If 2011 was the year I dove headlong into local music , then 2012 was the year that I really began to dissect and discern the artists and the community that create the music (or at least I hope that's something of the impression that I've been leaving on the pages of this blog). Among the multitude of reasons I continue to do this, lying near the top, is watching local artists develop and grow (or in many cases, regress)—the choices they make, the strategies they employ, the trends they embrace. It's a fascinating slice of human theater and [...]

All The Saints ' second record, Intro To Fractions , hasn't seen an official US release yet, but it's been out and about on the web for a while after being delayed by the death of Touch & Go, who was originally slated to release it back in 2009. Regardless of all that, it's another phenomenal album from one of my favourite Atlanta bands, so you should track it down. They play Friday (June 29th) at 529. All The Saints facebook [...]

Here are three cracking reasons to turn the volume all the way up to 11 on your stereo and blast these into your neighbourhood. First up is The Men with the title track to their forthcoming album Open Your Heart - this has more than an echo of the Buzzcocks classic Ever Fallen In Love as they submerge an almost-pop riff beneath dissonant, strident guitar hooks and breakdowns. a [...]

Repetition works. I didn't particularly need any reminding of that statement - after all, certain sub-genres of music have already established repetition as their foundations, such as some forms of electronica, not to mention krautrock - but when it's used by a band to deliberately rein themselves in, it is so much more effective. Atlanta, Georgia's All the Saints [ Facebook ] would know all about that, because their impeccable sense of restraint is what makes their second album, Intro to Fractions , such a compelling listen. It's not the most immediate album around by any stretch of the [...]
As a former Algebra teacher it’s extremely important to understand how fractions work, your future depends on it. For instance, to add them you must have common denominators. The new album from noise-rock-blur-gaze trio All The Saints , Intro To Fractions , comes out on January 30 through Souterrains Transmissions . It has very little to do with mathematics, but it’s clear that these dudes all love 90’s heavyweights My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana and The Pixies in equal parts. “Half Red, Half Way” is somewhat nostalgic yet shows the trio moving [...]

Goddamn, am I excited for a new All the Saints record. Maybe not five-year-old girl with a sack of puppies excited, but definitely STOKED. And even if Intro to Fractions sounds like the title of an album MATH4EVA would abandon his basement apartment to make, I doubt if you'll hear many arpeggiated guitars or schizophrenic time changes when it comes out. What you will get, though, is more of the colossal guitar thunder and mind-bending space grooves the band has become known for. Bank on it. I'm not usually one to lay grand expectations [...]

In my review of All the Saint's 2008 release, Fire on Corridor X , I said, "All the Saints play this trippy, drug-induced music that reminds me of those movies that seemed particularly eerie on overcast, grey Sunday afternoons. If these guys made a video that showed nothing but crows flying to and from an old, abandoned house with the windows boarded up, it would be PERFECT." All the Saints is just a month away from releasing Intro to Fractions and they've released a video for "Half Red, Half [...]
Atlanta-based noise rockers All The Saints will release their new album 'Intro To Fractions' on January 30 via Souterrain Transmissions featuring 'Half Red, Half Way'. The trio's explosive wall of guitars hasn't lessened since their 2009 record 'Fire On Corridor X'. The influence of early 90s rock is explicit along with a tendency toward bluesy psych rock. 'Half Red, Half Way' sounds huge, it rumbles and brawls, eventually imploding in an almighty finish. Atlanta’s All The Saints return to follow up 2009’s ‘ Fire on Corridor X ’ with another dose of hulking riffs and shoe-gazing grunge. ‘ Intro to Fractions’ , their new album, will be released on January 30 th through Souterrain Transmissions (Tweak Bird, Zola Jesus, Moon Duo etc). The album’s opener ‘Half Red, Half Way’ is an anxious, propulsive rumble, never more than moments from imploding – until it [...]
