On Friday, this NYC reporter will be flying down to Austin early in the morning to take in the amazing sights and sounds of the 6th-annual Austin Psych Fest . Having gone to last year's APF, I knew I couldn't miss this year's celebration of some of the best psychedelic music being made today...and yesterday. Here's a little background from Austin Psych Fest's website: "Austin Psych Fest was founded in 2008. Over the years, this independent festival has grown from a small word-of-mouth event to an internationally acclaimed, full weekend event that attracts attendees from [...]
GRAPHICS BY SARAH HEINEMANN Festival season is upon us, and it's time for my favorite one of them all, Austin Psych Fest. It's still a relative baby, only in it's sixth year, but boasts a line-up that proves it's here to stay. For the first time, the event is moving out of a traditional venue and into the great outdoors - Carson Creek Ranch to be exact. They now offer weekend-long camping, the perfect way to really soak up those psychedelic reverberations. Bands don't start until the afternoon, giving you time to recover each morning before diving [...]

Mixtape: Bay Area Artists, Remixing and Remixed (Podcast #304) All too frequently, remixes are just okay , but when they are great, they're really something special. A truly great remix can shed new light on the original artist's work and stand on its own as a unique creation. That's no easy feat, either, given the tension between staying true to an original song's components and a reworker's desire to create something new and personal. These days, it feels far too easy to get remix fatigue. Reworkings seem to pop up almost immediately after [...]

Al Lover’s Official Psych Fest 2013 Mix

As the week comes to a close, we gather up the pros and cons with a bit of hope and optimism despite the odds. Chief Keef's gun range Pitchfork interview cost him 2 months in juvie for violating probation while Meyhem Lauren struck back at the 'fork with the diss track, "The Laurenovich Angle (Fuck Pitchfork)". While word has it that Lil B will not be performing at the Grammys, the legions of Radiohead fans can hear unreleased material Thom Yorke dropped via Dazed Digital while...

Al Lover is back at it, churning out yet another quality remix. This time, he gives us his take on "Fuzz's Fourth Dream", the b-side on the 7-inch released by Fuzz , the new project from Ty Segall and Charles Moothart. The track is a slo-mo, head-bobbin', bass-heavy drone that matches the original's intensity, although it's a little bit less Sabbath and little bit more Trent Reznor and Karen O doing "Immigrant Song". Lover hinted at the subject of the remix on Twitter a day before officially dropping it on the Interwebs: [...]

Psychedelic alchemist Al Lover has been very busy lately. Yesterday we shared his Official Austin Psych Fest 2013 Mix, today he's got a remix of a cut from Suicide's 1997 S/T debut LP Ghost Rider . He put it on his SoundCloud page with the following commentary "I've wanted to do something with this track for a while. One of the best punk songs of all time... ruined." We agree with the former and disagree with the later. What do you think? Suicide; Ghost Rider [...]

Now this is what you call a stacked line-up: Night Beats , The Mallard , Cool Ghouls , and The Woolen Men , all playing together at Brick & Mortar this Friday night. It promises to be a seriously psych-rockin' good time. Plus, my man Al Lover will be DJing between sets, so you know shit will be gettin' trippy, with no let up. And we want to send you and a [...]
![[Listen] Suicide: "Ghost Rider" (Al Lover Remix)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4670992_lg.jpg)

This will undoubtedly gain me a few haters, but the emptiness of Suicide's recordings bothers me. Why can't it be louder? It does not need to be bombastic. I don't demand extravagent crescendos or cock-rock riffing atop their industrial grind. I just want the mix turned up, way the fugg up. Al Lover is the homie. He's been the homie for some time, in music and in knocking back cheap beer. Without prompting him, he's zeroed in on the aspect of Suicide that's stung me and ...

A favorite of The Bay Bridged, San Francisco's Al Lover is back with a jaw-dropping remix of Nick Waterhouse 's rhythm and blues masterpiece "That Place". According to Lover, the two met a couple years ago at Rooky Ricardo's Records in the Lower Haight, and their friendship quickly led to discussions of remixing one of Waterhouse's tracks. Eventually, he chose "That Place", the b-side to Waterhouse's 2010 debut single "Some Place". Lover tells us, "I pitched down the saxophone and combined layers of crunchy breaks [...]
