One listen to Alice Russell's voice will send shivers down your spine and leave goose bumps on your neck. Alice's lavishly soulful voice is both timeless and modern. Live or on record, she always performs with her trademark self assurance and sass. Listening to Alice, you'd naturally think she grew up on the streets of Detroit, just around the corner from Motown's legendary recording studios, but surprisingly enough the blue-eyed, blonde-haired lass hails from Brighton, U.K. Although her style is predominantly bluesy and soul lament, it also encompasses everything from funk to gospel to jazz and beyond. . She's much, much, much better. . You should get to know her. She has an amazing voice and a great ear for production (Nostalgia 77, Quantic, ect). The only thing she doesn't have going is the whole "I'm a crack addict and life is pointless" strain and pain in her voice. Which Amy has dialed and does come through the speakers. Good or bad, it does add a 'lil something. . What Ms. Russell lakes in suicidal-ness she more than [...]

As a Hotel Cafe alum and with the 2008 release of new album Firesight , Jesse Baylin is going to be huge. With her first visit to Lawrence, Kansas, Baylin took some (and by some, I mean a lot) of his time there to speak with Joshua about her album, Hotel Cafe and even astrology. Check the interview here: Jessie Baylin : So this is Lawrence, Kansas. Joshua Hammond, Popwreckoning : Have you never been here before? JB : I've never been here. PW : This [...]
No surprise that it's another small release week. Mostly unknown or undesirable releases, with a few gems, namely the stateside release of the Justice DVD that I want, a Thrice live DVD and a Cat Power EP. There's also a debut from a new Asthmatic Kitty band called The Welcome Wagon that our old pal Jon Shell tipped me off about . They sound a lot like Sufjan Stevens , so if you swing that way, check them out. :: Alice Russell , [...]

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the Alice Russell show at Thekla in Bristol, England. What a great excuse for a road trip - to travel from Oxford, on a mission to see this up and coming British Soul singer, to a city that I hadn't yet been to, but had heard so much about - with its vibrant music scene and rich historical heritage. For some reason, quite a few acts have been skipping Oxford while on tour in the UK, which is why these excursions have become necessary. [...]

Music in the 2000's is starting to seem a lot like some sci-fi movie where people no longer have new babies, but simply clone people from the past to keep the population going strong. There's barely music that will be classified as "2000's" in ten years, but everywhere you look there's some kind of revivalism going on. There's garage-rock revival, 80's revival, dance rock revival, punk revival, shoegazer revival, lo-fi revival, etc. Since Amy Winehouse and Gnarls Barkley reached superstar status and Dreamgirls became a huge hit, the whole [...]

Alice Russell's sophomore studio album Pot of Gold was released digitally on November 4th and will be released physically on January 6th, 2009. The British soul singer has been compared to Amy Winehouse , Joss Stone, Adele, and Duffy. Songs like "Turn and Run" are all hyperspeed tempo, retro soul vocals, and brass. "Two Steps" begins with a bland, cookie cutter arrangement, but Russell's voice saves the second half of the song. The comparisons are understandable, but I find Alice's voice much more palatable than [...]

While it's my opinion that the Hotel Cafe is of no real need for explanation, it is also safe to assume that is it possible that it may have slipped under the radar of a reader or two. The venue, which started as nothing more than a downtown coffee shop in Los Angeles, has spun into one of the most respected venues in the nation. It aimed to give artists a place where they could feel comfortable and free of the grinding competition created by the recording industry. It's reputation of a friends first environment helped create a [...]

Brighton, UK singer Alice Russell played the Hiro Ballroom Friday evening. This was her and her band's third ever NYC show and there seemed to be repeat show goers amongst the couple hundred in the crowd. Alice is part of the recent wave of female singers in the R&B/Soul revival emanating out of the UK. No doubt she's talented and has a great voice that mixes a bit of classic with modern and a side of unique. Her stage presence was good too. Overall, I didn't feel blown away, but would say she is worth [...]

I've been a fan of Alice Russell's ever since her work with the Quantic Soul Orchestra, and her latest solo effort, Pot of Gold, does not disappoint. As much as I'm a huge fan of other British girl vocalists like Amy Winehouse and Duffy, I'll go out on a limb and say that Russell can sing circles around all of them. Russell has recorded or performed with just about everyone – Massive Attack, the Roots, Femi Kuti, De La Soul. Most recently, she leant her voice to the legendary [...]

We are excited to tell you that Alice Russell's sophomore studio album, 'Pot Of Gold' has been released digitally and is now set for physical release on January 6th, 2009 in the US on Six Degrees Records. Alice has developed a burgeoning career as one of the hottest UK soul singers today. While comparisons have been made to other popular British vocalists like Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele, one listen and look at Alice and you can immediately tell she's in a class by herself. Continuing with finds from London record shopping, you get not one, but two covers of the same White Stripes song. The song in question is "Seven Nation Army," the lead track off the White Stripes' 2002 album Elephant and the Stripes' biggest hit. It's been covered a number of times, both recorded and live versions. The Dynamics are a France-based group with members from the U.K., the U.S. and France. Their 2007 debut album Version Excursions contains reggae versions of a number of songs, of older and [...]

This " KCRW Presents " night was another excellent example of the creative efforts of various collaborators involved. We were thoroughly impressed. Parties involved: KCRW , Barker Block Lofts , LearnAboutWine.com , and of course the awesome line-up. As an open house party, The Barker Block Lofts hosted Learn About Wine which well-hashed various a la cartes and an unlimited Beer & Wine tasting with over 40 wines & microbrews. The image gallery does no justice to the lofts inside. They were really neat, especially if you have a handle on getting some [...]
