From one of our favorite singer/songwriters representing the sparkly pop/folk constituency, the two-minute version of "The First Noel" by Allie Moss is also an interesting "lyric video" -- all done by the artist herself via a Canon G-10 and iMovie. For a DIY artist like Allie, what could be better than her own "painting by light"? The song is taken from her new three-track EP Christmas Tidings . For more of Miss Moss, check out her 2011 album Late Bloomer on DC (and listen to one of the [...]
Tonight's concert picks: When it comes to indie-rock bands that are composed of romantically involved couples (Mates Of State, The Rosebuds, Handsome Furs), Hank And Cupcakes offers something slightly off-kilter. For one thing, the married pair hails from Israel; for another, along with their silly adopted monikers, the two sport a cheerfully irreverent sensibility. The video for "Hit" features Hank And Cupcakes cavorting in nothing but body paint. With growing popularity and a new album in the works, Hank And Cupcakes is poised to spread its dance party aesthetic beyond the band's Brooklyn base. Hank And Cupcakes performs [...]

Singer-songwriter crafts an album to be seen and not heard. On the US side of the Atlantic, Allie Moss is perhaps best known as Ingrid Michaelson's guitarist, although she had something of surprise UK hit last year with the track "Corner". Verdict? Moss isn't half bad, but there's not much here that distinguishes her from a host of other singer-songwriters writing well-crafted albeit forgettable pop songs that wind up being used on television shows and in commercials. Even the much-hyped and fairly clever "Melancholy Astronautic...
I am currently in the process of my finals week, but fortunately was able to slip away and attend the Electric Daisy Carnival in Orlando, Florida. Whoever got the chance to go...you and I both know that it was a crazy ass time. We got to experience an epic lineup and an even crazier thunderstorm [...]
Allie Moss - Garden State singer/songwriter and talented member of Ingrid Michaelson's band steps out with her full length debut of smart, infectious folk/pop, mixing tracks from her EP's with some new works...there's a reason we've described her songs as "clear-eyed and well-crafted compositions that also have substantial heft in the memorable melody category"...as with many of her ilk, Moss has found a receptive audience overseas: "Corner", used in an oft-seen U.K. commercial (watch after the jump), was a minor Brit hit // [...]

SXSW Alexander Alexander Ebert, frontman for Ima Robot and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, debuted his solo effort "Alexander" at SXSW this year. At one point early in his set, Alex said to the crowd, "You have to be a bit forgiving at SXSW" - turns out there was no need for that warning. Despite the heat, Alex and his band had everyone crowded around the small stage, enthusiastically singing and clapping along. Later, he shrugged off all the cheers, [...]

I do apologise for the absolutely and utter dreadful title of this post. Who am I kidding - no, I don't. Allie moss is a New Jersey singer, vocal coach and guitarist, and has created a wonderful Regina Spector-ish singsong lullaby, full of gentle strumming, hand claps, and lots of doo-doo-doo's, la-la-la's, and ooh-ooh-ooh's. An absolute gem of a song, I guarantee you won't be listening to "Corner" just once. Or twice. Or ten times. This one's a keeper - nobody puts Allie Moss in [...]
We first came across Garden State singer/songwriter Allie Moss a few years ago as the backing guitarist and vocalist with folk/pop DIY sensation Ingrid Michaelson. It was only later, via her debut 2009 EP Passerby, that we discovered Moss was exceptionally talented in her own right, offering up we described then as "clear-eyed and well-crafted compositions (that) also have substantial heft in the memorable melody category." A few months ago, Moss debuted a pair of new songs -- one of which is the lovely "Dig With Me". Also check out the recent British Telecom commercial [...]

This was a year of mixed priorities for me, and less of a focus on music than in prior years. Life gets in the way of such things, and as a result, this is a bit of a smaller list than I've presented in other years. That being said, the sound is no less potent, interesting and fun to listen to. Here's who I thought were some of the best new artists of 2009: Allie Moss - [...]
The men slowly toured the perimeter of the house, taking notes and photographs, like archeologists mapping out a ruin. Upon opening the back door, Vasquez observed that there was just enough space to squeeze past the refrigerator blocking the exit. The air smelled of burned rubber and melted wires; a damp ash covered the ground, sticking to their boots. In the kitchen, Vasquez and Fogg discerned only smoke and heat damage—a sign that the fire had not originated there—and so they pushed deeper into the nine-hundred-and-seventy-five- square-foot building. A central corridor led past a utility room and the master bedroom, then [...]
As an integral member of Ingrid Michaelson's band, singer/songwriter Allie Moss knows something of the endearing, understated pop style that seems to embed itself in the "Grey's Anatomy" soundtack mindset. But lest anyone dismiss her folk/pop songs as overly precious or commercially calculated, it should also be noted that Moss' clear-eyed and well-crafted compositions also have substantial heft in the memorable melody category. We hear an infinite number of artists aiming for the same goal, but few hit the target as assuredly as Allie Moss. A recent seven-track digital EP Passerby exhibits an [...]

Damn, I tried to blog this week, but as you can see, I failed. Big fail. There's a lot on my plate lately. But hopefully, by the time this auto-posts at 5:30pm, I'll be very relaxed, and in a situation similar to this week's cover art. Yep, new car. With the new payments and summer gas prices, I'll probably be spending a lot less time out, and more time at home blogging, so look for an improved post rate in the coming months. For now though, I'm on the road! Weeeeeeeee. UPDATE: Friggin' yeah, I'm driving a new [...]

folk // singer-songwriter Some of you might have seen Allie Moss performing with the lovely Ingrid Michaelson . Her debut EP Passerby (2009) reveals Allie to be a strong and promising singer-songwriter on her own. The extremely captivating "Corner" displays Allie's songwriting skills as well as her sweet vocals and clever phrasing, setting the tone for the rest of her EP. From bittersweet to soft and melancholic, Passerby is a solid and well-crafted collection of folk-pop songs. Gorgeous melody carried by pitter-patter [...]
So I've been in love with this artist for a long while - I came across her myspace many moons ago when all she had was some rough demos and was still working on her album. "Passerby" was the first song that played on her myspace back then and it had me right away, so much to the point that I immediately scrambled to figure out how to play it on the guitar and would play it loudly in the kitchen
