Anybody catch Lambchop, Cortney Tidwell & The Features at that glorious house show last night? I wanted to share the deets with everyone, but it was at a private residence in honor of the AIMS folk... Continue reading "Weekend Round-Up: Mixed Precipitation Style! Part 2" >

I still haven't quite come down from our historic election, and I'm giddy that in few weeks we're going to have a president who has the judgement to start us on our way out of the huge messes we've found ourselves in during the past eight years. But I need to stop blathering on about democracy and get back to being, you know... a music blog. So here's my tip to help you get your weekend started off right (and a little bit early). Go see All We Seabees [...]

All We Seabees - MKUltra It's always a good feeling when you introduce a friend to a band, and they enjoy their show so much that they go home with a CD. It's probably akin to the way a political fundraiser feels when they convince someone to pony up a donation to their candidate... except in this case the person actually gets something for their money other than a bunch of promises. The latest case of my musical tastemaking was Saturday night, when [...]

Thursday feels like the real first day of the festival, which is no surprise really, considering the fact that there are fifteen different showcases for you to choose from, or hop in between. Yes, FIFTEEN. It's enough to make your head spin, which is one of the main reasons I decided to do these showcase-by-showcase preview posts in the first place. This is going to be a night of tough decisions no matter what your tastes in music veer towards - you've got several different brands of rock and singer-songwriter stuff to choose from. [...]

Last August I invited All We Seabees to guest-DJ an episode of Out the Other after catching only one of their gigs (opening for Hotpipes) and being pretty much blown away. It seems crazy that that was just over a year ago, because that show basically served as my introduction to the band - and here we are at the end of this August, and All We Seabees is absolutely one of my favorite Nashville bands. On tonight's show, we're going to be celebrating the upcoming release [...]
For me, Saturday was THE day to be at Forecastle. The schedule for Saturday was thrown off for a half hour due to the Morning State canceling last minute, so the day started off with All We Seabees on the small stage, and Go Van Gogh took a later spot on the main stage. One of the most unexpected treats of the day however, was the Seedy Seeds from Cincinnati. Mixing a very cute kind of folk pop with Jenny Lewis-like vocals and a sometimes electro-pop feel thanks to some prerecorded beats, the Seedy [...]

In lieu of a Monday morning mini-mix today, you're going to get a nice mp3 preview of all the bands playing at tonight's 8 off 8th at Mercy Lounge ! Which, if you happened to forget, will be hosted by yours truly, along with fellow WRVU DJ/local music fan Joe Baine Colvert of Indie Ghetto (he happens to be a freshly minted blogger too). Joe and I have an amazing lineup set up for you - including three long-term OTO favorites that I've been talking about for ages, so if you haven't [...]

All We Seabees - Lady Alaska I've mentioned before that one of the things I love about All We Seabees is how they manage to combine so many different styles into a cohesive whole. Their new CD, Lady Alaska is a perfect example of that. There's a hint of psychedelia, and a healthy dose of Irish soul. It has the narrative tradition of folk music [...]
All We Seabees - " Black Girls " I think I'm going to remember 2007 as the year I got into the Nashville music scene. Yes, I've been talking about local bands and musicians since I started the blog (and my radio show on WRVU), but this is the year I really got out there and took advantage of the music this town has to offer. In a year when I saw more performances than maybe the past few years combined (I don't have the final count yet, but it's something like 90 shows, [...]

The last time I mentioned All We Seabees on here, I said that they might my new favorite local band. I've seen them twice since then, and the verdict is in... they are definitely my fave Nashville outfit out there right now. They just seem to have everything I love about music all wrapped up in one tidy package. Their live sets are equal parts folky strum and distortion laden walls of sound. The songs are quirky enough to be interesting but catchy enough to stay stuck in your head [...]

A few weeks ago I had All We Seabees in to guest-DJ an episode of Out the Other, and I was incredibly disappointed to discover that the show didn't end up archiving. Not only did Byran Fox, Justin Fox, David Swartout and Zach Powers all make excellent DJs, they were also charming and well-spoken on the air and we ended up spending a good chunk of the two hours getting to know the band. Hopefully I'll get them back into the studio later this fall, but in the meantime I still wanted [...]
Once again, sad news - the show didn't archive again this week, so unfortunately you won't be able to hear the two hours I spent on the air with All We Seabees . Really, really unfortunately, because we definitely spent a good chunk of the show getting to know the band, and I feel like we chatted about everything - what it was like to move into the Nashville music scene, the new material the band just finished playing, favorite bands in Nashville and favorite releases so far this year, and lots, lots more. [...]
