somehow i came across aloha's 2004 here comes everyone , and of course when i say somehow i just dont ever remember buying it, but it just ended up in my collection. if it were a year earlier, i would have blamed my drunken stumblings into my local chicago record stores, but in 04 we were in atlanta and my drunken stumblings through city streets had come to an end (sad face.) maybe i picked it up at criminal records? maybe i downloaded it illegally? i just dont remember? The summer slate of festivals can surely get a little overwhelming, as year after year, more and more events are added to an already-saturated calendar. That growth, given the fact that most of these concert events are totally cleaning up from a bottom line perspective, probably won't change in 2012 (although lingering issues associated with last year's spate of stage collapses may escalate insurance or other associated costs). But, as the pileup of summer is now in the rear-view mirror, autumn offers its share of enticing festivals, and there's a little more differentiation and niche interests represented, in [...]

(credit to venueszine for the picture) Living in central Illinois, there's not much going on in the cultural landscape that's worth mentioning, but Polyvinyl Records in Champaign / Urbana, IL has been a beacon of excellence since their inception as a fan-zine in 1995. This weekend, Polyvinyl is celebrating it's 15th anniversary with a huge concert on the closing day of Pygmalion Festival with a bunch of artists from their roster (including Braid, Japandroids, STRFKR, Asobi Seksu, Deerhoof, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and more). In honor of the [...]

Saturday... all day without a post, and then I realized that I only have 11 days to get five more mixes up, so here it is #17. Mixed on a flight between Houston and Charlotte. Blogophilia 17 – Mixed in a Cramped Coach Seat Ripped @ 320kbps VBR Songs gathered from blogs – March 1 – April 7, 2010 Download All Tracks in One Zip File Track list: [...]
Polyvinyl Records has been home to some of my favorite bands over the years and probably deserves a lot of credit for me discovering real indie music in high school. What with bands like Aloha , Rainer Maria , American Football , etc. the label was one of the hottest and biggest in the emo/post-emo world. It's hard to believe the label is already 15 years old in 2011 and they continue to put out great albums year after year. To celebrate their 15 years in existence, Polyvinyl has put together an incredible sampler featuring [...]

The Blogophilia repost project continues... We've been busy with a lot of good submissions, and that's a good thing. It's time to take a breather. Today, we move forward with our goal of re-posting past volumes of Blogophilia due to demand. Remember, we're doing this all the way to volume 22, and then phhffttt! We're stopping there. Volumes 23-28 are currently active (zip format only for volumes 23-27), and we're making re-posted volumes available for about a week. Get 'em while you can. Blogophilia 15 [...]
ALOHA! by RAD FRNDS Diarrhea Planet don't suck nearly as much as their name does. Their debut EP ALOHA! was released as a 73 earlier this year on Evil Weevil Records , and is filled with joyful, life-affirming power pop with a lo-fi edge. Most of its songs don't even approach two minutes, nor do they need to. Short and sweet is the formula here, but not too sweet-as the name Diarrhea Planet may suggest, these guys don't mind getting a little dirty. With sloppy guitar work and rousing, shouted vocals, there is a [...]
![[Listen/Watch] – New Song And Video By BRAHMS – "Repeat It"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3227115_lg.jpg)
BRAHMS have been around for well over a year now but have yet to release anything officially, until now that is. Their much-hyped four song EP was fantastic, trawling through the depths of the darkest and dreariest of Electronic Funeral-Pop, but it was always given away for free and was never tangible. Well it looks like it won't be anytime, but they are releasing this new song on an upcoming 73 single (out March 1st) as the B-side with the A-side being the the newer jam I posted of theirs back in January "Add It [...]

Finally, some new music from BRAHMS. Since I discovered them back in March after sifting through the massive amounts of music that the SXSW organisers give away for free each year, it's been almost 10 months since anything new from this NYC three-piece has made it's way onto the interwebs. They have done a bunch of remixes but nothing new by themselves, until now. Premiered over at Stereogum , "Add It Up" is taken from their upcoming debut 73 and we can "expect a full-length this year". Sweet! Check it out [...]

