Altar Eagle - "Parallel Lives" Back in '09, jack-of-all-trades Brad Rose ( The North Sea , Charlatan , Digitalis ) decided to cool it with the skull-crushing noise and start a shoegaze-pop (!) project with wife Eden Hemming called Altar Eagle . We haven't heard much from the pair since their fantastic Mechanical Gardens LP for Type (hard to believe that was almost two years ago ), but today we got a [...]

Listen to the gorgeous first track off Nightrunners , the second full-length by Altar Eagle , the duo comprising Foxy Digitalis / Digitalis Recordings head Brad Rose aka The North Sea and his wife Eden Hemming-Rose. "Carousel Ocean" is a lush, bright, tinkling pop song that slowly reveals layer over layer of crystal-clear chord progressions, carried by Eden's beautiful vocalization and staggeringly finished with an amazing analogue synth solo by Brad. Nightrunners is due sometime in spring 2011 and will be released via Type , which had [...]

Att man vävs in i translikt dagdrömmande. Dessvärre är [...]

Altar Eagle Mechanical Gardens (2010, Type) RIYL = Broadcast, Peaking Lights, A Place To Bury Strangers It's amazing, sometimes, to see the breadth of influence a single band can have on everything that follows in its wake. My Bloody Valentine is undoubtedly among the most ubiquitous when it comes to their musical influence. It seems that any record with hazy, distorted, ethereal guitar noises demands an MBV name check, like the band is collecting royalties from its offspring. Still, others probably account for the perpetual MBV referencing as point of critical laziness. Whatever it [...]

altar eagle - battlegrounds cloud nothings - i apologize major organ and the adding machine - life form (transmission received) royal baths - bad heart

Debut post from our friend Misak - who hosts the Deuss ex Machina show on our radio, Dinamo.fm - features the duo of Digitalis boss Brad Rose aka The North Sea and wife Eden Hemming-Rose. Altar Eagle . He'll be sharing us his vision on leftfield genres whenever he feels fit. Mechanical Gardens out now on Type Records. This excellent debut-proper from hotly tipped duo Altar Eagle finds itself nestled somewhere between the icy drum machine pop of Cold Cave, the Kosmische refractions of Emeralds and the classic layered shoegaze [...]

altar eagle put your dark heart out 2010 (française version) Voilà.

Despite approaching only it's fourth birthday, John Twells' Type Records imprint has covered quite a lot of ground; releasing a relatively broad spectrum of sounds without ever compromising it's 'brand'. Whether it was the sparse piano pieces of Goldmund, the low key jazz-folk of Mountaineer, Liz Harris' reverb heavy melancholy, Richard Skelton's pastoral landscapes or even Twells' own apocalyptic static under his Xela moniker, it all felt like a natural fit. I knew little of Altar Eagle before hearing this release aside from the fact it was on Type, so probably up my street. Even given all [...]

Altar Eagle: Battlegrounds I've always been wary about husband-and-wife musical acts, but Altar Eagle has taken whatever preconceptions I had and tossed them out the window. Composed of drone-folkster Brad Rose and his wife Eden Hemming (who've previously worked as Corsican Paintbrush ), this duo's already drawn comparisons to nearly every shoegaze/dream pop icon of yore (Slowdive, Ride, MBV, Galaxie 500, Mazzy Star). After honing their skills on the limited-run Judo Songs tape, they've returned with analog [...]
September has little value to me beyond the start of football. The weather manages to retain the worst aspects of summer (NYC is 95°F today) as our lifestyles adjust to more focused, goal-driven tasks. Nothing wrong with responsibility, but I'd much prefer to be doing work when it is bitter cold outside. Showing up to [...]

If there had to be a looping soundtrack to my childhood reminiscing dreams, Altar Eagles would fill that void just perfectly. Brad Rose and his wife Eden Hemming-Rose must have taken out the best snippets of My Bloody Valentine and added a tinge of drone in order to create the dream inducing Mechanical Gardens . I love the hint of dark-wave, slightly gothic undertone that they deliver on this album. Lounging around while listening to their album is pretty therapeutic. Recently released on Type Records [...]

Somehow I'd missed the first couple of Altar Eagle releases, so in expecting something in the vein of Brad Rose's usual array of drones or noisescapes, nothing could come as more of a surprise than a sweet blast of synthpop. Rose's previous pairing with his life partner Eden Hemming came in the form of the folk-centric Corsican Paintbrush, miles away from where they've currently landed. Pulsating on a bed of glycerin beats and wrapped in the gauzy pink shimmer of dream pop's best, the project's also not without its dark side; filtering in a few cold-wave shadows to balance out [...]
altar eagle - honey summer camp - round the moon la femme - télégraphe noblesse oblige - beck and call
Altar Eagle are content under layers of gauziness, the duo's music emitting the type of confidence and nostalgic yearning that triggered attention for Beach House, Cold Cave, and other recent breakouts known for their simultaneous recollection of shoegaze and implementation of electronica. Its two members, Eden Hemming and Brad Rose, have been working together throughout [...]

Well it's over, and because it's over I can't let go. 2009, I am reflecting on a year that has yet to end, my first complete year in the Bay Area. In truth, 2009 probably won't start to be cataloged by me until about 2017, which is such a futuristic thought I can hardly stand it. We're here to talk music however, so let's start and end with a standard top ten rundown: 1. Fever Ray – Fever Ray ( Rabid ) 2. Dolphins into the Future - …On Seafaring Island [...]
