below. Alexander O'Neal A Broken Heart Can Mend Change Glow of Love Utada Hikaru Addicted To You (Up In Heaven Mix) The Change song features Luther Vandross on vocals, sampled by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis for Janet Jackson's All For You. Both O'Neal and Hikaru's songs were produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
Not a mixtape tho... I was again today hosting a day at the local DJ workshop... Big fun, talented kids (better step my game up) and many great songs. We also watched the documentary called 'Maestro' that's about Larry Levan and people and places associated with Paradise Garage and The Loft... It always brings me good feelings. Reminded me of this song, was this a gay hit? Hope so, it's a Frankie Knuckles remix version. MP3 Alexander O'Neal - All True Man (Big House Mix) (320K) (ge.tt)
When you want a creation done right, then there is only one man you can turn to. No, it's not Superman or the The Green Lantern, but Mr. Grant Nelson - him very self. Oh, how these remixes give me those random goosebumps whilst writing this review. It's a magical feeling! (And's there's no windy drafts either!) So to conclude my friends, that's how you mould a perfectly housey and loved-filled remix to the core. Totally, totally garagey and blinding-fully houseful. It's Saturday Night Delight euphoric! Criticize by Maxxi Soundsystem Can't get enough of Brighton's Maxxi Soundsystem remix/edit of former SOS Band member Alexander O Neal's 1987 classic "Criticize". Taken from Maxxi Soundsystem's, Sam Watts and Neal Lewis, debut 12" (Criticize/His Hat Was His Home), out now on Kojak Giant Sounds. This is what we call perfection! Buy here .
The homie I,Ced blesses our ears with a collection of music that shapes him & moves us all. A brilliant audio journey into this new decade with songs from even more homies, Haz Solo & Seven Davis Jr. In his words... This is my first mix for the website and for the new year. Just creating a new situation. With that CED… Here is some music that I have been listening to and sharing it with [...]
As the mid-1980s turned into the late-'80s, the Quiet Storm sound, invented by Smokey Robimnson and perfected by Luther Vandross, became the genre's standard. When it was good, it really was good. People like Freddy Jackson, Anita Baker and Jeffrey Osborne were turning out some great music of that type (perhaps even the best); but when Michael Fucking Bolton started to muscle in on it, and Peabo Bryson sang MFB covers, Quiet Storm had to go (even if it had to be replaced by New Jack Swing and the soul-free wailers Boyz II Men). In any case, this mix represents [...]
This mix should persuade those who believe that soul music was dying by the mid-1980s of their error. There is much that's great on this mix, and among tracks that did not make the cut. Some of the songs are surprising. Cameo are more usually associated with funk and camp codpieces, not deep soul music as this duet between Larry Blackmon and Barbara Mitchell of Hi Inergy (who featured on Any Major Soul 1976-77 ). Denise LaSalle , during the time covered by this mix, had a hit with the awful Don't Mess With [...]

Alexander O'Neal and Cherrelle get indie rock chillwave love from Toro Y Moi
No doubt you're all excited about a new Toro Y Moi EP and the cover he does of the 1985 classic "Saturday Love" by Alexander O'Neal and Cherrelle. If anything, Toro Y Moi gets points for introducing music fans of a new era to the music of O'Neal and Cherrelle. That said, the cover is pretty limp and captures very little if any of the O'Neal's Minneapolis R&B/soul punch. And speaking of Cherrelle, make sure you check out the video for her biggest tune, "I Didn't Mean To [...]

What's The Deal With This Year's Outside Lands Line-up?
You may remember my little rant last year about Outside Land's ridiculous choices for their 2009 line-up . This year I am no longer angry at their choice of bands; this time I'm more...confused. It's quite obvious that Outside Lands is lacking on budget and local support. The once three day long juggernaut that boosted acts like Radiohead, Tom Petty, Dave Matthews , and Pearl Jam has now become a fraction of festivals like Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Sasquatch. It was once a worthy opponent, but now I'm not so sure. Lets start with the headliners; [...]
