I'll readily admit that I was in a bad mood when I put this one together. It's probably pretty obvious with the selections. The theme was basically a soundtrack to a party at Eeyore 's. I like it a lot though, probably mostly due to me pulling out some of my favorite late 90s indie rock jams. I dare you to not like it, but then again, I won't really give a smurf if you don't. He could take it a la Ray Charles or a la Big Maybelle, but no matter how he took it he liked it ratty. - Mac Rebennack/Dr. John on Alvin 'Shine' Robinson in Under A Hoodoo Moon "Ratty", by the way, was a New Orleans equivalent of the term "funky" back in the day. And I never thought of Shine having a Big Maybelle influence - but it does make some sense. [...]

This is the first of a two-part post featuring Alvin 'Shine' Robinson. He's been my subject two times before here ( 2005 and 2007 ); and I've wanted to do something else on him for way too long. What got me back into it was a tidbit of a scoop I got from Willie West during a recent interview I did with him that should appear on the sleeve of his second 45 for Timmion Records out of Finland. He [...]
Before I even did a mix dedicated to delta blues , I was determined to do a mix of vintage soul. At the time I was obsessed with the Numero Group 's Eccentric Soul series (I still am), and it the first pass I took at doing a soul mix was too single-sourced to merit posting. My knowledge of soul is ever expanding from a number of sources - hip-hop samples , Mississippi Records' tape series , and good old self-motivated research - so it was just a matter of time [...]

a reissue of an early Tamla record You know I love soul. I love Motown's soul pop sound. I love Stax's hard driving soul and soul-funk. I'm into Dusty's blue-eyed soul and some of that Northern Soul sound. But sometimes I want that other stuff, that down and dirty rhythm and blues, with sauntering bass lines and tight-but-rough horn lines. With swinging drums and voices that tell you they know a little something about the world. That music that makes you feel like [...]
Brooklyn Phono presses all of my favorite records. From Norton to Crypt to Sundazed , the holy trifecta of re-issue labels. And it all takes place 2 blocks from my house! They use a Southen Machine & Tool Company record press (left). A stamper for Side One is placed in the top chamber of the press, while the stamper for Side Two is attached directly below. A donut of molten vinyl is sandwiched between the two labels and set into position by an automated mechanism. [...]
Alvin Robinson -- Down Home Girl Great things about this song (credits in order of appearance): the horns the choice of acoustic bass the bassline (this needs sampling, if it hasn't been already) the interplay of trumpet and bass Lord I swear, the perfume you wear / Is made out of turnip greens / Every time I kiss you, girl / It tastes like pork & beans the [...]
