Photography by Me ! What is twee? Since the beginning of the dawn of man, this question seems to exist at the very core of our being... I asked the Super Desserts during my interview , and the standard mentions of cutesy music and not-so-cutesy lyrics came up, but really what is cutesy? Is THIS twee? What about this? *shrug* But really, this is really not about "twee", [...]

I've been to the Rickshaw Stop . Love the place. But SF Popfest - with all my time in the Bay, this was still something new to me so I knew not what to expect. I was more than pleasantly surprised. My evening kicked off with Cars Can Be Blue . Advertised as "Athens' own filthy pop duo," they passed with flying colors at living up to their name. They were 100% unadulterated, vulgar adolescence brought to life with a guitar, a simple drum kit, and lyrics imported straight [...]

While epicsauce have been throwing up some epic line-ups since they started this whole Milk Bar concert series; this has to be one of favorite of the series so far. Not only does it feature some of my favorite Bay Area acts, Silian Rail and By Sunlight along with the Devontionals (who I'm interested in hearing being it's Tyson from Two Gallants and Anton from Judgement Day ), but it's free! Also, you have the official afterparty with YACHT and a DJ set by The Straight [...]
Rose Melberg found fierceness in Tiger Trap and even more fierceness in softness with the Softies before beginning a solo career early in this millennium. Her new album Homemade Ship is out now on K and she speaks on Sunday morning from her mother's house. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

I've got a backlog of stuff I never reviewed last year, so I'm going to try and post a few of them over the next couple days. I'm right in the middle of an insanely busy time of year. I've got finals, immediately followed by the last two debate tournaments of my life as a (relatively) full-time debate coach. It's going to the coolest. But anyways, I need the occasional break, so posting on some of this stuff will be a nice respite. True Believer - Aimee Mann [...]

Today's randomness is a musical homonym, which I consider to be two (or more) songs with the same title but different music, lyrics, etc. Short version: same title, different song. I'll be doing a super special post on Monday, hence doing this Homonym Monday on Friday. I found it ironic that the leadoff song from one of my favorite albums from last year (KaiserCartel's March Forth) had the same title of what will be one of my favorite albums from this year (Andrew Bird's Noble Beast). And it is even more ironic that I compared KaiserCartel to Mr. [...]

You better hope gas prices stay low until February! Portland's fantastic Magic Marker Records just announced their anniversary show! And it's amazing! read more

I'm going to come right out and say it: The Thermals are a great American rock 'n' roll band. There. I said it. The Portland three-piece has been busy putting the finishing touches on its new record Now We Can See , all while celebrating President-elect Barack Obama's victory, celebrating Thanksgiving, recruiting new drummer Westin Glass , gearing up for a PacNorWest/Euro mini-tour and choosing which label would actually put out their fourth record ... sheesh, a great American rock 'n' roll band's work is never done. In the end [...]
I went to the VERA Project last Saturday looking for a break from the wintry monotony, and received not only some summer fun, but peanut butter sandwiches and a healthy dosage of local pop too. read more

Saturday night in Seattle is looking like it could be a logistical puzzle without a solution. There are no less than four shows that I can highly recommend. I'd like to be at all of them, but physically and chronologically I don't think it's possible. Option 1 : The Green Pajamas at Jules Mae Saloon Starting down in the south end at Jules Mae Saloon in Georgetown, the Green Pajamas , one Seattle's most [...]
This is a fantastic weekend for indie pop in Seattle! read more
You can probably guess from the album cover over there that this post is long overdue. Remember summer? Me neither - it snowed in Minneapolis yesterday. Ugh. All Girl Summer Fun Band - Looking Into It. Actually, Looking Into It came out only a few weeks ago, as the first release on All Girl Summer Fun Band Music. The band hails from Portland, OR, and consists of Jen, Kathy (also bassist in the Thermals), and Kim. This record is well played, well sung, and well arranged. It's also really fun. The track we're allowed to post happens to be the...

The new All Girl Summer Fun Band! The leaves are just beginning to fall and the air is chillier and starting to smell really good – and the new record from The All Girl Summer Fun Band could not have possibly come at a better time! Looking Into It , the band's 3rd full-length (their first without summer fun girl Ari Douangpanya, and first to be self-released through their AGSFBmusic label), sees the girls moving into a slightly more rocking direction. Somewhat gone are the cutesy songs of old, and instead what we [...]

Friday, September 26, 2008 I hate to have to do this, but because of work and Austin City Limits I'm going to have to cancel this weekend's podcast and delay the film rundown until Monday. On the flip side of things, there is a good chance that I'll now be in and around Zilker Park for a large part of ACL, I'll for sure see Okkervil River, Man Man and Crooked Fingers at Emo's and I might get to attend Conor Oberst, M. Ward and Jenny Lewis at La Zona Rosa. Crazy! [...]

If you're familiar with the All Girl Summer Fun Band , they're back. This time around though, they're hitting the airwaves as a threesome. Taking up the challenge of re-forming themselves minus Ari Douangpanya , the three remaining girls shacked up in Kim Baxter 's basement to pump out the eleven track Looking Into It . If you're not familiar with the girls (they have been around, but flying under the radar, for ten years), imagine someplace between The Breeders and The Donnas , and you'll be in the neighborhood of [...]
TV on the Radio's Dear Science has been getting a lot of buzz so if you're "hip" and "with it" you should probably get on that. Genghis Tron is putting out some remixes, Danielson Famile is reissuing some vinyl and if for some reason you need a physical copy of the Girl Talk album that did the pay-your-price thing a while back, that's out too. And (this makes me cringe) the first few Christmas albums are starting to pop up. It's September , people. [...]
