Elainelayabout captured performances at Planetarium's closing event. Global Inheritance brought a little environmental art to Hollywood and Highland. The organic wine and snap peas were tasty. The Amy Winehouse themed golf cart that runs on ethanol was cool. We saw the stars once more inside the handmade office paper and rice glue observatory and enjoyed [...]

It's the buzz of the blogs: brand spankin' new Federal Trade Commission guidelines for bloggers now require full disclosure of any personal benefit received gratis . With bloggers on both sides of the fence, it's not yet clear whether that would include those gifts garnered purely as part of the review process, such as passes to shows, and promotional and review materials both digital and tangible of any value whatsoever. Like many culture vultures and blogwatchers, though I recognize the need to create some sort of oversight which would [...]
Even in a jumpsuit with enough pockets for the apocalypse, no one is fully equipped for this weekend. People will lose flutes in teepees and see alligators in guitar-neck shadows chomping on the heads of musicians; and emerge from Pioneertown alleys on Sunday morning without pants.

Finding the teepee involved receiving intentionally vague directions from two groups of kids, navigating a sudden neighborhood with way too many lawn ornaments, and sneaking into someone's backyard via a labyrinthine system of wooden gates I opened by tugging on bits of fishing wire tied into little loops. Inside the teepee we found Matt as well as Ed Sharpe ("Has anyone seen my metal flute?!! Who took my magical flute?!") and a pack of orgasmic chickies in face paint.

Leslie and the Badgers play in a style more retro than vintage country but nevertheless unique. With their multi-talented instrumentalist stage show, like a gypsy caravan picking up musicians and fans along the way (at least more since I had last seen the group), the band plays its well crafted melodic lines in particular with sweeping violin, slide pedal steel guitar and lyrics such as "When you say I miss you day and night / with love brighter than the ballpark lights / I'm a boat lost at sea siding on the shore / say you miss me once more" [...]
Cobra Lillies are a free-for-all freak folk band made up of several Eastside bands. The band began as a side project for The Monolators, and every time I see them they have new members and routines, which have included stomp dancing, cheerleaders, and tonight a flamboyant fashion show sketch to open the show. There were bicycle bells ringing throughout the night and all sorts of weird, down-homey folksy instruments.
One's favorite Beatle says a lot about a person. John fans are intellectuals, Paul represents the beautiful people, Ringo lovers go with the flow, and those who favor George lean toward the mystic and spiritual. An ardent Beatles buff and devout Hari fan, I have found these Beatle-based characterizations to be remarkably accurate, and the audience and performers at the Tribute to George Harrison at Spaceland Sept. 12 proved no exceptions.

Country-clad strangers huddled around the bar and red-lit couches, holding beers and cookies rather than guns. The DJ played Hank Williams between bands until they ran out of his material, then Loretta Lynn took over. Chilling on the tiered seating beneath The Cowboy Show's intimate vibe, the audience sat rapt, almost hypnotized, every time a band took stage.
L.A. RECORD likes fresh and spicy meat. We couldn't wait for Amanda Jo Williams to wipe the dust gathered on her Jumbo Western in the long cross-country trek. Her quirky country style lets her be as comfortable strumming songs about sex as she (and her twins) are rhyming about poop. This interview by Daiana Feuer.
