Reposted w/ individual mp3s (in case you don't want the whole mix): Clif started the Something for Later mixes as an outlet for longer or more subdued musical pieces, and they were initially posted on the now defunct Paper Crane Collective blog site. I decided to take up the project but refocus on experimental rock, avant garde pop, freak folk, and electronic music. Volume 3 compiles track from the mostly the first half of 2011: Something for Later Vol. 3 - 2011 [click to download ZIP file] [...]

...The story of Zanglust has persevered through the ages to become a legend of downy softness proportions. His life became an inspiration to over a million ants. Our story begins at the Crustacean Circus, with the most renowned antcrobats of the time. The tragedy opens with Zip and Zap Lust letting their obsession with public fornication accidentally destroy their lives... This band called Allegories, from Hamilton, Ontario, popped up in our Dropbox with their 2008 album, Surreal Auteur. Why this album is being sent around now is a mystery to me. Could be because the band just posted it Bandcamp last and week and wanted to make another push at getting it heard. (Editor's Note:...

Allegories is an ironic name for this project – if there are moral stories within the lyrics, they are difficult to discern through the layers of hum and haze; if the music acts as extended metaphor, it is nebulous at best because the albums sounds different on repeated listens. Nonetheless, the slow build of orchestra, synthesizer, guitar, and drums combined with off-key operatic purring provides an interesting collage, suitable for background track, computer speaker noise, or intensive headphone listening. Fans of Mercury Rev and Piano Magic should find this of interest. Album [...]
Allegories - Homepage

A few weeks back, I had ordered a physical copy of Allegories' Surreal Auteur , one of my Top 40 of 2008 and an album I reviewed here , but by mistake, I was sent a copy of The Rest's sophomore album Everyone All At Once (The Rest is Allegories' Adam Bentley and Jordan Mitchell's other band with five additional members, including Anna Jarvis, Blake Bowman, Dwayne Brydon, Matty Buzanko and Steve Jones) and a limited, hand-crafted edition of their single Apples & Allergies. There couldn't have been a more fortuitous error. Everyone All At [...]
Ontario's the Rest is a choice soundtrack for this February chill. With some well developed melodies and song structures, the band manages to stay catchy without an obvious adherence to the pop song structure. It would be hard to confine these six Canadians into anything, really. They pull together a fantastic show of orchestral pop without even a blink. The group is fronted by a familiar face to the Needle Drop: Adam Bently. We've reviewed Adam's other project, Allegories ; and even though the two acts have a lot in common, the Rest toys with [...]

So, we've come to the second last installment of my Top 40 Albums of 2008. Before plunging into the fray once more, I will attempt to remind you of what music the summer of 2008 brought with it. July kicked off with releases by Beck, The Black Ghosts, Ratatat, The Hold Steady, and an excellent Kitsune remix album by Digitalism. The month ended with albums from post-punk veterans Wire, CSS, Bodies of Water, Little Ones, Friendly Fires, The Black Kids, and The Great Northwest. Of course there was also a rather disappointing new album from Primal Scream and the debut [...]

Though the Hamilton band Allegories has apparently been popping up on various blogs and on CBC Radio 3 many months ago, I only just discovered them and their debut album Surreal Auteur , and I'm thoroughly impressed. The band, which consists of Adam Bentley and Jordan Mitchell, have created a sonic epic that is naturally human in its myriad unnatural sounds. Like their name, Allegories can be so many things at once, whole yet apart. Surreal Auteur 's twelve tracks are split into three movements: Grand Ascension (Curtains), Marvellous Man & Mouse and Worthy Conclusion for Zanglust Our [...]

Allegories Genre: Experimental / Pop / Showtunes From: Ontario Canada Ethereal, there I've said it. It was only a matter of time before the e word was used so I thought I'd get it out of the way early in this review of Canadian duo Allegories' recently released debut album 'Surreal Auteur'. It's such an over used word [...]

If I had a bunch of money, like, if me and Jim Kramer went into a hedge fund and it went ballistic or somethin', I would buy a lot of stuff. I'm materialistic. Having shit is aces. I would get a Telecaster, a Sea-Doo jet ski, a sitar, a shit-ton of Wii games, and an anti-gravity tank. The latter would be the most important and most difficult to obtain, as it would be tough fitting an anti-gravity tank in a city apartment - so that item would be coupled with a storage space west of the city somewhere. I would [...]

The Rest - Walk On Water I'm very much looking forward to Everyone All at Once - the follow up album to last year's Atlantis, Oh Our Saviour (which you can still download for free here ). This time the band (Allegories members Jordan Mitchell and Adam Bentley plus friends) took a different approach, which they best sum up themselves: We decided to write and arrange the songs in isolation. We drove away from our select cities, A.D.D. distractions, relationships, and most importantly any escape from making music. We [...]
This song knocked me for six when I heard it first time around. Subsequent listens have proven no less exotic, no matter what way I approach it I continually fail to unravel a single word yet always leave with a bleary intoxication from the dreamy swirls. This is Panda Bear with less obvious reference points, Adam Bentley and Jordan Mitchell venture into the great unknown and come back bearing
