This hook up between South London duo Alpines , and the excellent Maya Jane Coles has been out for aaages now (just over a week), but is perfect for your chilled weekend playlist. Alpine - Hands This video directed by Luci Schroder is the very definition of hipster softpron. Surrealistic, gaunt and equal parts offensive, guilty-pleasure + sexy. You’re going to like it, even if you don’t want to, and you won’t be able to look away. This single’s brand new, expecting more from this Aussie outfit on Ivy League Records in the near future. Listen to their previous, excellent release, Zurich EP on their Sndcld. Hat tip, Musiccrushgirl .

I was recently sent this video from an Australian band called ALPINE . I thought it was equal parts hilarious and intriguing- mostly because it plays into that American Apparel wet dream so well. Featuring a group of half nude/pastel colored girls that do slightly suggestive things like wrestle eachother, drink milkshakes in the tub, maul watermelon slices, and my personal favorite- practice kissing on their hands. If there were ever a formula to get the attention of bloggers, this would likely be it. I love the subtlety in not knowing whether they're completely serious [...]

Rain from the Cloud: Thanksgiving Edition Alpine - Hands (single) out now on Ivy League Records Notes: This slinky, sultry dance number comes to us from Melbourne. Self-described as “night-pop”, Alpines are Catherine Pockson and Robert Matthews from South West London. Earlier this year the duo released their debut Night Drive EP , a stylish blend of wraithlike vocals and sharp synth production. The song ‘Cocoon’ followed, more dance orientated with darker shades while screaming classy sophistication. Keen to experiment, Alpines have been remixed by xxxy , Dark Sky and Youth Kills , they have also covered Nirvana with this icy electronic version of 'Something In The Way'. This [...]

Carly Simon isn't one of those artists that you wouldn't necessarily to admit to liking to but Why is an absolute '80s classic. So it's great that someone's decided to remind of that fact. It's just a bit of shame that this cover by Alpines and Maya Janes Coles kind of misses the mark somewhat. No matter though, because it gives us the opportunity to point out this isn't the first time Miss Coles has got her mitts on Alpines beats, as she remixed their track Cocoon under her dubstep alias Nocturnal Sunshine way way back [...]

South London's Alpines are releasing a series of covers - serving up classic pop and rock tracks in their signature dark electro pop style. The latest of these is an ambitious cover of Carly Simon's 'Why' produced by Maya Jane Coles - a perfect deep counter point to the ghostly vocals of Catherine Pockson. Although its a tricky track to cover, the talented combination of Alpines and Coles have managed to make this track their own. The Alpines rework of Nirvana's 'Something In The Way' takes this grungey track into haunting sombre territory. This release is part of an EP [...]

Facebook Alpine (not to be confused with Alpines ) are an indie-pop sextet from Melbourne who are receiving rave reviews and amassing fans by the bucket load in their native country including a recent string of dates with The Jezabels , their latest single 'Hands' is the first release from their forthcoming debut album (due early 2012) and follows last years 'Zurich' EP. . The bands name is apt when it comes to describing their sound, "Hands" is built around icy synth beat rhythms, shimmering guitars, hand claps and smooth, [...]

Alpines , the south London electronic duo are launching a series of collaborative covers and new material to help showcase some of the UK's most promising producers and DJ's. The first of these covers is Carly Simons - 'Why' with the increasingly global Maya Jane Coles . Given that the Alpine sound is quite ethereal and epic in its own right Maya Jane Coles makes an obvious fit for the first in this series, bringing her crisp beats and lush pads to the mix. As covers go this is a pretty special piece of progressive music that feels as [...]

UK's pop-noir duo Alpines have joined forces with DJ/producer Maya Jane Coles for a spooksome cover version of Carly Simon 's 1980 hit "Why" . They managed to turn the sunny reggae-lite original into a strictly nocturnal, bass-heavy trip. Expectedly, it's moody and dark, but still quite danceable. There's no word yet on whether the cover will see an official release soon, but for now, in case you're not yet familiar with the duo's work, [...]
