Last month , I predicted that April's Best Artists of the Month would include a female. Alas, still no females. We seem to be a pretty sexist bunch over here at Sunset, huh? Joke's on me, the only consistent female writer on the site, I suppose. At any rate, we've come together again to pull our picks for Best Artists of the Month thus far in April. These are the guys we can't stop listening to; the guys who are still singing into our ears as we're falling asleep every night; the guys we [...]
One of the most exciting international acts these days are Alt-J , with the UK-bred grouping getting off to a great start to the 2013 festival season after their highly successful release from last year - An Awesome Wave . One of their nicest pieces is no doubt the single "Breezeblocks", performed this weekend at Coachella and now up to check out - watch above and see more from their set here . The post Video: Alt-J - Breezeblocks Live at Coachella appeared first on [...]
Festival season is a bittersweet time for many. If you're lucky, you'll get to catch at least a couple of the big festivals, but unless you've got money to burn and also no responsibilities, it's inevitable that you'll find yourself in the position—at least once a season—of sitting at your cold, heartless computer watching videos from the shows and wishing you were in the crowd. Watching these videos can be torturous, but at least you can see what you missed and then maybe years down the road when your brain is shriveled and glitchy, you will think back [...]
Who: Palma Violets in the Mojave Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: In your faces.
Memorable Because: Alt-J are a nice indie band, the bespectacled boys down the block who own all the right albums, hang all the right posters and read lots of books, many of which seem to inform their songs. Palma Violets are from the other side of town; hide your daughters. In my perfect world, the first sonic blast from Palma Violets would have happened just as Alt-J's jangle receded, while the Mojave Tent was [...]
Not another Year End List 2012 is officially in the books, and Three Colours has compiled its very favorites of the year. In our opinion, here's the best music of 2012. You may be surprised to see a year-end list released this late into the year, but after all the life-changing events that have occurred over the year, I'm just happy to finally get this out there. 2012 was a crazy great year! Top 13 LPs of 2012 [...]
i love you so, i love you so Ok, fine. I'l give you another remix . Just beware, this one goes to a dark place. Just follow it. There is definitely a strobe light at the end of this tunnel. Best rework of Alt-J I've heard.
Text by Nilina Mason-Campbell. Photos by Rachel Milbauer. As far as I was concerned, British band Alt-J had two strikes against them before performing Monday night at the Roseland—one strike being a particularly flaccid gig that I'd caught in Paris over the summer and the other being a friend's comment that they sounded like Adam Sandler covering Yeasayer, a comparison almost too true it pretty much wrecked the band for me. However, to balance out those two strikes, the songs on their debut album An Awesome Wave could perhaps count as 14 [...]
We know it is so hard to pick and choose who you are going to see when there are so many great artists playing at Coachella--and alas often they are playing at the same time! Here is I Love This Beat's recommendations for Friday's artists that you definitely should check out: Lord Huron , Mojave Tent 1:00 - 1:40 PM ♫ "The Stranger" - Lord Huron ♫ "When Will I See You Again" - Lord Huron The Neighbourhood , Outdoor Theater 1:25 - 2:05 [...]
To put it mildly, 2012 was a big year for Alt-J . The quartet from Cambridge came out of nowhere with a debut record called An Awesome Wave that was initially slow to catch on, but indeed rode that wave to the attention of mainstream press on both sides of the Atlantic and eventually to the UK's Mercury Music Prize. We caught up with the band's Gwil Sainsbury and Gus Unger-Hamilton during SXSW last month at a busy hotel in downtown Austin, and talked to them about their early development in Leeds, the pressure they're already feeling [...]
Alt-J is a Mercury Prize-winning indie-pop band about to head out on a massive tour with stops at damn near every festival in the western world. Paramore is a Fueled by Ramen pop-rock group about to release their first new album after very publicly losing two original members. When the latter stopped by BBC's Radio 1 Live Lounge to promote the new record, they delivered a folk-leaning acoustic rendition of the former's single "Matilda". Now, none of that seems to really add up, but it for reals [...]
Last time Alt-J visited Kansas City, they were simply an opening act at a radio show. They were even missing a member due to illness. But they must have made an impression because when they announced that they'd be back for a headlining gig at the Midland Theater, the April show almost immediately sold out. Now with the full band in attendance, the British indie rockers continued to woo Kansas City with their unique tunes and multi-part harmonies. Tunes like "Breezeblocks," "Fitzpleasure" and more made for a night of memorable music and the guarantee that Alt-J would continue [...]

Nick Cave returns to Seattle with The Bad Seeds... but without the mustache photo by Kyle Johnson What a fantastic time of the year for shows in Seattle! As the weather heats up, so does the frequency of shows it seems. With just about something for everyone this week, we start off on Monday night with yet another great evening with Mudhoney , this time at Easy Street Records. Jamie Lidell, Empress Of, and Ludwig Persik are at Neumos and Talib Kweli and The Physics are performing at [...]
