A different and pleasantly nice mix from Onra for the Oki-ni series. He's opted to put together a collection of Jazz songs, though not done as a mix, as in one continuous mix, it is a nice break from the usual stuff you hear. Tracklisting: Black Classical Rap Rahsaan Roland Kirk Morning Worship Alice Coltran [...]
This music wants to crack you wide open, make no mistake, but not to root around in the wound. Instead, it breaks you of ideas of structure, of order, and gets down into feeling. "I am looking for a universal sound." -- John Coltrane It may seem unfair at first to mention John Coltrane -- Alice's beyond-famous husband -- when talking about her music, but listening to Alice Coltrane, you get the impression you can't mention her without talking about John. In an interview with Alice Coltrane -- originally from the September 1968 issue of Jazz and Pop magazine, [...]

Austin quartet White Denim will release D, their fifth studio album on May 24. That same night, they'll play San Diego's Casbah, and it'll be worth your while to check it out. The experimental indie band has been compared to the Minutemen and Randy Newman (yes, both), and is known for infusing anything from punk [...] Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

Sorry Jeld-Wen Field . But, there's a small yellow building north of the Alberta Arts District, a building once known as the Wail and Rererato in years past, and which still bears the Hare Krishna Temple sign from even earlier, that's finally back for more. Still a center for experimental and improvisational art, the sonic bending space is under an awesome new name, The Alice Coltrane Memorial Coliseum, and will open April 10th at 8pm with a show to mark the start of a new chapter in the always eventful history of 5135 NE 42nd St. [...]

This record (her fourth solo LP and maybe the best) seems to be getting more and more geek love as the years go by, and as more and more people are realising Alice should in no way be completely in John's shadow. It's got the ever mighty Pharoah Sanders pushing out some of his best work alongside her, plus it's very accessible whilst also being a real revelation to people who aren't really into this sort of thing. Totally a gateway record. Oh and of course Caribou sampled it on last year's exceptional Swim. Sweet cover too. [...]

Contemporary American jazz man Jose James is back in the saddle once again, making music that may or may not feature on the followup to his last LP, the rather lovely Blackmagic. One of that album's standout tunes was a little number by the name of 'Code' , produced by Flying Lotus. Now, in the hope that lightening can indeed strike twice, JJ and Fly-Lo have linked in an attempt to make some more sweet, sweet music. The results of their shared effort is 'Vicadin', [...]

Filed under: The Hit List Once upon a time -- or, say, 1997 -- electronic music was set-up to be the new alternative. But despite the music industry hype machine, it was not to be. The music, then still intrinsically tied to the rave scene, was simply too underground, no matter how popular it got and, besides, there was no Kurt Cobain -esque icon to push it mainstream. That is, until 2010, when dance music finally took over pop as [...]

The event takes place Saturday, Nov. 13, and also includes musical performances from Beck and Caetano Veloso . The neo-hippie rocker is one of [...]

In the time I have spent not writing, my ears have taken me in many directions--many of them being diametrically opposed. This is one of those times. With my discovery, and more importantly exploration, of the Flying Lotus' music, I thought more and more of the lasting effect of John Coltrane and his music. If you weren't aware, Steven Ellison (FL) is the great nephew of John and Alice Coltrane and is part of the huge family of Coltrane music. Here are the two ends of the Coltrane sonic spectrum--the harsh, polyphonic textures of Flying Lotus [...]
Holy shit I'm tired. And by that I mean "here's another Spotify monthly playlist from the grandiose ears of self" or some other shite like that... There shall be mentaldom, animals fighting out to the death and probably boogieing while we're at it!!Hooray and stuff.... Rating: 4 out of 5 stars In the vast, deep of night, we peer into the cosmos searching for answers to all of life's questions. For innumerable years, humans have gazed to the stars. Some receive answers. For producer and beat-maker Steven Ellison, (AKA Flying Lotus) rooting deep in the earth, peering high into the sky, and becoming one with the universe is the modus operandi on his latest full length album Cosmogramma . Those unfamiliar with FlyLo, may have unwittingly heard some of his first work as a beat-maker during Adult Swim's commercial [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Video , New Music Sure, there might be a bevy of bikini-clad girls splashing around in the Black Keys ' record-label promo and unofficial music video for their new track 'Next Girl,' but what you should really pay attention to is the yellow scrolling alert at the bottom. Calling it an "attempt by their record label to attract attention to the band using a ridiculous dinosaur" -- who happens to be named Frank [...]

Alice Coltrane: Journey in Satchidananda [ purchase ] There aren't enough harpists in jazz these days. Alice Coltrane may have never completely escaped the shadow of her iconic husband, but she did create some fascinating music. Conversant on piano and harp, she uses both to good effect on this funky bit of free jazz. (And let me just say...a bit of funk goes a long way towards making free jazz more accessible, IMHO.) With a few of her late husband's former sidemen on board [...]

Julian Lynch posted a new track from his upcoming album, the man is as prolific as it comes. Another outpouring of psychedelic sweets, Lynch seems to draw a lot of inspiration from the great experimental pioneer, Alice Coltrane. Very excited to see what this man has to offer on his new record. You can listen to the song on his blog here .

The 1946 film Humoresque , starring Joan Crawford, John Garfield, and Oscar Levant is a real gem, and a real oddball movie. It's a New York movie at heart. Garfield is a rough and tumble guy who grew up above his father's Brooklyn grocery store (I'm thinking in my haunt of Williamsburg- it has that A Tree Grows In Brooklyn feel). It turns out he's a child prodigy violinist. He's got a plain-jane musician girlfriend, until vampy Joan Crawford comes around, turned-on by Garfield's music and ethnic upbringing. The film has amazingly witty dialogue courtesy of Clifford [...]
