Alina Simone 's songs, driven by her razor voice, are heart-stomping marvels. She puts it out there in the manner of the early non-Starbucks-y Cat Power/PJ Harvey with a little of that Sleater-Kinney swagger, but she has her own voice, though. Her voice and guitar sit impossibly high in the mix, with every note hanging [...]

Download: Summer Hymns -- "Start Swimming" Download: Alina Simone -- "Black Water" Friday, July 27th—Caledonia Lounge (Happy Hour show), Athens, GA—Free Go There Now! Summer Hymns . Zachary Gresham's long-running project Summer Hymns just released what might be its finest album ever, 2006's Backward Masks, a cohesing of the band's experimental and traditional elements. Summer Hymns' songs are bittersweet and frequently lovely, but they come imbued with a shocking and caustic wit, which often translates to the band's free-flowing live performances. [...]

The "name the influence" game, whether or not it turns out to be accurate, is way too tempting to play. It's just plain lazy to say a band sounds like "XTC and Journey carpooling to a Clap Your Hands Say Yeah show," but sometimes it's the most succinct way to sum up a band's sound. Reductive yes, but also succinct. When I first listened to Alina Simone's record Placelessness, many names starting coming to mind: PJ Harvey, Sleater-Kinney, Chan Marshall, Patti Smith. The influences seem obvious, and why not? Who wouldn't want to sound like those artists? Alina Simone -...
Alina Simone's debut solo album, Placelessness, is released August 14th. from the onion at this point i hate the iphone much like jerry, elaine, kramer and george hated the drake. well, looky what we have here. i was pretty pscyed to find after waking up from nine hour slumber that a promotion company was kind enough to send me info on the upcoming adam franklin, ex-swervedriver, record. one thing i found interesting [...]

Alina Simone first caught my ear on the wonderful Yerbird folk compilation record (are you tired of me mentioning that record yet?). Her contribution – Gunshots – was a powerful, slow burner that made me wonder how I had overlooked her EP. Needless to say, I was super excited when her debut full-length ended up in my mailbox. Placelessness , like that song, is a showcase for Alina's vocals. Undoubtedly, the Ukraine born singer has a cannon for a mouthpiece, but a booming voice isn't the only thing needed to make a great record. [...]

The Artificial Sea Genre: Indie / Electronica / Experimental From: Brooklyn, New York Brooklyn duo, The Artificial Sea, fashion melancholic, smoky jazz infused soundscapes that quietly crawl out of the speakers like silent tears from a weeping madonna. Like a Lamb/Bjork trip hop supergroup their haunting, etherael, slightly edgy music hints at a record collection that includes The Cranes, Portishead, Everything But The Girl, Tuxedo Moon and Massive Attack. Got a nice email from Alina Simone ( here ) the other day with news of her new album on a new label. It included links to two songs that I wasn't supposed to publish. However I think I've successfully gotten around that with a song linked from Alina's SxSW page. Here's a song off her debut record, Placelessness , due out this summer on 54 40 Or Fight . The song "Saw Edged Grass" from Placelessness has upped the ante with a more aggressive, dynamic sound. Catch Alina [...]

Pawn Shop, Don Baccus Pawn Shop On Fire - The Wingdale Community Singers "Pawn Shop On Fire" makes me think of that dry, curious phrase much beloved of police spokespeople and community newspapers, "neighborhood incident." With its cynical veneer of neutrality, neighborhood incident brackets everything from aborted petty theft to domestic violence to something that happened last week here [...]
