Tweet Alt J , also known as ∆ (we'll let you figure that one out), are what's known in the trade as a 'Buzz Band'. Quite simply that means tonnes of other blogs and respectable sites have already posted excellent, authoritative and well-researched articles about the band. So, if that's what you're looking for check out the Blue Walrus or the 405 . If you want articles about fictional relationships with guitars , naked bear dancing [...]
Alt-J (who's real band name is actually the unpronounceable "∆" symbol) are a young English four-piece who have recently been getting rave reviews for their sprightly brand of alternative pop music. Mixing folky vocals with poly-rhythmic percussion, and the occasional synth stabs they being a fresh, energetic sound to the indie table, and their debut album, An Awesome Wave , is remarkably strong. It is released on 28th May, but you can stream the whole thing below, with "Tesselate" and "Dissolve Me" being personal favourites.
I have no idea why Alt-J (∆) haven't been featured on here before. I mean, they have a ∆ in their name, their debut album has the word "wave" in it and their sound is as colorful as the disco naïveté logo. This is much pop as it is indie, but more importantly: very enjoyable. The voice and rhythms remind me of Young Magic but with hints of Clock Opera, overall creating a very interesting and appealing sound. An Awesome Wave is out next week, available to pre-order here and streaming in its full [...]
Ever since I first wrapped my ears around their demos last summer, I have had a hard time guarding my excitement about Alt-J ( facebook / twitter ) as we have come closer and closer to the release of their debut An Awesome Wave . The record isn't released until next week, but we've finally got the full album stream for you all to enjoy. In a world made up of singles packaged for download, it is great to see a band engaging with the longer form in the way Alt-J have done [...]
We've had a strange relationship with Jessie J. We liked Do It Like A Dude . It was a bit mainstream-edgy (without ever being alternative) and promised much. Unfortunately since then if we plotted a graph of Mystic Meg turned pop star, with the Y axis labelled 'pleasantly intrigued' down to 'nauseated and annoyed' the graph would have slipped below the bottom to 'vomiting and angry'. But here's a fact (that is if you believe everything you read [...]
This new tune by English newcomers Alt-J (∆) really is "Something Good" - in the true sense of the word. It's a expressive, hauntingly beautiful indie pop tune, with a nice pinch of percussive elements. Love it. Alt-J's debut record An Awesome Wave is coming out next week via Infectious . Make sure to get a copy of it, it's maybe one of the best ones this year so far. mp3 | Something Good
There is no doubt that Alt-J are one of the most special bands to have appeared over the last few years, and now it is only ten days until the release of their debut record entitled An Awesome Wave . To keep the torrent of excitement growing alongside their breathtaking live shows, they have today released another track from the album in Something Good. Whilst Matilda showed their soft side, Fitzpleasure their ability to work with heavy driving bass and thundering drums, and Breezeblocks their understanding of catchy grooves - Something Good has a chorus that is [...]

And so concludes The Great Escape Festival , which always turns into the biggest weekend of our calendar year. It's been four days since the event finished, yet our hangovers have barely receded. On one of the nights we finally reached our bed at 8am! A marathon indeed. Below is our review of a handful of experiences and exploits, but in truth it's pretty impossible to extol the real experience in words. Sure we had an amazing time, with lots of live music and venue hopping, but as a Brighton resident every other week of the year, we noticed [...]
After playing their first ever New York City show last week, Alt-J (@alt_j), also known as ∆ , is poised to take the music world by storm. The band, who recently opened for Wild Beast and We Are Serenades , is readying the release of their debut LP, ∆n ∆wesome W∆ve , which hits shelves later this month exclusively in the UK. Unfortunately for those of us here in the States, the album won't be released until this Fall. In the meantime, you can watch "Matilda", "Fitzpleasure", and the gorgeous new "Breezeblocks" [...]
The Great Escape (Brighton, 10-12 May '12) // Words: Saam Das There are quite literally hundreds of bands playing at this year's The Great Escape , the self-confessed leading new music festival in Europe. With that in mind, we've narrowed down a list of just ten recommended acts to catch across the three days of the festival, as well as throwing in some more general tips seeing as this is the third time we've been down to Brighton. Keep reading, and come [...]

If ever there was a music festival designed for a music blog like ours it would be this one...OK, so perhaps SXSW too, but this one is literally outside our house. Absolutely zero connecting flights to Austin required then, as we only need to step outside of our door and we're surrounded by 300 artists and what seems like the entire British music industry, as we all set out to enjoy the annual Great Escape Festival . As you would expect, this means we are going to be very busy little bloggers over the weekend of the [...]
Live at Leeds ( facebook / twitter ) is set to take over the city on the first weekend of May for its sixth instalment with hundreds of acts playing across some of the city's best venues including The Brudenell Social Club, Nation of Shopkeepers and this year's new addition The Wardrobe. It's one of my favourite day festivals in the UK and, for 2012, has put together a fantastic line-up - from King Charles opening proceedings on Friday at The Cockpit to Male Bonding and Young Magic on closing night. Dog is Dead [...]

Album Stream: Alt-J (∆) – "An Awesome Wave"

Alt-J – Breezeblocks
Self-identified folk-step foursome alt-J have released a video for the track "Breezeblocks" off of the band's upcoming album, An Awesome Wave , out May 28th via Infectious Music . The Leeds-based band has more quirks than its folk-step genre or keyboard shortcut name (which creates a delta sign (∆) when the keys are pushed on a Mac) may suggest. After changing their name twice and finally settling on alt-J to avoid confusion with other bands, members Gwil Sainsbury (guitarist/bassist), Joe Newman (guitarist/vocalist), Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards), and Thom Green (drums) made it quite difficult [...]

Moving Pictures: Woodkid | J. Viewz | Body Language | Trentemøller | MS MR (NSFW) | alt-J (∆) | Bassnectar
Just so you know, for me, nothing gets any better than the video for "Run Boy Run" by Woodkid. Written and directed by the Woodkid himself, Yoann Lemoine, it smells of Maurice Sendak and Imperialism. Holy f*ck balls is it amazing. Enlarge and high def it please. Also, for the required patience it took to make [...]
