A surprisingly quiet month at our local B&N's, especially the USQ mothership. Here are some February 2012 bookstore events that looked interesting to me for one reason or another. Barnes & Noble New York 02/02 Mike Doughty: The Book of Drugs A Memoir (Tri) 02/06 Tom Santopietro: The Godfather Effect (86th & Lex) 02/07 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: What Color Is My World? (Tri) 02/07 Elaine Hall: Seven Keys to Unlock Autism (86th & Lex) 02/14 Dave Isay: All There Is Love Stories from StoryCorps (82nd & Bway) [...]

What a great, interesting year for music consumption. Spotify gave me the ability to discover tons of new music and keep up with the current scene, while iTunes Match allowed me to rediscover music that was collecting dust on my disconnected external hard drive. My favorite albums of 2011 are filled with the usual suspects that I've come to love over the years (Wilco, The Decemberists), but this year, more than ever, are a bunch of bands that are completely new to me. Here's a list, complete with MP3s, streams, videos, and whatever relevant links I could put [...]

I tend to read a lot of music-related books. Over the past few months I've finished Decoded by Jay-Z, A Wizard, A True Star: Todd Rundgren in the Studio by Paul Myers and Just Kids by Patti Smith. I just started reading You Must Go and Win by Alina Simone and can't seem to put it down. I hope to post something about each of these books in the near future. One I really enjoyed is now available at Amazon . It's called EXPERIENCED: Rock Music Tales of Fact & [...]

As part of Alina Simone 's promotion for her new book and album , she got a bunch of poets to read some Craigslist Music Auditions. There's a part of her book that talks about the trials and tribulations she went through early on her music career trying to find producers and other people to work with, and this video was inspired by that.

"I was not even on the cusp of writing a book, or an article or a short story or anything." The resulting book is a collection of funny, cynical essays on meeting sketchy producers off of Craigslist, her [...]

The Ukranian-born musician Alina Simone has been quite busy this month with the release of her album Make Your Own Danger (March 31) and her book You Must Go and Win (June 7). The book "traces her bizarre journey through the indie rock world, from disastrous Craigslist auditions with sketchy producers to catching fleas in a Williamsburg sublet. But Simone offers more than down-and-out tales of her time as a struggling musician: she has a rapier wit, slashing and burning her way through the absurdities of life, while offering surprising and poignant insights into the burdens [...]

MP3 : Beautiful Machine I became friends with Alina Simone a few years ago during SXSW and then we released a 73 album split betwen her and The Black Swans. Since then, Alina has been keeping busy, preparing a new full length album and her debut book of essays, both of which are officially available today. Make Your Own Danger is available via limited edition LP/CD/MP3 and her book, You Must Go and Win , is available in finer book stores everywhere. Download a chapter for [...]

The end of the world is happening this weekend, so I thought it'd be a good time to put together a little mix of songs I'm listening to right before it all ends. Using 8Tracks , I made this little 8 song nugget: If the world doesn't end, we may have more fun with 8Tracks with the other writers, special guests, etc. Full mix tracklisting after the jump. tUnE-yArDs, "My Country" Wild Flag, "Glass Tambourine" The Mountain Goats, "Damn These Vampires" Beastie Boys [...]

MP3 Dreaming of a Blackout (demo) Over the next few months, Alina Simone has a new book, a new full length album (with vinyl), and oh yeah, a baby coming. 2011 is going to be a busy year indeed. So she's cleaned out the digital closet, if you will, and has released an album of 16 demo songs that have not seen the light of day. Recorded between 2002 and 2008, these songs are mostly just Alina and a guitar but still pack the same punch as her finished, produced [...]
New Year's Eve-amateur night to some, and to others the best excuse for one hell of a time. Musicians usually add a slight twist of their own, including Alina Simone, who gets creative with her resolutions. Neimo spent one New Year's Eve performing for a good cause. And then there's Johnny Foreigner, who turned it into an entirely new holiday (just add booze). No matter how you spend it, have a great night, don't do anything we wouldn't do (options aplenty) and see you new and improved in 2011! Alina [...]

We thought we'd revisit an idea from earlier this year, where we compiled a pair of lists with the best Bob Dylan covers you probably hadn't already heard. This time around, we've gathered ten of the best Britney Spears covers you've never heard. And since you probably haven't heard ANY Britney Spears covers, it's all but certain that the experience will be a novel one for Spears fans and foes alike.

Filed under: News , Exclusive Anti-folk musician Jeffrey Lewis grew up as a comic book fan since the age of three and was exposed to works such as 'The Watchmen,' 'V for Vendetta' and 'Love and Rockets.' It was a love he never shook off during college and as a budding musician in the '90s, when he would create comic book fliers to promote his shows. "I always used to say the show was advertising the flier more than the flier was advertising the show," Lewis tells Spinner. "It would [...]

WARNING: This post may cause uncontrollable bouts of severe enjoyment and musical discovery. Also by the time this page loads, SXSW may well be over. /END WARNING Disclaimer - Each year the SXSW organisers have been releasing hundreds and hundreds of songs by the artists who take part in the festival and bundling it up into a torrent for everyone to download and enjoy. It's completely legal as they've been given permission by the artists and labels to offer these songs for free, and this year was no [...]
So, I finally got out to see some shows last night, and while I got home way too late, it was a pretty productive evening on the whole. I started out* my CMJ at the M for Montreal showcase at Arlene's Grocery where I took in BEAST, Think About Life, and Malajube. During We Are Wolves set, I snuck over to the Mercury to catch the charming Mumford and Sons. After Malajube went off, I headed over to Cake Shop to catch CMJ buzz band, Surfer Blood and then I capped off the night at Living Room with a couple [...]
