Look Mexico released a new album today, To Bed to Battle . And not only did the band allow Buzzgrinder to stream the whole thing , but the guys were also kind enough to take over posting duties for the day. That means we get to continue recovering from SXSW while they have to work. On this tour we've run into our friends from the Philly band Hop Along more than a few times so we decided [...]
A fresh decade is upon us. Time to hang up those ugly christmas sweaters, take your pants off and party the *expletive* out. Here's a little [not complete] guide to Philly events where you can choose to let loose, make some last minute [laughable] mistakes or just feel great about the past 365 days. Be sure to keep your friends close, be safe and love life. DEC 31st: MOS DEF @ The Troc [ get tix ] THE 7th Annual R5/MAKING [...]

mp3: Algernon Cadwallader - Fun Philly favorites Algernon Cadwallader are set to release their oh-so-long awaited EP/7" and follow up to 2008's superb Some Kind Of Cadwallader next month. They draw obvious comparisons to the Chicago-era bands such as Cap n' Jazz and American Football but that's hardly a fault of the band. Keeping in the tradition of those fallen groups they write nothing but windows rolled down sing(yell)-a-longs overflowing with energy, noodly guitar work and some ballsy percussion. In a word they are, well… fun. [...]

During one of my many visits to South Philly on Wednesday night, a good friend of mine told me about this band called Algernon Cadwallader [Al-jur-non Kad-wall-uh-der]. At first, I totally forgot what the name was and didn't even want to try to pronounce it. He gave me some backstory about the band and how they used to only play basement shows in the Philly area. I thought that was pretty rad. He kind of described what they sounded like. I still couldn't pronounce the name. Then he put them on the stereo and I feel in love. I was [...]
>> Be Happy Records has reissued the debut "demo" 7" from Philly-based emo superlatives Algernon Cadwallader , and so we are finally initiating coverage of the act with an emphatic "buy" rating. A 2008 re-pressing of the release, originally issued in 2006, sold out briskly. The disc includes four tracks, "Second Rate Machines," "Breath Wish," "Look Down..." and "Sailor Set Sell." Those unfamiliar with the act(which in the excellent video clip above is a four-piece, but at its MySpace lists itself as a trio?) will be surprised to learn it sounds very convincingly like the fabled Kinsella-led second-wave emo [...]

Everyone else is doing it so why shouldn't I? That's right, listmania 2008 is finally here and what I've got to present to you here is the first half of my favorite albums of the year. Love 'em or hate 'em, these are the albums that made the cut. I decided to stick with a list of 50 this year mainly because that's what I've done in the past and also because 2008 was a really great year for new music and narrowing down the list to fewer than this just seemed unfair. [...]

sup, fools? in case you missed it, mr largeheartedboy is in the process of compiling what is already an exhaustive list of "best of's" from around the blogoweird. check it here. i'm gonna come right out and say it, west philly's algernon cadwallader's copping of tim kinsella and his cap n' jazz is almost embarrasing. even with that said, i really dig em. sure, the world only needs one tim kinsella, but maybe the world needs another cap' n jazz? considering their short life, me thinks a rejuvination of the cap'n jazz sound [...]
P hiladelphia's Algernon Cadwallader is one of a handful of new bands that is churning out tunes that are almost certainly inspired by the "classic" Midwestern emo sounds of the early 90's. You know exactly what I mean. Twinkling guitar lines dance around intricate rhythms while impassioned screams and singing punctuate the in-between in true Kinsella fashion. The few songs from Algernon Cadwallader I've heard are outstanding. They are refreshing and despite falling squarely in line with the output of Cap n' Jazz and American Football from over ten years ago this isn't a [...]

As promised, a little something for the weekend. These tracks have consumed me...I know they'll do the same to you. Enjoy. MP3: Union of Knives Opposite Direction Beautiful harmonies, deep beats. I'm expecting a lot from this Scottish group, and this track is the reason why. MP3: Algernon Cadwallader Second-Rate Machines (Demo) These obscure emokids hail straight from the East Coast, which I seriously wouldn't [...]
