That's right, guys, Nu Rave Brain Wave is four years old today. To celebrate, I used really poor grammar and absolutely zero effort on a beautiful photograph of me from this year - exactly how I like to be seen, in cashmere and David Yurman about to grab a pug. So thank you all for reading, commenting (if you ever have, and if you haven't a few "fuck yeahs" every now and then isn't so hard, now is it?), tweeting, facebooking or interacting in any way with me, or enjoying anything I've posted. Shout out to all the bands and [...]

Monster Rally is the brainchild of 23 year old Columbus, Ohio resident and Cleveland native Ted Feighan. Producing sample - based tropical pop , his releases on Gold Robot weave old records into a wholly different beast. We asked him to close out our summer with some autumn-eschewing vibes, and he presented us with a mix that is purely indicative of his sound. Substitute Teachers: Monster Rally [...]
I've been pulling heavily from several Now-Again Records releases from past year on the radio show. I mentioned Witch's Introduction, here, but this related Zambian monster of LP, Amanaz's Africa, has been getting just as much play. Speaking of Now-Again, they just released an Indonesian psychedelic-funk anthology that I'll most definitely be endorsing on here [...]

Sunday already? High time for Wild Weekend #47. In which we discover the amazing Uke Of Phillips, hear Dagmar Krause swoon beneath an Acnalbasac Noom , while Phil Ochs pays homage to a legend of the silver screen. Have a wild one. You´d probably expect different by looking at the song´s title only, but closer listening reveals that Ada Richards doesn´t need no drink nor toke at all. No sir, Ada´s drunk and real high in the spirit of the Lord... The result? A wild wild gospel soul song. [...]

Stones Throw affiliate Egon started a label a while back called Now-Again records and has been putting out a consistent string of releases that we have overlooked for sometime. They recently started licensing albums from Zambia's 70s "Zamrock" scene in conjunction with Zamrock pioneer Rikki Ililonga. Starting with the seminal bands Witch and Amanaz, Now-Again has begun the process of bringing to new light a collection of albums that were heavily influential to many US and British rock bands. Anyways the story of Zamrock is really interesting and you should read more about it here [...]

You know, I'm not exactly naive when it comes to the internet. I've done perfectly innocent Google image searches at work and then hurriedly had to cover up or stove in my monitor as all manner of filth made its appearance, irrespective of the tame nature of the search terms. So I was up quite late recording this podcast and because only pervs and loonies seem to be up late* using the internet I reckoned that this should be called the Pervcast. Particularly as I recorded most of it with a glass of wine in one hand and [...]

[mp3] Amanaz: "Khala My Friend" Our love of most everything having to do with good African music on this site, is fairly clear. This morning, we wanted to share this newly available treat with you: the 1975 classic Africa from Zambian psych-rock band Amanaz . Originally posted by the oft-trustworthy GVB this long out of print record recently saw limited repressing on vinyl (sold out), but is now available to everyone thanks to Now Again and Stones Throw . This record is a slow burner getting better [...]
Now Again Records just announced that they got the licensing rights to Amanaz's wonderful record, Africa. I don't have the entire record, but I've listened to the entire thing online and it's pretty fantastic. According to Stones Throw, the album features "fuzz guitars, stoned chants and funky drums." The band is from Zambia and the [...]
I posted about Amanaz's way sold-out 1975 LP Africa a while back, and it remains one of my favorite musical discoveries of the last few years, so it's worth noting that the record is now available for purchase in the Stones Throw/Now Again web store. Fuzzed-out Zambian stoner-psych ("Zamrock") from the early '70s, with a dude that sounds like Dikembe Motumbo on lead vocals: mp3: Amanaz :: Khala... click through for more...

The question is not how well you know your blogger, but how well your blogger knows you... ... because I know what you're thinking today. Actually, I always know what you're thinking but I don't talk about it that much because I don't wanna creep you out... but I do know... and what you're thinking right now is, "Gee, Tone, your blog is the best thing on the entire internet and all, but you're really lacking in posting Zambian Psyche Rock. It's kinda disappointing. Also, I've heard you [...]

Die Prise Afro-Beat, die Vampire Weekend oder Yeasayer ihren Songs beigeben, genügt dem aufgeschlossenen Musikfreund längst nicht mehr. Authentischeres Material muss her.

Today, on another shit-cold day in New Jersey, we've got a couple new videos and songs for you guys. First, The Kills , who I've posted here numerous times after witnessing their great act at Lollapalooza last year, have released a video for their single "Black Baloon" off of their 2008 album Midnight Boom . Is it odd that they're wearing the same clothes in the video that I saw them perform in back in August? The Kills - Black Balloon [...]

It seems like the indie community suddenly discovered that Africa has a rich musical past (and present) thus proliferating the love for African artists high and low. However there have for years existed great comps of African psych from David Byrne's Love's A Real Thing compilation to the constant stream of Sublime Frequencies discs. Though in all fairness this year has seen two of my newer favorites from the region. African Scream Contest: Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds From Benin & Togo [...]

Amanaz: History Of Man and Sunday Morning From: Africa [1975] Chrissy Zebby Tembo & Nagozi Family: Fisherman and Trouble Maker From: My Ancestors [1974] You know, I like to think we have a good relationship, we've been discussing music now for near on four years, I've played you my pick of my collection, you've listened politely. Therefore, in the interests of honesty, I'm not going to claim that I [...]

Sublime Frequencies and Shadoks - two labels with a similar aim, to release the finest in obscure world music. I've dabbled in Sublime Frequencies offering of Thai Pop music previously . But now I have become spellbound by the sounds of Africa. Amanaz - Africa ( alt link ) Mid-1970's Zambian fuzzed out psych-rock. This song taken [...]
My weekend listening consisted mainly of songs from this new super-limited reissue of early '70s Zambian hard-psych from Amanaz , a band described in the press materials as " an African version of early Cream ." If you like your obscure, fuzzed-out stoner jams to transport you to another time and place, this is absolutely that. The whole thing gets better with each listen, plus a couple of these songs (not this one, though) sound like they've got an extremely high Dikembe Mutombo on vocals, which is just an added bonus. [...]