One of the newest venues in the Cincinnati area continues to book some of the best shows this winter. MOTR in Over the Rhine has another good one for us to kick off 2011. Un-officially the first good show of the year. Or at least the first one that I can remember right now. Twin Shadow, who are getting alot of love from sites like Pitchfork and Stereogum will be opening the show on January 15th for Brahms , the band fronted by Aloha drummer and sometimes solo [...]
Three good-looking young men with a huge pedigree of music between them (lead Cale Parks is from Aloha, White Williams and his own solo work, just to mention a bit), a year in active duty that has already seen them open up a tour for Passion Pit and share dates with Telepathe and Lemonade, book huge shows at SXSW and in/around New York, BRAHMS makes 80's nostalgic cinematic pop music that's as affected as it is effective. It's beautiful and sometimes complex, but never not fun and creative in approach. The three sort of came together immediately and have only [...]

I wanted to hear the gnashing of horns. I wanted a gang of sounds to fight it out on a rooftop somewhere, secretly recorded by a curious documentarian who would electronically deliver the recording to my front door. I wanted this conflict to resound into the night, to bounce off the walls of taller buildings, for soundblood to splatter the tar and mortar, for soundhair to be caught under soundfingernails. I wanted beautiful chaos to reset the things that needed resetting. I needed my own mirrors to defog and uncrack and for my body to shrink back to its former [...]

Now this is a house party. Take a band playing their rad new tune (like "Diamond", from Brooklyn's own upstart indie rock outfit Your Youth), dozens and dozens of young hip kids enjoying each other's company and then, er, well, then duct tape bottles of alcohol to their hands making them all but useless save [...]
Brooklyn power trio Your Youth revealed their most excellent new video for the song "Diamond" yesterday on AOL Spinner. As the band's singer/guitarist AJ Wolosenko told Spinner, "the song was pretty much screaming for a 'party video,' but while we love that kind of s- to death, we didn't want ...

One of the few bands to get a record deal based on a demo tape, Aloha is back with a track from their 2010 release, Home Acres. Today's track is also featured for free on the Polyvinyl Sampler, Winston's Essentials which came out last month and features fourteen other great Polyvinyl recording artists. We highly recommend you download the sampler as they really did a solid job with it. On 20102s Home Acres, Aloha expands on the graceful acoustics of their last album, Light Works with an ambient, energetic offering. Overflowing with a sense of [...]
If you were feeling bummed about the end of summer upon us...STOP. Summer just got extended today with the release of Your Youth's debut EP Aloha [Gigantic]. These kids from Brooklyn have crafted the perfect summer jam. In their words, "It's basically about feeling dusted about crushing on someone for a night. The moment the [...]
He is eight days from home and Carl Shapiro, namesake of DC-based Shapiro, can't wait to get into his own bed. The 6-foot-2, lion-maned bassist has been sleeping in a 15-passenger van for the past month, on the road with his bandmates to spread their sound of piano-infused pop-rock with audiences in small clubs and venues all over the United States. Here is a look at the band's journey toward success and recognition.
Sure, using the catchall term of "alternative" might do disservice in some regard to any new artists, but we're going to use it here, especially since the punk-tinged trio called Your Youth (where Brooklyn at?) harness such a summery malaise-like vibe that instantly recalls the college music scene of the late 802s to mid-902s. They've [...]

I'm only now discovering Aloha, who have been around for some time now and who put out a new album called Home Acres in March that was promoted by Men's Health magazine. I usually note where a band is from but Wikipedia makes it sound like the band's members are scattered all over the Eastern Seaboard , like so many Hardee's locations . Polyvinyl is giving away a 6 album package deal by the band, above. Ain't they purdy? Whatever [...]
